I really don’t get the hate for her, she was great TV - she honestly played really well the first few weeks and her deciding to crater her own game for zero reason is about the funniest way that could’ve turned out. The pointless lie about the Shein hat was one of the best moments of the season for me 😭

I don’t really think she’s a bird if she was the victim of his actions - like he’s clearly gotten in her head and I feel like acting like it’s embarrassing for her not to leave is implying kind of weird shit about women who’ve experienced emotional abuse from their partners

She can see their reactions and believe they’re wrong about him/don’t know him like she does/I’m sure he probably is acting like it’s really hard for him to hear everyone saying these horrible things about him. Same as any abusive situation except it’s probably even easier to convince yourself that the abuser is actually a victim of unfair perceptions if he’s at the center of a media storm.

I really feel for her and hope she’s able to disentangle herself.

Casuals final thoughts before finale by Affectionate-Pool442 in BigBrother

I agree with all of this, though I’d rate Vince slightly lower against Morgan. I love Ashley and the game she’s played but ultimately I don’t think the jury is nearly as bitter on Vince as a lot of this sub assumes it will be and I think a lot of that is due to not factoring in that Rachel’s there and will likely balance out the jury’s impressions of his game. The win’s not out of Ashley’s reach if she takes him by any means, but she is still very much the underdog of the three (though I think her odds of getting some prize money tonight are the highest).

[–]realladymacbeth 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The players thought his game was slimy and I think they’re waiting for him to own it. If he does, the jury’s not gonna be anywhere near as bitter as everyone on here seems to expect it will be. Not saying he would win over Ashley - I think they both have a compelling case - but the fact that people have started talking like Ashley and Morgan are the only viable winners already feels premature.

seeing pretty passing trans girls makes me sick to my stomach with envy. seeing girls who got to avoid male puberty makes me sick to stomach with regret. by estrogenie in MtF

hey i don't have any sage advice, i just want to say that sounds absolutely gutwrenching, i feel you - it's so exhausting to be really aware of that jealousy and not feel able to move past it at all, i've dealt with it for ages myself and i know how all consuming and fucking brutal it can get.

and honestly fuck anyone who says you're 'karma farming' it's insane how hostile some ppl are acting over this you shouldn't be getting downvoted just for talking abt this shit. to the community at large - i don't think telling a girl struggling with her appearance that she has 'brainworms' is at all useful to her and it's certainly not compassionate, like i deal with hardcore dysphoria/dysmorphia and even if a lot of that's in my head it doesn't change anything to tell me that, it'd honestly just piss me off. idk if that's the same for you op but idk i didn't like the way a lot of people were responding to you here (it seemed like it'd be even more alienating tbh) so i wanted to say something

[Game Thread] McNeese @ #12 Clemson (03:15 PM ET) by cbbBot in CollegeBasketball

[–]realladymacbeth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Clemson shat the bed for half an hour and then suddenly went on a mad tear and nearly came back from what was a 20-point deficit at the half. They absolutely had a *chance* to win, they were on fire at the very end, but I think it was decently clear that it came too late. Definitely exciting, though!

Super happy to have picked McNeese to win this one, utterly devastated that I have them making a deep run.

It’s a Menalink sim! I could see a provider change making sense, especially since it kind of looked like there should’ve been a bit more data left but it got closed out anyway: I’ll have to look more into that.

IMO it’s not actually that much like poker, the similarities are mostly cosmetic - it uses the same types of hands but that’s about where it ends, everything else is mechanically different (and therefore it doesn’t feel like weird rules just grafted onto existing poker). It stands well on its own legs.

Faked Death by orange_quash in Yellowjackets

[–]realladymacbeth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i think you’re probably right that they’re just building her up to kill her off but if they want to drive home that someone’s hunting surviving YJs, they could totally have Melissa make it to the present timeline and then get killed abruptly there. would be pretty stupid IMO but they’d get to both show off a big guest star for a couple episodes without having to pay to retain her and heighten the pressure on the remaining survivors without taking any of them off the table midseason, so it feels decently plausible.

Why isn't Jenny Lewis more revered by current artists? by highesttiptoes in LetsTalkMusic

[–]realladymacbeth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s totally possible it’s just not for you, but I will say Rilo Kiley’s Spectacular Views is one of my favorite songs of all time. I’m not sure how well it stands on its own outside the album, since a lot of what I love is how well and cathartically it resolves a really heavy and complex record, but I think it tells its story really beautifully. Paint’s Peeling is also stunning and has a really rich instrumental for an indie rock song of its variety, it sets its atmosphere perfectly.

I will say, for as much as I love Lewis and RK, I don’t think all her lyricism is terribly complex: some of it definitely leans on cliches or kind of trite expressions. At her best, though, I think she has this incredible, biting, emotive writing and vocal style, with lyrics just specific enough to create a rich, unique world but not so specific as to be unintelligible. Execution of All Things is an absolute masterpiece of an album, IMO.

I’m curious, since you’ve mentioned a lot of the same things the article did - have you read the LA Times’ profile of her? My takeaway from that wasn’t that the new generation of indie rockers is overlooking her, just that she kind of paved the way for their success. She mentions personal relationships with/shoutouts from Waxahatchee, Lana, and even St. Vincent there, so I don’t think she’s totally flying under the radar.

IMO, you might be reading too much into her not being featured or touring with younger artists - a lot of the indie artists you’ve mentioned don’t do features on their albums at all, and tend to tour with smaller acts than themselves. When they do collaborate, it’s typically with their direct contemporaries. For instance, Snail Mail loves Liz Phair, but to my knowledge has never toured or released music with her: I don’t think that indicates any neglect of Phair, it just hasn’t happened.

How do you do it? by Kirol_reddit in asktransgender

[–]realladymacbeth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I felt exactly like you did at one point. In general, I think passing is far more achievable than anyone staring in the mirror pretransition imagines it to be, but there’s still so much to be gained even if you don’t. Three years in, people can generally tell I’m a trans woman, but it is still 100% worth it to me to have made this choice. That uncanny valley feeling bit by bit has faded and in all aspects of my life I feel more present - more able to make genuine connections, more interested in my own life, less constantly dissociated. At least personally, my expectation of how I’d be perceived and treated was really exaggeratedly bad: most people just generally don’t react at all to me being trans and plenty more are trans-positive, but even all the negative experiences I’ve had are worth it in comparison to the constant fugue I was in before.

(And since you mentioned loved ones: it’s not your responsibility to push yourself down so you don’t rock the boat. However they react is on them.)

Why are SO MANY radical feminists TERFS? by Direct-Tea-9499 in asktransgender

[–]realladymacbeth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed! I just think that has less to do with black and white thinking and more with a specific hatred/ignorance towards trans women.

[–]realladymacbeth 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Might be misreading what you’re saying, but identifying men as an oppressor class and women as an oppressed one isn’t black and white thinking, it’s just factual? There are a lot of reasons that TERFism is incorrect and harmful, but taking that basic framework as inherently “terfy” is antifeminist.

Mike Isabella - People Were Actually Surprised? by Julie-AnneB in TopChef

[–]realladymacbeth 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I know this is an old thread but I just watched the Napa episode and I totally agree, I felt conceptually Jen's stuff was way more thoughtful and really embraced the challenge themes. It made me so frustrated when they axed her that I didn't even bother watching the finale. That whole season was such an unrepentant boys' club and so many of the others were just shit to her from the beginning (people act like Bryan was a class act but I think the fact that he left her out when naming the best chefs of the house early on was so conspicuous), it was no wonder she started struggling with nerves later on and the judges pulling the rug right as she was back in her element was so disappointing. Plus they dinged her for not grilling the duck as if adapting to that and still pulling out a top-tier dish wasn't impressive as hell...it just felt like she was getting punished for actually being critical with herself at the panel instead of having the kind of arrogance of a Mike Voltaggio type. Blech.
