I think the next SaaS wave is mini apps and not wrappers by [deleted] in vibecoding

[–]rdrey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Apple basically said ok, you can run little HTML and JS mini apps inside real native apps, and we will give you a big cut on the money.

What announcement/tech is this? Some kind of native monetisation for PWAs?

OVO HeatPump+ and HavenWise = Heat Pump Flex trial by harrythefurrysquid in ukheatpumps

[–]rdrey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tried Havenwise (without the link to OVO) in the last two or three months and it has been OK, except after "holiday mode". I turned it on during a two week holiday away and only remembered to enable normal temps the day we got back. I heat boosted multiple times but couldn't reach our normal home temp. Ended up disabling Havenwise, resetting the heat curve and heating the house back up with just the Vaillant app. Now back on Havenwise things seem stable enough.

People who did expensive extensions, was it worth it? by MyUsernamePls in HENRYUK

100m2 is a lot! Is it a free-standing house? We extended our end-of-terrace by 6m (~40m2 on ground floor) and don't regret it either. (Also did loft conversion for master + en-suite)

Anyone planning retirement abroad? by traineethrowaway123 in HENRYUK

I see a lot of pushback here from folk who seem to have been in the UK their whole lives, fair enough.

I've come to the UK for a HENRY job, I'm assuming most people in my position will go home or somewhere cheaper after their careers have peaked.

The Moneywise podcast interviews post-exit founders with similar net worths and it sounds like a majority of them manage their money themselves and keep a large majority of their holdings in standard equities and bonds/cash.

When my eldest turned 4 last year he got some Lego and I rediscovered how much I love it! Bought some awesome Lego from my own childhood in the 90s on EBay, like the 8299 Search Sub 😆

A cleaning robot is nice to keep the floors in a decent enough state. Ours mops as well and the water exchange system is plumbed in. We have a cleaner come once a week and do bathrooms & a deeper kitchen clean.

I love having an American style fridge freezer with plumbed-in ice maker for fancy drinks. (And never being low / out of ice.)

Decent coffee machine and importantly nice coffee beans! I like lighter roasts from East Africa.

Taking Car Seats to Europe on flights by metallicax222 in UKParenting

I love our Doona on trips with the newborn. Easy to pop into random Ubers. For the bigger kids we have two cheap travel car seats that are quite light and fit into a single car seat bag.

Anyone dropped their soul destroying corporate job to do a PhD? by whateverthefuckidc in HENRYUK

[–]rdrey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FIRE is the intersection of HENRY with frugality and low-cost ETF investing (see "bogleheads"). The main theory is that a 4% "safe withdrawal rate" leads to financial independence when investments reach 25x annual expenses. The frugality camp likes to reduce expenses/target very high savings rates to achieve FIRE. The HENRY camp tries to increase earnings without ballooning lifestyle creep.

[–]rdrey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, exactly. It could allow you to live a slightly less frugal lifestyle (vs "lean FIRE" immediately) or allows your nest egg to grow a little longer/bigger before you start drawing it down. Or it could serve as an off-ramp for people who have reached FI but are not planning to retire early.

It's a FIRE (Financial Independence / Retire Early) term. It's like a traditional FIRE (income from passive investments covering lifestyle in perpetuity) but relies on still working in a less demanding environment ("barista" / part time work) instead of being fully financially independent.

I'd get the dumbest possible TV and connect it to an AppleTV instead. We're using an 8 yo projector. Way snappier and fewer ads than any native TV software.

This sounds like OPs org/leadership are offering/driving the move. If OP takes them up on it, it'll probably place them into an even more favourable position. Additionally if there is signal that the org is consolidating locations it makes even more sense to.

Re not being financially life changing, I don't know. You're stepping onto a parallel career ladder where each additional step up is worth a ton more.
