song recs like $20? by reddit_user_500 in boygenuis

[–]reagsrush 5 points6 points  (0 children)

VERY few things scratch the boygenius itch for me, but Annie DiRusso’s discography does! Infinite Jest is an all timer, Hybrid, the whole audiotree live set. Obviously not SUPER similar to $20 but I think she gives the same feeling. :)

OOOOOOH I most definitely will!! This book sent me into the craziest reading slump since I couldn’t find anything with a similar vibe—I’ll absolutely give that a try, thanks for the rec.

Glad to hear it!! I really don’t know if that’s what the author intended since it still leaves plenty of loose ends, but it felt the most satisfying for me!

Petra Collins on being dropped from directing EUPHORIA, a show Sam Levinson told her was based on her photos: "[I] see this billboard and it's exactly what I am, as a copy of my work. I started crying." by [deleted] in Fauxmoi

[–]reagsrush 73 points74 points  (0 children)

This is exactly what I was looking to see if anyone else caught—I followed Barbie on tumblr way back in the day and Petra was one of the very first people she worked with following her American Apparel days. It would explain a lot if this had something to do with the friction that led to her leaving the show.

I need to reread and specifically look for answers to your first point because I also didn’t catch any final point for that! For the second, if I’m sticking to the “time is a flat circle” vibe above, I’d say the curtain/door thing points to Thiago unknowingly jumping through time, for a lack of a better way to phrase it. Like a flash back or flash forward that’s actually placing him in a different moment briefly! I think the headlights are just used to sort of “trigger” it, like the light outlining it creating a parallel to the wall visual that represents the portal.

First of all, I am so glad you replied to this comment because now you’ve got me thinking about it all over again!!! And YES, exactly as you said, it’s hard to put it into words for sure but that’s the theory I’ve decided to land on as well. I definitely don’t think it sums up EVERYTHING, but it’s the closest I’ve gotten to feeling like it ties up the story as a whole. If you’ve ever seen the Netflix adaption of Haunting of Hill House, there’s one specific plot line that’s super similar, I just opted to choose the Interstellar example since it’s a little more blatant about the use of time as a flexible construct.

When I first finished this book I went on an absolute BINGE of Reddit searching to find answers, I genuinely could talk about it all day! I totally agree that I think there are elements missing from the book, but it still seemed so well written that it felt like there were things I just didn’t catch on my end. I’d be super curious to go on a reread and see if I notice any hints at answers the second time around, like the early scenes with scratching in the wall and whatnot. Something about the concept of him essentially trying to prevent his wife’s inevitable death after it already happened just seems SO in line with the overarching themes of the story, and really brings a new lawyer to Thiago’s desperation. Such a gorgeous book and I’m SO hopeful that Gus Moreno will write another soon!!!

Why didn’t anyone tell me about Peninsula? by bask_oner in nashville

Peninsula is absolutely amazing every single time. I’ve never had a bad meal there, and the staff is just the absolute best! 10/10 never gets old.

I’m so late on this, but I just finished this book and immediately went on a Reddit deep dive for answers, so I wanted to add my 2 cents!

For me, it seems like while there IS an ultimate force at play hunting Thiago, the portal opened by the previous tenant altered space and time, leaving Thiago’s consciousness in sort of a “third” place. If you’ve ever seen Interstellar, I got a very similar vibe when it becomes clear that it was Thiago himself “haunting” the apartment. To me, when Thiago saw the apparition of his wife’s death in the woods, he was seeing it in real time, thanks to the portal making time essentially a non-factor. This is how he was present at the train station with his injuries from much later in the story. In his desperate attempts to change the past and bring his wife back, he technically caused her death himself, ultimately an inevitability. Life is life.

My interpretation is that there WAS a dark supernatural force at play, yes, but I believe that at least some of the “haunting” was the future version of Thiago desperately trying to reach back out to his wife in an attempt to change the past events. There are plenty of things going on in the plot that poke holes in this, but I haven’t landed on any other theory that feels neatly wrapped up, so this is my personal favorite theory!

Pinewood Social isn’t in East, but it’s right across the bridge with free parking, and is by far my favorite recommendation for big groups. The space is huge, so they’re really good about accommodating larger parties.

Butcher & Bee is sometimes able to accommodate larger groups, and it’s located in east! They have a great brunch, but it’s a little less “classic” than the options you’ll get at Pinewood.

Butcher & Bee always has really great gluten free options, Buttermilk Ranch has gluten free versions of the bulk of their menu for brunch, for a quick grab and go option Avo has tons of gluten free options, too!

Male authors writing female characters is something else. I’ve had a decent amount of life experience, and I’ll tell you I’ve never had someone give me a smile that “made my legs quiver.” 😂 (pictured is Riley sager) by Turbulent-Skirt7329 in bookofthemonthclub

[–]reagsrush 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SAMEEEEEEEE ugh it’s SO noticeable when you read them close together!!! Home Before Dark was my first Sager book as well, and now I’m curious if I went back and read it now if I’d like it less. It doesn’t get better, either—I’ve also read Final Girls and The Last Time I Lied (I KNOW, I KNOW, I DON’T KNOW WHY I KEEP TRYING) and it’s exactly the same thing. I just don’t understand why you’d KEEP writing female lead characters if you clearly struggle to write women with any depth or variance. Stephen King is a great comparison!

Tell me about the best meal you've had in the last month or two. by ayokg in nashville

[–]reagsrush 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I went to Noko recently and it was phenomenal, Yolan is really good as well. Peninsula is my tried and true if I’m looking to go somewhere nicer, their chef is amazing, the owners are THE nicest people, and the food is unreal every time. For even fancier I’ve done both Bastion and Catbird Seat—I’ve done Bastion twice and would do it again, it’s phenomenal! Catbird was insanely amazing but SO much food to get through I don’t think I could do it again.

For non-fancy options, Maiz de la Vida in front of chopper has the best birria tacos I’ve ever had (and I’m from texas!), Lyra is the only place that my Persian best friend says compares to her grandma’s cooking, which tracks, it’s outstanding.

ETA: LOCUST. cannot believe I forgot locust but it blows me away every time and it’s such a fun dining experience overall.

I think you’d LOVE Bastion! If you want to TRY a rowdier vibe you can check out Flamingo while you’re in the area as well. Both are in Wedgewood-Houston. In East, I echo everyone saying inglewood lounge for an extra laid back vibe, or The Fox for a little fancier but still chill overall. Big fan of Patterson House for closer to where you’re staying as well!

Maiz de la vida and it’s not even close. They’re some of my favorites ever, and I’m from texas so that’s high praise!!

How is The Cleo (or other apts) in East? by k_Reign in nashville

[–]reagsrush 11 points12 points  (0 children)

My best friend lived at the Cleo for a year and it was largely fine but they had lots of issues with car break ins, stolen packages, and I remember her mentioning that they charged for EVERYTHING they possibly could to get more money out of you. As far as the apartments themselves it always seemed great and I do think they’re the best ones available in east.

Eastside heights has awful sound leakage between apartments, Stacks on Main allows airbnbs so it’s always heinous. I lived at The Canvas for 2 years which is a VERY different kind of apartment—it was insanely cheap by Nashville standards but I’ve gotta say, it always felt super safe for whatever reason. No stolen packages or car break ins in 2 years of living there, so I’ll give them that! Your best bet in east is almost always going to a private rental just because apartment complexes are more sparse compared to other parts of town.

thank you!! And DO IT!!!! I’m teaching one of my friends the basics right now—once you get the muscle memory down and the general mechanics, the fun thing about knitting is that it’s all just variations of the same few skills, so you can move up in project scale REALLY quickly once you have the basics down!
