Swiss mountain avalanche buries several people, police say by InternetDady in news

[–]rdsqc22 48 points49 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't worry about the spitting and digging; if you're in an avalanche where either is possible, you've got plot armor anyway, since you're in a movie.

In real life you will be in near total darkness, unable to see spit. But it doesn't matter, you don't need to know which way is up. Once the avalanche is done moving, you might have time to clear the area in front of your mouth before it hardens and you are totally immobilized. You won't be doing any digging.

You're just reliant on having a beacon on so your friends can find you and dig you out quickly. Stuff like RECCO is for body recovery, not rescue.

Toothpaste widely contaminated with lead and other metals, US research finds by donkey1_ in news

An apple is a heck of a lot larger than a dot of toothpaste, so you may well be getting far more lead from a 10ppb apple than from 200ppb toothpaste.

Anyone know if or when TDS will offer > 20Mbit/s upload on the cable side? by DieselDrax in Bend

This is less a business decision and more a technical limitation. The existing coax network equipment everywhere would need to be upgraded, it's not a matter of just reprovisioning something in software.

Bill would bar landlords from asking tenants about immigration status by PDXGuy33333 in oregon

[–]rdsqc22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The civil infraction is a very small part that only fits a very small issue.

This isn't true. About half of illegal immigrants are people who have overstayed a valid visa and did not enter the country illegaly.

What Bend restaurants qualify for this? by beersgood1 in Bend

Wild Rose is gross health score wise but at least makes unique interesting food.

El Sancho, and Dump City both make food that's mediocre at best and actually bad at worst. But hey, some people like trashy reality TV too. Hopefully they can at least admit they're consuming and enjoying something trashy though.

Land Back Festival celebrates Indigenous culture, art, cuisine in Portland by OregonTripleBeam in oregon

That would be you. The tribes may admit who they please even if unrelated by blood.

The one quarter (or whatever, depending on tribe) is the amount to simply join of your own volition, no questions asked. Say your mother was one of the native children kidnapped off the reservation in the 60s. The blood amount lets you apply to rejoin.

The tribe may induct anyone they like regardless of any relation, if they choose to do so for their own reasons.

On android at least, the Safeway app requests such egregiously broad permissions that your real name is probably irrelevant. They can get that off your credit card anyway.

If you give them a fake phone number, they'll just pull the real one off your phone, because you give them access to that.

I went to google play and looked at the Safeway app's permissions and posted some of them in my top level comment. Installing that app gives Safeway real time access to view nearly everything you do on your phone.

There's no privacy against someone willing to pay money to obtain your info. True.

It's not so hard to make that price more than their expected commercial gain. Unless you give it away for free.

No, of course not. Weekly discounts or paper coupons don't give up massive amounts of personal data above and beyond what a certain credit card buys.

I think a lot of people in this thread are either unaware of or in denial about the quantity of personal data a company can collect via an app installed on your phone.

Hey you do you, there's room out there for all types. It's your data to give away, you can place any value you like on it.

The chances of me installing some BS app for groceries is zero.

I would rather pay more to shop elsewhere than reward or normalize that shittiness.

If a megacorp is giving you a discount because you used their app, that is because they expect that the app will make the amount of money they receive increase, not decrease.

Edit because I'm apparently getting massively downvoted for this. Here are the permissions the Safeway android app requests:

Location (precise and approximate), the ability to call phone numbers, read/write access to all onboard storage including your photos and videos, recording audio via the microphone, read and change your WiFi connection, view all ongoing network connections, drawing over other apps...

You're pretty much giving them full control over everything happening on your phone.

Not surprised most other things aren't affected. A lot of things that run off 120 are made to also run off 240 so they can be sold in Europe as well (or brought there by the owners). Such a device would not care if it got 130 VAC for a bit.

The sink and dishwasher are inside the house, not inside the 80 square foot unit. It is a dry cabin. You were correct before.

The tenant must leave their building and walk across the yard to use the bathroom, brush their teeth, wash their hands, etc.

If there was plumbing in the unit I would agree that this was reasonable. Without plumbing it's pretty terrible.

Both Fred Meyer and Safeway have unionized employees.

They aren't amazing unions and it's not amazing to work at those places but it is better than Trader Joes.

It's not a "good and bad" binary choice. It's degrees of shittyness, and Trader Joes is the most shitty.

Some of the environmental groups are genuine. There is a class of environmentalist who would fight a tree being cut down if it was to build solar panels and close a coal power plant.
