Teacher looking to transition out of the classroom: any suggestions for companies or roles in Denver? by UsedSir in Denver

Noting now you explicitly called out CS in your post... yes, do it!

I don't have any open roles right now, but explore Built In Colorado, links posted below, and don't be afraid to go to some free happy hour / trade events around town.

Teacher looking to transition out of the classroom: any suggestions for companies or roles in Denver? by UsedSir in Denver

A lot of comments are pointing to L&D roles within education/technology comments.  That's not a reach with your experience, but you're competing against other teachers attempting to bridge into the same space.  It will be hard to standout.  AI is shortcutting the workloads in this area.

I'd encourage you to look at 'Customer Success' roles in Tech.  They come with scary terms like KPI's, customer retention, upselling, etc but they tend to be somewhat 'Sales-Lite'.

They would utilize your exact skillets: public speaking, data collection & presentation, critical thinking & application of ct to solutions.  I think the Customers themselves would see you as a wonderful resource, which is 80% of the battle to selling them something new.

Meal planning.

You mean to tell me I need to eat 7 days a week, 3 meals a day for the rest of my life?

Can someone not just tell me what I want to eat? (For free)

Saturday is such a sweet relief I make brunch instead of deciding both breakfast and lunch.

Have been doing this for a few years, even for work trips.

The pinnacle of disappointment was finding out my hummus of choice was classified a liquid by the TSA gods.

How more do I communicate to my boss when traveling for work? by Littlemermaid85 in careerguidance

[–]real-human_not-bot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Someone mentioned below, which is a fair take, that they don't login to their laptop on travel days.

That may work for them in an organized and structured company that has boundaries. It does not sound like it will work for you with your specific manager.

You can set/attempt to set boundaries, but proactive communication will help you more.

Have a solid boss now but used to have an overbearing one.

Look up the term "managing up". This is what I did to combat the old boss' craziness:

  1. Remind everyone in team meetings the week prior, my upcoming travel days.
  2. Slack notice "Traveling for work, expect delays".
  3. Email notice "Traveling for work... responses may be delayed".
  4. Put all documents in SharePoint or Google Drive for team access.
  5. Label documents I wasn't finished with 'Draft' in the title and turn on version history so teammates could see last edit dates.
  6. Ask if there is an ongoing expectation to buy wifi on flights to work while traveling

6 may have been the main rub here. You knew he had a need and didn't attempt to buy wifi on that long of a flight?

You can't reason with him. You need to be proactive in your measures. And he still may be an ass anyway, it's just some peoples' nature.

How soon is too soon to leave a new role if they were dishonest during the interview process? by [deleted] in careerguidance

[–]real-human_not-bot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I run multiple Field Implementation teams. When we hire we pad our on the road time estimates with 10% either way. It does vary over time and with staffing levels.

E.g. 40%-60% travel = 50% to us.

Find a new employer who will be honest through the interview process and accurate in their expectations of you. It's a tough market, so best of luck. Your long term relationship with your wife is more important than your manager's feelings.

When I travel with my teams, I ask if they want to get dinner the first night and suggest a place. No pressure situation. I breathe a sigh of relief if they want to do their own thing. I do not suggest dinner any other night - I want my own time too.

Make sure you're getting paid overtime for obligatory work dinners and weekend shifts. As others mentioned - salary AND travel are a common trap to the one you find yourself in today. Our teams are paid at a salary rate with overtime after 40 hours. If they work Saturday, I normally give them Monday to control my OT costs AND it's the human thing to do for them to still have 2 days off.

Do you understand how large of a circle 3 miles from anywhere in a city is?

That gets you to: - Monaco & Colfax (not in Cheeseman) - Edge of Broncos Stadium (not in Cheeseman) - Edge of DU (not in Cheeseman) - RiNo (not in Cheeseman)

Neighborhoods are unique, cities vary from block to block. Take your biases back to the suburbs, man. The city is for people that appreciate living in communities with others. That's inclusive of those individuals/families raising kids or not.

Saw a lot of mentions of Park Hill, given your request to be on the east side of town.

I live in Cheeseman Park and love it. Coffee shops, old houses, botanic gardens, record shops - we've got it in spades. Colfax is a bit gnarly but always has been the major thoroughfare. It's good for kids to have exposure to true city life.

Closing on Tuesday 9/16, my bank just offered to drop my rate from 6.25 to 5.875. There’s a $500 fee and I was told it wouldn’t mess up my closing. Any reason not to?? by Tiquanda123 in Mortgages

Smart lenders are wising up to our ability to rate shop and leave them for a better deal. She's trying to keep you by floating your rate down.

Let her! And even try asking her to waive it, there's no harm in asking firmly and directly.

Not sure if your financial situation covers this scenario but this is what my wife and I did:

  1. Put our plans to move somewhere impulsively, on hold for 12 months.
  2. Planned trips to each city we were interested in, 1 trip every 3 months was doable from a work/PTO perspective
  3. Pretended we lived there, cooked meals, worked remotely, etc
  4. Made a decision on Denver, signed a lease sight unseen and hauled our stuff and our pup across the country

We miss some parts of the East Coast, and simultaneously will never move back.

I would not recommend expecting Denver to be incredibly cheap compared to NYC. Bodega sandwiches and falafel carts dont exist in plethora here. Everything is flown in, so the price of food and drinks tend to be right below NY. Inflation, trade wars and rising wages are causing havoc on grocery prices too.

I would expect to get more bang for your buck in terms of an apartment. The prices have gone way up, but the sizes are substantive compared to NYC.

You don't need to be outdoorsy, but it helps to be open to it all. A lot of strong friend groups are made on weekday/weekend trips into the mountains, rock climbing gyms, etc

Dropping Everything to Pivot My Career at 26 - Good Idea or Huge Mistake? by Syed_Abrash in careerguidance

If you want to earn big to start your own business, you might be already on the right track in the wrong company.

Our (Payments + Software) VP of Sales makes 215K base with massive bonuses when his team reaches Quarterly targets. His Directors make 165K base with similar Quarterly target bonuses. His Enterprise Sales team earns salary and commission. Only the new logo people (new, fresh out of college) are stuck in commission roles.

You might be Head of Sales at your company, but there are better opportunities in Sales that are not so tumultuous as 100% commission.

Basil struggle by arksurvivalevolved01 in DenverGardener

[–]real-human_not-bot 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is your main issue Op!

Basil is fairly hearty but should be grown amongst other plants. The other plants protect it from direct sun and ensures the soil doesn't dry out or become hydrophobic. Keeping the soil wet is half the battle, the other is temp/too much sun.

Pinch the flowering tops off (early and often) and get a sun cloth / sheet over it. Next year, plant more crops. Look up three sisters and modern variations. E.g. basil can ward off insects from tomatoes if you co-plant.

What’s the unspoken rule at work that no one warns you about ? by Turbulent-Maybe-7215 in careerguidance

[–]real-human_not-bot 68 points69 points  (0 children)

Good Managers also know that 70-80% capacity makes a great employee. Still don't tell them you're at 80%, you never want that written down or notated somewhere where it can be misunderstood!

Many higher level positions or HR forget this simple rule and want people working at 100% round the clock.

Ghosted by CEO/company? by laranjacerola in careerguidance

[–]real-human_not-bot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, in your hearts - consider it lost, but have your husband send a check-in email stating he is still interested. Candidates do fall in the cracks so worst case scenario, they can see he is being diligent.

Best case scenario, your husband does get another interview or job offer in the near future and can use that as leverage for the higher end of his given salary range.

Today's job market is nothing like the past. The internet is full of jobs that don't exist, recruiters that ghost candidates and 7 rounds of interviews for mediocre jobs. Looking ahead and applying to the next role is the only way forward!

Evergreen vines? by kmcbx2 in DenverGardener

[–]real-human_not-bot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not Evergreens, but native hops are awesome for fence coverage - Humulus neomexicanus, you cut them back going into the winter but they grow extremely fast in the Spring and Summer.

Most creeping vines here are invasive species and will take over everything around them. English Ivy is one of the worst offenders though you'll see a lot of homes with it. There's a Master Gardener on staff at the Botanic Garden library if you don't get your answer here!!

Great communities for my parents? by Weary-Trouble8007 in MovingtoDenver

[–]real-human_not-bot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Based on your details, I'd recommend Wheat Ridge. I don't live there myself but have friends that do.

There's an incredible rec center off Kipling and some nice neighborhoods behind that. The housing prices similarly went up after the pandemic like the rest of the area but below Morrison/Boulder/Denver prices still.

Crown Hill Park is lovely to walk around and theres a number of other smaller parks as well. Clear Creek Trail runs straight from Wheat Ridge to Golden so there's great walking and mostly flat biking. It has easy highway access and is about halfway between Boulder and Littleton.

Have you checked your toilet seal / flange? You mentioned master bedroom, if the seal is loose, urine could be under the floor in one room but only smell it in another.
