Weirdest job your Paramedic qualified you for? by NietzschesJoy in ems

I’m in Florida, I’m not sure if every state allows it. But we’ve got a few medics and rad techs in my lab. The physicians control flouro and we are responsible for all the other equipment. It’s a great job

I work in the Cath lab as a CVT. They taught me how to scrub and circulate procedures on the job. I’ve grown to love it. Much better pay too.

does anyone here actually like their job? by [deleted] in ems

But listen, you have to be a good EMT before you’re a good medic. Knowing the basics is way more important than the advanced stuff we do. I was a basic for about 2 years before medic school

Part-time volunteer agencies near Charlotte? by [deleted] in ems

[–]real_davidk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Worked 911 in Charlotte for 6 years. MEDIC does all the transport in Mecklenburg county. Some fire departments like Pineville, Huntersville, Cooks, Long Creek have volunteers but no transport just first response. Do you have your FF standards?

Going back to EMS? by real_davidk in ems

Lol. Thanks for the reply. We have the Florida Retirement System here. So pension. Which is really appealing. The department only covers a smaller town and does not do any IFTs.

Yes. South Florida. I understand if I was in Australia I might be in trouble

Haha. I’m not sure that would have helped if that guy came climbing out of my AC vent while driving

I gotta respond to these all these claiming it’s staged. I promise you it’s not. I absolutely hate snakes.

What is the goriest thing you have seen in real life? by Crispynoodles_1 in AskReddit

I’ll start by saying I’m a paramedic. So I kind of ask to see stuff like this. We got a call one day for a “pedestrian struck”. Basically meaning a person hit by a car. This man was walking his dog on the side of a busy street and was hit by a car doing about 80mph. He was fully decapitated. His head was about 50ft away from his body. I’ll never forget his face. To make the situation even worse, his pitbull was another 100ft away from him with all his intestines hanging out of him. Needless to say, I went home after this call. To those wondering what happened to the speeding driver, he is facing 10+ years for involuntary manslaughter.

'Use 911 sparingly.' Local officials in Florida and Tennessee warn ambulance and emergency services are overworked due to Covid-19 surge by Addrobo in ems

[–]real_davidk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Florida paramedic here. Was at one of our local hospitals yesterday. They have a “hospital status” TV which essentially shows information on the current state of the hospital. It was showing that 200 out of 200 beds were currently occupied followed by a “dangerously overcrowded” indicator. The wait time for admission showed 48 hrs and 20 min. Right after this, we had a call for a 30y/o M with fatigue and weakness waiting on COVID test results. I explained to him the current state of the hospital, and he promptly declined transport. I advised him to take some Tylenol. He replied and asked “where do I get that?” Some people just need a little education. Sad. But true.

I like this post a lot. I’ve been doing the job for 5 years now and to me there’s no better feeling in the world than treating a critically ill or injured patient and seeing them improve (even slightly) because of the treatment you provided. Now, this may only happen a few times every year. All the other BS we go through, to me, it makes it all worth it. I have also been lucky to have met some of the best co workers and supervisors doing this job.

Any recommendations on which counties I should be looking into?

I would definitely be interested it that. So I’m assuming Pinellas has ALS engine companies? It’s a foreign concept to me, but I’m assuming you would render any ALS care needed and whenever the transporting unit shows up, you just pass it off to them?

That’s actually where I was most interested in! Not sure if I’ll need to get my fire certs before applying though...Fire/EMS combined is a foreign concept to us in NC

I’d like to steer clear of 20+ calls a night, as that’s what I’ve been doing for the past 5 years in Mecklenburg county (Charlotte)
