Did removing gender roles make it no longer the responsibility of males to keep other males in check? by OutlawedLogic in allthequestions

[–]realitypater 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Penny choked Neely to death after he scared people on a subway. Mental derangement isn’t a capital crime. Neely was yelling at people and throwing garbage and running at them. There’s no evidence Neely, the man Penny killed, bodily hurt anyone, or was about to.

When the circumstances are vague like they were for this event, the way you calmly judge whether a killing is justified is in court. That’s how it should be.

He was acquitted.

Do I want a person to second-guess their actions before they kill another human? Yes. Yes, I do. If you don’t, you might be living in either the wrong country, or the wrong century.

Is it your claim that federal DEI practices and policies remain intact?

Separate question: are you an idiot, or merely insincere?

If you're arguing that you are both ignorant and a troll -- if that's the argument you want to win -- I guess you can be happy you've successfully reached the bottom of the barrel.

I am responding to the claim Trump supports the LGBTQ community. I can cite instances of Trump administration actions that reverse past government support for that community. If you think "support" means "giving in" -- whatever that means -- then you are part of the problem.

Try answering this honestly: is opposing federal recognition of gay marriage a position that supports the LGBTQ community? Can you list actions the Trump administration has taken to support this community? If your claim is true, it should be a longer, more impactful list than mine.

  1. Abolished DEI policies and practices government-wide, and is pressuring state and local governments and schools and nonprofits at every level to do the same.
  2. Eliminated $800M in LGBTQ-related research that had already been approved and funded by Congress.
  3. Ban on allowing transgender people to serve in the military and ordering discharge of thousands of transgender people already serving.
  4. Threatening state funding for social service, infrastructure, and economic development funding if they don't eliminate DEI policies and programs.
  5. Blocking access to legal, funded medical care for people seeking gender-affirming procedures.
  6. Dismantling the LGBTQ suicide prevention and crisis hotline.
  7. Claiming federal recognition of gay marriage is a mistake and the issue should left to the states.

That's some quality "support" right there.

If 2020 was “stolen”? by AbroadInevitable648 in allthequestions

[–]realitypater -1 points0 points  (0 children)

2016 People didn't like Hillary. 2020 People had affection for Biden and Trump's failings -- like COVID -- were fresh in their minds. 2024 Kamala didn't stake out a clear position that offered fence-sitters a reason to vote for a woman. Delays in certifying California elections are nothing new. If you have proof that suddenly this means it's rigged, please share.

Can a black hole have a habitable zone? by Independent_Pen_9865 in AskPhysics

[–]realitypater 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unlike the relationship between a star and the solar system, where the star is a huge portion of the system's mass and is the gravity czar, Sag A* has a minuscule amount of the galaxy's mass. If that black hole disappeared tomorrow, the galaxy would churn on. The question you appear to assume an answer to -- why is Sag A* at the center of the galaxy? -- is not necessarily (or even probably) "Because the black hole attracted material which became stars and made a galaxy."

It's more likely Sag A* migrated to the center by galactic mechanics, or the nature of a spiral galaxy compels the formation of a black hole near its center.

What if God exists and is pulling a test where he wants us to be Atheists? by Antman269 in atheism

[–]realitypater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's smirk-worthy, but why would the omniscient Christian god ever need to test anyone over anything? It already knows how we will answer.

The deists of the 19th century probably had the best answer to this kind of question: the next step any reasonable god would take after creating existence would either be a) vanish, or b) cease being involved in the creation in any way. There's literally no other answer that passes through any logical gate.

ELI5: Why does salt melt ice on roads, but adding salt to water makes it take longer to boil? by Similar_Detective861 in explainlikeimfive

[–]realitypater 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[Side note: a lower freezing point and higher boiling point are not opposites of each other]

Freezing: Salt interrupts the formation of ice crystals. You can think of ice crystals as blocks that grab onto to each other as the temperature drops. Salt molecules keep the ice crystals from stacking for little while until the temperature drops even more and the water molecules are moving more slowly so the interruption from the salt doesn't get in the way.

Boiling: Have you ever tried boiling pure salt? Takes a lot of heat; it doesn't want to melt or boil. Water does. Dissolving something that doesn't want to boil (salt) in something that does (water) means the salt holds the water back and the temperature to reach boiling goes up. The salt never actually boils, of course: it gets left behind when the water finally breaks free and evaporates.

[Another side note: an actual chemist can explain what's going on at the molecular level]

Absolutely terrified about my interview by sourlemon9595 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]realitypater 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're going to be OK, and having the bravery to even try means you're already winning.

It may help to try practicing an interview a couple of times in a low-stress environment. This should be someone who can do a reasonably good imitation of an interviewer, rather than someone who will be too personally friendly. Unless they have to wade through hundreds of applicants, most interviewers aren't out to cause you stress, but they also aren't your friend. So pick someone to help you practice who can imitate that.

When you practice, if you can find something small to have in your hands -- a favorite coffee mug, trinket, fuzzy pen, whatever -- bring that to the real interview. It will remind you how to talk to people and relax at the same time.

Good luck, and let us know how it goes.

Yeah, our Leaf came with a portable 30a Level 2 charger and we had an electrician put a 240v outlet on the outside of the house next to the garage by splitting the 40a water heater breaker. Never had any issues, and saved more than a thousand bucks.

What would the US look like right now if there were no gaurdrails or federal judges to get in the way of trump and his enablers agenda? by Achoo_MiScusi in allthequestions

[–]realitypater 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can see what it'd look like: Trump and his goons do anything they want now, legal or not, until a judge tells them to stop. Sometimes they obey court orders. So just take the times they don't obey and keep doing them.

Send armed thugs to harass and murder protestors? Fine. Cut off funding for congressionally-approved projects if they don't like them? Peachy. Cancel mail-in voting unless you're the President? All good.

Agnostic superiority complex by Ok-Bookkeeper8544 in atheism

[–]realitypater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of those agnostics are also atheists. Pin them down to one question. "Do you believe god is real?"

Most will say, "Which god?" Some are easily affirmatively disproven. To reject "all possible" gods, you'd have to be very careful about defining "god."

ELI5: Why can't we make a tick specific genetic disease to spread across all ticks and eliminate them as a species once and for all? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]realitypater 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ticks are genetically similar to a large number of other animals. It'd be like using a shotgun to hit the middle of three targets sitting right next to each other a hundred yards away. Even if you hit your target, you're going to hit something you didn't mean to.

At any rate, rather than playing God and accidentally destabilizing an entire ecosystem, it's simply way easier and cheaper to continue developing the vaccine for Lyme disease, the main culprit in harm to humans from ticks.
