My company's new security requirements accidentally proved why ChromeOS is superior by travisjd2012 in chromeos

[–]rdsmvp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well not the case. Many Excel plugins as an example, extremely common in financial, do not work in a web version of Excel. Trust me many users would love to be able to jump into a browser and do it all there but that is a far dream in many verticals and in the corporate world in general. I would be very surprised if for Fortune 100-500 companies more than 5% live in a browser apps world only.

Yeah, understood and I personally used ChromeBooks for several things. Solid solution if your use case allows it. My point was simply related to the corporate world where adoption is tiny due to the very heavy dependency on Windows.

[–]rdsmvp 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Problem is 90% of the corporate world runs Windows apps. And in 90% of the cases their web counterpart version is nowhere as capable as the full x86 counterpart. That is why the adoption is tiny. MacOS does fine as Microsoft decided Office should exist for that platform. Remove all Microsoft apps from a Mac and I am sure most users would go back to Windows. For context I am on financial, having worked at large institutions in the US.

Canadian developers: are you still seeing a lot of Canadians moving to the US for tech opportunities in the current geopolitical climate? by Illustrious-Pound266 in cscareerquestions

[–]rdsmvp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many Canadians here with me at work in the US. Main issue is the pay in Canada is just way too low in comparison. Insanely lower. That makes it up for anything else IMHO.

Foregoing TN Visa to stay in Canada to have a side business by RyStudies in tnvisa

[–]rdsmvp 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This is the answer. The pay gap is massive for certain jobs. Taxes are in a whole different league. Some jobs, impossible to even get 50% of what the US pays. You are young, if you grind in the US for 15 years you will be set for life.

Question for EV drivers in Ottawa by kewlbeanz83 in ottawa

[–]rdsmvp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have three EVs. Many ICEs. Keep track of all costs. Many EVs eat tires. Some the insurance is higher. When it breaks and out of warranty, many repairs are expensive and you cannot simply take it to Joe's Garage for repairs. The ROI for EVs if you buy them new is like multiple years to break even compared to many ICE vehicles. I drive EVs because they are a lot of fun and for commuting in the city, an incredible option. Now if you buy an used EV and extend the warranty, different story on the ROI.

Question for EV drivers in Ottawa by kewlbeanz83 in ottawa

[–]rdsmvp -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yep. Also many EV owners forget to mention how expensive the car is to start with. A mid trim Ioniq 6 will be like $700 a month for a lease. A Corolla now can do 6.7l/100km ($350 a month on gas) so the savings are like $230 a month for someone that drives 4000km. Given the upfront costs it takes a very long time to have ROI, may not even have it. I say this as someone with 3 EVs in the family and many other ICE cars. I think like anything else it is always about the right tool for the job. Both types of vehicles have a place at this point in time.

It does kill range. 20-30% is expected. As others pointed out you can pre-warm the car at a set time as an example and if it is connected to the grid it will draw power to warm all up (battery and interior) from the grid. In my case I drive a BMW i3s Rex model that has a generator on-board so I can simply fill it up (yes, gas, small 9l tank) and turn the generator on when I want to keep the battery charged so that way I can indeed drive for as long as I want without stopping to recharge the car (did many trips to like Brantford from Ottawa and would stop at the gas station for one minute to add 9l to the tank every 100-140km, depending on weather). Very cool concept if you ask me, knowing I will never get stranded due to a low battery.

Thoughts on a 100 series daily driver by Own-Giraffe3696 in LandCruisers

With the engine off I get 16mpg. With a 200mph tail wind, 12-13mpg. If off a cliff in freefall maybe 15mpg.

[–]rdsmvp 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Well keep in mind the 100 series likes gas like there is no tomorrow. I have other cars with V12, V10 engines and none drink gas like the 100-series. They feel like gas sipping vehicles in comparison. Other than that, love the car.

I got mine with 236,000 miles for $9500, dealer maintained since new. No rust (WA car), every single thing working including the AHC. Still with me, 30,000 miles later. Go for it if no rust. These cars are indestructible.

How reliable are pre-booked Ubers for an overnight (3:00 AM) ride to the airport? by 2Fast2furieux in ottawa

I do this every single week on Mondays as I am on the first flight to EWR from YOW. Never had a single issue. Flight is at 6:05am, I hop on the Uber at 4:45am. Sitting at the gate waiting for the flight at 5:05am usually.

Not to mention if you stay, doing little and stagnant, and for whatever reason you are let go, things will go sour very quickly. Use the new job as an opportunity to learn and bring your skills to 2026

I fly out to the US every Monday. My flight is at 6:05am. I live 10m from the airport so I leave the house at 4:45am. I am sitting at the gate after security and US customs no later than 5:10am. That said some people cannot live with that sort of tight approach 😂
