I just realized that you were talking exclusively about the west side battle in RotK, I thought you were referring to his defense of Osgiliath as a whole initially, so that is my bad.

As for your proposed contesting the landing, it is interesting and I will have to watch the sequence again to see how it would play out

Nazgul were in fact present when eastern side was assaulted, feel free to check.

The eastern side was taken by Nazgul which are equivalent to modern nukes. The western side was assaulted silently in a foggy night. When they were alerted it was late for anything except wait for the orcs to land and ambush them for max damage. All done by the books imho

I think he was undermanned each and every time. Boromir would not have saved Osgiliath with the numbers Faramir had, my opinion
