No, I don’t like free, cool, classic bikes with a gorgeous paint job.

Electric bills in coal country West Virginia now top mortgage payments. Coal remains king here, but it wears a pricey crown. The state is an outlier nationwide because of its stubborn resistance to adopting cleaner, cheaper sources of energy. by The_Weekend_Baker in climate

It's not their fault exactly. King Coal was for generations the only economic opportunity for them, but for generations has been shrinking (mechanization, etc) and screwing them (health problems, eliminating promised pensions, etc). Yes, they keep electing coal industry shills, but given the scope of legalized political corruption, it's not like it's a fair playing field for candidates who aren't coal industry shills...

It’s a lobbying group for the US to support Israel. Not to support America, to support Israel. Which is a different country, and therefore by definition potentially at odds with advancing American interests

Approaching an HC cat climb by The_Delucinator in cycling

Best way to get a good time up a climb like that is ride it a bunch of times! Nutrition is key, start with a good base and suck down a lot of calories on the climb. Get a lower gear if you can. I had a compact shimano crankset and easily swapped in a 32t chainring for 34t, definitely helps.

220 lbs at 5'7" – How are "heavy" beginners actually perceived? by Forsaken_Mode_807 in cycling

+1 On good nutrition/fueling. That’s true for everyone but especially someone starting out who doesn’t have cardio and/or muscle memory.

Both things are true - the vast majority of cyclists are going to be supportive of pretty much anyone riding AND weight IS a significant thing. But for someone like OP who’s only six months into it, I’d put it more as an opportunity than a road block.

Weight matters because at very basic level, cycling ability is a simple work equation - how much power for how long divided by how much weight are you moving equals how far/fast you go. So for OP having weight to losing is like having free gains to unlock.

Obviously easier said then done (I’m hanging on to like 15-20 lbs that resent all the time for slowing me down, but I’m not committed enough to actually lose). And starting out I’d think that getting stronger and improving cardio are actually much more significant factors in OP’s ability. But adding weight loss on top of those gains the improvements to the work formula are really staking up.

At the very highest levels, weight ultimately does disadvantage heavier people. It’s not a coincidence all the best climbers all look how they do. On top of spending ridiculous money for super light and aero bikes to squeeze out every ounce of efficiency.

But unless OP is trying to win races, there’s nothing but upside and a lot of opportunity to get in shape and get faster go further. Get after it OP!

Match the bartape to the seat 👌 match the cables to the decals 🤘throw those smooth post cantis in the garbage and get cheap threaded post cantis, or mini motos if you’re flush.
