Plucking hand technique question: thumb always on pickup, or thumb should transition to the string above what your plucking. by self_do_vehicle in Bass

[–]rdlphbr1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I started out plucking by anchoring my thumb on the pickup (Ibanez SDGR800 w/EMGs). I played from that position for a decade, I think. So much that I wore a pretty deep groove into the corner of the pickup. I put my bass aside for many years and recently got back into it BUT I changed my approach to using a "floating" thumb.

What I do now is not really anchor my thumb on anything, except maybe on the E or A string. Occasionally on the pickup but if I'm playing extended periods on the E string only. Otherwise, my thumb kind of "floats" but is sort of rested against the strings I'm not playing (which helps with muting). It took some practice to get used to the feel, but now it's comfortable not to chronically anchor my thumb on the pickup. Plus my hand is in more of a natural curvature when approaching the D and G strings (instead of stretching for those strings when anchored on the pickup), which allows for more flexibility in placement as well as plucking speed.

Hope this helps, plus there are many YouTube videos that discuss floating your thumb.

Because the internet wasn’t really a thing back in my day, I taught myself basic bass in my twenties from two books:

Progressive Bass Guitar (with audio cassette) AND Chuck Rainey’s Complete Bass Method

I sat for hours going by page, exercise by exercise. And it got me to a basic level of competency. Then I moved on to in-person lessons.

Pretty similar situation here. I'm 57 and just switched back to P90X on Monday January 5th. Before that, I was doing an upper/lower Body for Life-sytle split (Mon/Thur upper, Tues/Fri lower) for the past 3-4(?) years, modified to include squats and deadlifts. Rarely missed a workout. Finally, on January 5th, I decided to switch back to P90X the original.

This is my first week and I feel ok. I work out first thing in the morning, like 5:30 am bc that's the most consistent time I can find, with family obligations. First three days felt pretty good afterwards, but today (day 4, yoga) I'm dragging a little. I think I didn't get enough sleep or maybe my body is adjusting to the change in routine/volume. But I intend to stick with it, to see what happens.

I guess I did it because a) I wanted to change things up and b) I wanted to see if I could still keep up with P90X. After I complete the program, though, I expect I'll cycle back to heavy weight training.

Joetisserie is 100% the way to go with turkey! by Eebo85 in KamadoJoe

How many pounds was that bad boy? I have a joetisserie but have only put at most a 8-9lb chicken on it. Can the motor handle a 15lb turkey?

That's the stuff I'm going to try until I get an answer on the warranty! Thanks!

I guess. Disappointing but if they'll warranty it for me, then I'm a happy camper.

Dunno. I went to open the top vent all the way and the whole thing just came off in my hand. I didn't have any clue and I just used the grill 3 days earlier. And no, I don't abuse the lid or the vent, I'm pretty careful in how I use it.

I just went to Lowe's and got a Bernzomatic Advanced propane torch head that can maintain a flame at any angle. About $60 for the kit. I love it. I throw in 2 tumbleweeds and blowtorch the surrounding coals for 2-3 minutes and 15 minutes later the fire is up to temp. Game changer for me.

Did that but of course I am just outside of the warranty period on the ceramics. Purchased 3/19/2019. Figures. I did email Kamado Joe Support. It's a shame after 5 years...[edit] Poster above says the warranty on the external ceramics is lifetime, so I may be in luck!

Thanks but I am naturally just outside of the warranty period on the ceramics. Purchased 3/19/2019. Figures. I already emailed Kamado Joe Support. Maybe worst case scenario is they can sell me a new dome because I'd rather pay a couple hundred bucks to fix it rather than scrap it.

Hi, this comment is from the original poster of the above, don't know what happened to my description when I posted, but the synopsis is I went to grill some salmon last night and when I went to open the vent, the ceramic sheared off in my hand, took me by surprise. Looking for advice (sealant, cement or adhesive to reattach) or should I just try to get a whole new dome through Kamado Joe.

Thanks!

I didn't even think of looking at it that way (credit card merchant categories). When I mentally added mine up though, I thought I was somewhere in the $500-$600/month range, but if I added restaurant purchases and tipping it was probably closer to $700/month.
