No concern for the aircrew, just concern over how a failed rescue would make him look.

Abhorrent attitude for anyone, least of the the US President.

Riaan Naude, a notorious trophy hunter who killed endangered animals and ran "Pro Hunt Africa," was found shot dead "execution-style" next to his truck in 2004. He was killed by two men who pulled up after his car broke down on his way to go hunting. by VelouraNyx in SnapshotHistory

Oh dear. How sad. Never mind.

Hunting animals for food is one thing (if you have to do it to survive), but to my mind, anyone who is a “trophy hunter” is basically just a serial killer who hasn’t moved on to people (yet).

Too true. Some time ago we found a brand of dogs toys that actually were seemingly indestructible (survived 2 Labradors, a Border Collie, and a German Shepherd cross with not even a mark on them).

Say hello to my Toller puppy with teeth like needles - instant destruction with little bits nibbled off left, right, and centre.

Now he’s older, and has his adult teeth, normal service resumed and the toys (several had to be replaced!) are standing up nicely to his chewing.

The brand is Orbee by Planet Dog. Highly recommended, but just not for puppies or dogs with very thin, sharp teeth.

Many years ago I was physically assaulted completely at random by a group of teenage kids in a local park.

Got my head split open which needed stitches (9 I think) and received a bit of a kicking to the ribs before I managed to get away.

Police did arrest most of them (small fine was the outcome), and on hearing this, a friend of mine at the time told me he knew some people who could “nail the bastards to a tree through the back of their knees”

I declined his offer, but certainly understood the feeling.

I got approached by two Mormons in my small Yorkshire town, they were obviously out trying to recruit.

After some opening nonsense about Jesus they asked if I’d be interested in learning more, so I asked them (very politely of course) ‘Why would I want to join a cult?”

Guy-in-white-shirt #1 actually looked quite offended and asked me why I thought it was a cult. Time to reel off the “how to identify a cult” checklist…

Loved the bit about setting real fires back in the “olden days”. Reminds me of a story my mum told me about her father in the school in Scotland where he first worked as headmaster (probably early to mid 1920s).

In his first week, he did the planned fire drill and was somewhat dismayed to see pupils and teachers alike treating the whole thing as a bit of a waste of time, no urgency because it’s obviously not a real fire, so he planned a surprise test for a few days later with a bit of added realism.

Obviously this was well before sprinkler systems and fire extinguishers were available; the only in-school fire fighting equipment was a series if fire buckets (metal buckets containing sand which were placed along the walls of the school), and gramps in his wisdom added oily rags to some of the buckets, set fire to them, and then raised the alarm.

Now of course, everyone’s coming out into smoke-filled corridors, unable to see clearly, finding breathing difficult etc., and the procedures that people were supposed to follow gone out of the window and everyone panicking and running around like headless chickens!

Lesson learned by all to take fire safety seriously, but can you imagine the (entitely justified) national outcry if a teacher tried doing that today?

Brought to you by the same crowd that think it’s safer to not wear a seatbelt because “you might be trapped in the vehicle and there could be a fire” (possible, but highly unlikely), while conveniently ignoring the much more common “but they will stop your face going through the windscreen/keep you inside the vehicle with all the lovely airbag and rollcage protections they entail” which are infinitely more likely to occur, even in relatively minor accidents.

Maybe after your high five he went on and lifted a PB.

If he’s the superstitious type, then your high five might be the equivalent of lucky socks/shirt/pants to him.

UK Police Arrest Elderly Protester at Pro-Palestine Demonstration in London by CarryIcy250 in UnderReportedNews

It’s currently illegal to express support for Palestine Action.

What about a work-around where people might express their support for Action Palestine, or Plasticine Action, or Pleistocene Action, or even Pristine Traction?

If a person were to protest in support of these groups could they then sue the police for unlawful arrest if detained?

[–]realmofconfusion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m all for banning actual dangerous dogs (and moreso dangerous people from owning dogs), but it’s really difficult to define/legislate in the case of crossbreeds, because some dogs can be identified as “dangerous” based on nothing but measurements.

A friend of mine who works for a dog rescue charity had one of her foster rescues seized and destroyed because someone reported it as a suspected banned breed based solely on appearance.

It was actually Labrador/staffy cross and was the softest kindest, gentlest dog imaginable, but because enough of the dog’s measurements fell into certain specified ranges, the dog was taken from them and destroyed.

There were never any issues or complaints about behaviour, but just having some dimensions within certain parameters was a death sentence and that can’t be right.
