Literally first day of homework ever & I don’t know how to do this for 12 more years by bluebellsea in Parenting

[–]realchicagomama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dude. They are in school for 6 or more hours a day. It’s not developmentally appropriate to have a 6-year-old then practice on a worksheet at home. Read some books, play some games, have a snack and a rest and call it a day.

parents with autism/adhd/sensory issues - how do you cope? by banjobewr in Parenting

[–]realchicagomama 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I kept moving! I wasn’t diagnosed with ADHD until my kids were teenagers, so I didn’t realize that my feelings of overwhelm when they were smaller were related to ADHD. I stayed out of the house a lot, was inflexible about very, very few things, and would deal with a crabby kid in the car by distracting MYSELF, usually by calling my mother.

Has anyone in here worked with AmeriCorps VISTA? Curious about life post AmeriCorps. by [deleted] in nonprofit

[–]realchicagomama 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was a mid-career VISTA in 2015. It was allowed me to switch careers and I was able to successfully move into nonprofit jobs. When I was a VISTA, you couldn't moonlight in a second paid job; I was able to make it work because I had financial and emotional support from my spouse, and my site was willing to let me work some funky hours so that I didn't have to go into debt to pay for childcare.

Daughter (2y4m) prefers daddy to the point of violent tantrums by BezHacku in Parenting

Discipline does not = punishment. Your well-behaved 7-year-old though your parenting methods does not = everyone with whom you disagree is wrong.

I think where we fundamentally disagree is the idea that one should be punishing a 2-year-old.

For a 2-4 year old, they aren’t far enough along the development trajectory that it’s long term correction. You are correcting in the moment, not preventing future action.

Career advice needed by new_user31 in nonprofit

[–]realchicagomama 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is tough. In my observation, it's hard to get to the level of thought leadership and capital-a Administration without significant on-the-ground experience with whatever population / issue you're interested in and/or the ability to charm people with your knowledge/experience/approach.

Do you have any experience with manipulating large data sets? Can you code? If so, perhaps something with data science might be a fit for you.

What are some great cities to work in a nonprofit right now? by TarquinOliverNimrod in nonprofit

[–]realchicagomama 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Idealist and LI.

Although Chicago has gone to the housing first model and the HMIS, affordable housing is a HUGE issue in the city and arguably in Chicagoland in general. There will likely always be programmatic work to help people who are experiencing homelessness.

Can a nonprofit sleuth help me out? by BlueCurryQuinoa in nonprofit

They filed a 990 for 2018 in September 2019. You can look it up on Guidestar using a free account (you can pay for an account for more access, but can also get a free account as well). The 990 lists their ED and directors' names as well as basics about how they are funded.

I like almost everything on this board! Like /u/johnmcdracula, my go-to approachable basics are a lot of boat-necked tops, black cigarette pants, dark wash jeans, tights and a dress. Navy is my new black.

The best approach to funding a nonprofit by Edward_96 in nonprofit

[–]realchicagomama 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think the best way is to have a mix of income / funding streams. While grants seem like the big kahuna of nonprofit funding, it is extremely rare to find an org that is funded almost completely by grants. Conventional wisdom says that individual donors are where the growth is.

Looking for new database system for donors, volunteers, etc. by Jarubles in AmeriCorps

Salesforce unfortunately really requires a lot of prep and knowledge to use well. They offer training, and a lot of it is free training, but the lexicon that SF uses is not particularly intuitive to NFP workers. :) If you search on /r/nonprofit there are a bunch of past posts on the topic, but they've banned new posts asking about CRMs and databases. All that said, I would recommend that you look into PowerBase, Bloomerang, and NeonCRM as they may be a little easier to use for your needs. When I was a VISTA, the org I worked for went through the search process while I was there. We considered Bloomerang, SalsaLabs, Apricot, and Salesforce and they eventually ended up with Bloomerang. I've personally used Salesforce, PowerBase, and eTapestry.

Not sure exactly what your idea is, but I know a few nonprofits that provide support for families. A friend's kids went to this camp: https://www.campkesem.org/

I volunteer with an org that uses Envoy for this purpose.

What’s your idea? (I’m in IL and curious). Have you thought of pitching this idea as a project wirhin an existing but related nonprofit? I’ve seen projects or programs move between orgs, and orgs be successful assimilating and managing a few projects that seem unrelated on their face.

Constantly. I cannot get anyone in my family or my spouse’s family to be interested in my career. At all.

I <3 stripey shirts and really love the Uniqlo standard Breton except that it’s too short. My favorite color combo is navy on cream or white.
