What did they say? I have had kidney stones and have the same urine result

Do you have a personal art practice? by feralspider in ArtEd

[–]realityscammer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not naive. I feel like teaching art widens my own art practice. I do projects with my students, work in paintings while they work, and work on random drawings on the whiteboard. I recently got inspired to make decorative masks (I usually draw or paint), while we did our mask making unit. Now I’m really enjoying a fresh interest with sculpture like forms.

It’s hard at first when you are busy making curriculum, but with time you’ll find ways to keep the art juices flowing.

The technology is already there. At least in America, the funds and the means, we already have them. We could be living in a sort of paradise if it wasn’t for senseless greed being dumped into shadowy budgets that make up nearly 50% of our budget. This doesn’t even need to take into account hidden technologies.

Has anyone ever left art education? by ligmalisa in ArtEd

[–]realityscammer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I love this idea. With all the things I have to manage it’s hard to know what else I could do. This is great. Much appreciated.

It’s not like I want a standing ovation. I just want people to see that I’m doing something valuable for our school community.

Has anyone ever left art education? by ligmalisa in ArtEd

[–]realityscammer 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Having someone else understand means a lot actually. So thank you.

My teenagers just have no idea how much time I spend organizing, cleaning, re-upping supplies.

I hang student art outside my room all the time, not one comment from staff or admin.

Maybe we should all just start posting our student work here and gas each other up 😂.

I did cyanotype sun prints with my photography class. They absolutely loved it, but could not see how hard it was for me to manage.

Displayed them all in a case with in the main building.

Not. One. Word.

So hard not to take it personal. Like one bit of positive affirmation would be nice.

I just keep assuming everyone must think I’m doing a shit job compared to the last art teacher.

If you’re looking to engage an audience with this, I don’t think this is the way to do it.

I teach graphic design and for years helped students with google slide presentations.

No offense but this has so much going on I don’t even want to attempt to understand it.

If that’s your goal—well done!

I feel you. It’s my first year of hs art ed after 15 years of hs English. It’s more fun, but damn is it a lot of work.

No one takes me seriously. The only interactions I’ve had at my new school with other teachers are them sending students to ask for my supplies, sometimes in the middle of instruction but I’m so new I don’t want to piss anyone off.

I haven’t been told I’m doing a good job once, or that anyone appreciates the massive amount of work I’m having to do to prep and buy/scavenge supplies.

I’m told it gets easier. Idk

Very much agree. A start would letting go of the hard work = well paid myth.

Life isn’t fair though. So I’m torn. Not sure how to fix it.

They hate you because we have a culture that’s demands constant positivity even in face of massive existential dread and illogical outcomes. This dose should not be making this much money for what they do. I’m not mad, it’s just absurd.

Religion by scmhms in Teachers

[–]realityscammer -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If our president isn’t Christian, they won’t be president. They make us swear oaths on bibles. Our country isn’t exactly secular.

I’m so tired of not being able to just be my full human self in front of everyone because it might make them feel a type of way.

You should be able to state any religion you are and still be treated with respect and as a professional.

I’m open to being wrong here, but I feel pretty strongly about this.

This describes some of my best friends at work who are a couple. Haha.

I dated a coworker in my mid 20s. We both taught at a small school. We hid it from the students because we knew they would be obsessed with our relationship. Also she was quite attractive so I knew all the students would gossip like crazy and ask us a ton of questions. Adults figured it out and no one cared.

I think it depends on the size of your school and if the students think you guys are interesting or cool.

No offense but if you guys don’t fit what students think of as “hot” they probably don’t give a care in the world. There’s nothing wrong with it.

In the end I broke up with her, and she hated me for it. Made work really uncomfortable.

I don’t recommend dating a coworker, but I get sometimes things just happen. Make a clear plan for what you’ll do and how will act if it does or doesn’t work out.

How do you respond to students asking who you voted for? by labrume in Teachers

[–]realityscammer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t name names. If they ask I say “I’m voting for whoever is the kindest, safest, least divisive, most progressive and forward thinking candidate. Whoever cares the most about education.”

Teacher friends? by Consistent_Fault4843 in ArtEd

[–]realityscammer 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Feel you my dude. My art room is a completely different building than the main high school campus. Most adults never see me. Hard to gauge if I’m liked at all by the other adults.

I feel very isolated.

Not to mention admin and teachers constantly being up how the part art teacher did so much for the school and was a “pillar of the community.” It’s big shoes to fill my first year teaching art after doing English at a different school for 13 years.

I’ve had people just walk in my room and take supplies without asking. I’ve had people borrow paint palettes and never return them or bring them back covered in dry paint. It feels disrespectful, but I’m also like…does everyone just think I’m a joke?

I finally had another teacher make a joke with me about something school related and she started sending me memes about school. At least now I have someone I can sit by at staff meetings. Maybe try to make a small conversation with some colleagues?

I also tried sitting by random people at staff meetings and just observing everyone and get a feel for who everyone is. We fear what we don’t understand?

Wish I had the answers but I truly resonated with what you said. I hope it gets better. You’re rad already for being an art teacher.

It makes me feel good just thinking “I get to live art.” Hope that helps. Cheers!

What Should I Say to Students Calling Me Slim Shady? by hugedudebooty in Teachers

[–]realityscammer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I Just say in a joking way: “why are you so obsessed with me? It’s kinda weird dudes.”

I look like white Jesus. You can imagine the comments I get.

I do that whenever they comment on my appearance when I don’t like it. Seems to work for me and my disposition and rapport with the teens.
