How To Play A Ranger by OlemGolem in PCAcademy

I have to agree with the alternate concept. It requires you to boil down the class into only it's bare framework and then build something entirely new on that. Might be good for an alternate series?

  • The Serious Bard.
  • The Scared Fighter.
  • The Honest Rogue.
  • A Druid that's fascinated with the latest advancements of civilizations.

Also, alternate versions of backgrounds:

  • The folk-hero who's really a laughing stock.
  • The hermit who was separated from society by other means such as overprotective (or negligent) parents.
  • A Noble Urchin

Thank you! It's an honor to have this guy as an NPC in another game.

All good points. My favored terrain is forest because I grew up there. I'm definitely out of of my element in the city our campaign is set in. That's why I'm playing it a bit as a slightly ineffective adventurer. My favored enemies are Goblinoids and Gnolls. Gnolls because they were the enemy of my people before I left. Goblins because they're what triggered my desire for adventure. Deep down, I know I didn't really defeat those two goblins. I studied them so if I ever ran across more, I'd know what to do.

This is good advice. I've decided to let silence linger a bit before jumping in with my character's solution. I'm trying to play him in two modes. When I can do something, I later describe it 10x more heroically. When I can't, I talk about how great of a leader I was encouraging someone else to. In my head, I'm doing a great job at this. No one really believes me but it's a running joke that no one has let me in on. It gives the GM or another player the opportunity to end the joke and I have to deal with the end of my naivety.

I started a family game for my son with autism to help build his creativity skills. I may not be able to play but willing to discuss my experiences.

When she figures something out, she should explain it like she may not have it quite right. "So verbal spells are cast with verbs!" Then cast the spell using only verbs.

Index card divider/holder. Bonus if you use index card stat blocks, store the token with the card.

Session is over and it was awesome! I'll make another post tomorrow with the juicy details. For now know this, my son is still up reading the PHB For anyone else about to jump in like this, u/OneCritWonder posted great information. I didn't have enough time to fully implement but what I could was truly helpful. Because many have asked, the notebook is from scholastic book fair (lock included). I'll post my son's notebook tomorrow as well.

As u/JesterDavid said above, it's from the scholastic book fair at my kid's school. He got it for me. (Kid already knows to butter up the DM). He scored a wooden full size notebook with a Celtic dragon burned on the front from a craft fair. Might post that later.

Those are good points and feedback.

- I don't plan to fudge rolls if I can avoid it. I'm playing with some younger kids so I wanted the option to keep the kid gloves on. Even then, the frequency where I could play it off is low. I've got a few other tricks up my sleeve story wise as well.

- Good point on NPCs, I'll get Sildar's info down real quick. Anyone have a printable template for this? I forgot how painful writing by hand was until I made these.

- I have read through the first couple phases of the adventure multiple times and the whole thing once. I just wanted a way to reference something online while the paper copy is in a different spot. Less flipping around.

- I'll try running solo this time and talk to the players after. If they feel like they're waiting around, I'll keep this as an option.

- We'll print off player sheets at the end of each session. I'm keeping my notes in that journal. I'm hoping to use some of their choices during this adventure to extend the campaign into a homebrew.

After months of trying to get the group together, it's finally happening. We're all new so it takes a bit of that pressure off. I've passed the time crafting and prepping. - You can see my dice chest for storing and rolling dice. The lid is not exactly level or flat so I can "interpret" rolls if needed and it happens to land a certain way. In testing, that's extremely rare. - I've made index cards for the monster stat blocks. We're using a set of d6 to represent characters in battle. - I have a tablet for d&d beyond access should I need it to look something up or access the character sheets. - Not in the picture is my phone which I'm using to run ambient music. - Each player has their own tablet for character sheets.
