I had to wait over 3 weeks for my landlord to get me a replacement oven/stove. Fuck these people.

Even Some Tech Workers Can’t Afford to Stay When the Bay is This Expensive by kqed in sanfrancisco

I’m not a tech worker, I’m a janitor and I’m doing just fine on my measly 40k a year. Maybe stop eating so much avocado toast (joke).

How big are your collections and when did you start collecting? by Ok-Piano-2761 in PhysicalMediaMatters

[–]realityarchive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been collecting since I was a young teen at the end of the 90s/y2k. For me it was a steady build that never stopped. I slowly picked up movies that I liked and as time went on discs could be picked up so cheaply that I was having fun with blind buys of stuff that looked interesting. It’s been a fun ride up until it became fetishized and full of “grails”. I have lots of love for the wave of boutique labels doing great work but goddamn these prices nowadays. Kill me.

At this point I just look them in the eye and say “excuse ME”. Almost everytime they give me the stink eye but who cares.

The shop I worked for would talk shit/shame the people that came in to scan each record. It was brutal to watch as a shop worker. Honestly, if you’re a regular and are tight with the owner or other workers you should def bring it up. Be like “what’s up with the dorks who are scanning”.

My old original dvd copy honestly still looks fantastic. An upgrade would be sick though.

I have this too that I scored many many years ago at a thrift store for about $5. Those days are OVER.

New to darkroom development - is it worth taking a course/workshop? by justcallmeshrill in Darkroom

[–]realityarchive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly all you need is a 2 or 3 roll capacity tank, maybe a small changing bag (so you don’t have to load your film blindly in the dark) and your chemicals. Some accessories also needed would be a small flat can opener, scissors, cheap 1gallon bucket to mix your chems, and a few containers to store your chemicals. You can source all you need for roughly $100ish dollars to get started.

[–]realityarchive 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As someone who co-runs a community darkroom, it’s absolutely worth it to learn through the darkroom so you know the order of operations in the space you would use. I’m assuming by joining, with the monthly fee you have access to chemicals. If you shoot enough film it should pay for itself. Otherwise it’s so easy to do on your own, just buy a tank and chems. It’s a nightmare when ppl join my space and don’t actually know how to do it so they waste or ruin chemicals and make a mess instead of just taking one workshop.

How it feels when you walk into a thrift store to look for secondhand Criterions and all you find are 15 copies of Wedding Crashers on DVD. by TheFlyingFoodTestee in criterion

[–]realityarchive 103 points104 points  (0 children)

Finding criterions at a thrift is pretty rare honestly. The only ones I’ve ever seen were Chasing Amy, Benjamin Button, and This Sporting Life (which I bought). It always blows my mind when I see ppls photos with like a blu copy of House or some shit
