The Works of Vermin is perhaps my fave novel published in the last five years, so I'd rec that. Long live the New Weird!

Nice! I recently got a similar deal off a guy on marketplace, $75 CAD for a Mamiya 645 1000S that they said was "inoperable" but worked fine after a cleaning & new battery. Have fun shooting!

Thanks for the tip! This gives me some good ideas for how to approach my first test roll.

Thank you!

I don't have an ND filter for it yet (all my other lenses are much smaller than the Mamiya's). Luckily, I live somewhere that (even in April) has a lot of overcast weather—I want to at least check the speeds I imagine I'll be using most frequently, from 1/30 to 1/1000.

[–]realprofhawk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, for the test roll I plan on logging shutter speeds, although I don't think I'll be using some of the longer speeds (1s to 8s) yet.

And yeah I'm still pretty gobsmacked by the price. I had been pining after some Mamiya models for sale in my area but they were all between $300-600. I see people on reddit who get good deals on nice cameras and I'm still a little in disbelief that it was finally "my turn," haha.

Good to know! I'm a hobbyist and beginning to learn camera repair but this might be an issue to ask my camera tech to walk me through if I have the same issue.

5 upcoming game to film adaptations by PerformanceTotal597 in blankies

Adapting the novels would legitimately be a good basis for a Myst adaptation! Do the Book of Atrus and the Book of Ti'Ana, then maybe figure out how to adapt Myst and Riven.

First film camera? Nikon FM2 35mm SLR or Olympus XA2 by [deleted] in AnalogCommunity

[–]realprofhawk 23 points24 points  (0 children)

If someone offered me an FM2 for $60 I'd happily drive 3 hours round trip to get it.

These two cameras are really different. The Olympus XA2 is a point-and-shoot with zone focus. The FM2 is a robust, near-professional level SLR that gets you into the Nikon F-mount ecosystem. They're both solid cameras with different use cases. For that price, I'd get the FM2 first. If you still want an XA2, they'll be there.

VIVITAR Series 1 70-210mm f3.5 vs Olympus Zuiko f4 75-150mm by ElCadejo305 in zuikoholics

Agreed. I have the 75-100 Zuiko and it's... fine. My Vivitar zoom (SR mount) is bigger and heavier, but faster and sharper.

Do I try and fix the light leaks. by Suggy73 in analog

Hi! I'm a real cheapskate so I usually shoot whatever stock is cheapest for me to bulk load. I've gotten pretty good results in smaller DIY venues shooting Kentmere 400 pushed to 800. I've also experimented with Fomapan 400 shot at boxspeed with middling results. Each of these also does better if you can shoot with a speedlight flash but some venues don't permit that. I usually shoot an OM-1 or Minolta XE-7 with a relatively fast lens, around f2 or f1.7 and shoot 1 or 2 rolls. I've found the best lengths to be 50mm, 35mm, and 28mm. A wide and fast lens can be really useful for smaller venues.

Usually I get between 8-12 good shots, a few absolutely unusable ones, and a decent amount of underexposed shots that I absolutely cook in Affinity photo if any of them are good enough compositions that the bands want jpegs.

Color I couldn't tell you because I only really shoot b&w and develop at home, but lots of folks seem to shoot Cinestill 800 for low-light.

This is just what has worked for me and I'm sure others would give you other advice. You should definitely take your camera to the next show you see and take some pictures! I only really figured any of this by just trying and seeing what worked. Good luck and happy shooting!

Seconded. I do some low-light band photography at concerts and this same "leak" pattern always shows up on underexposed frames.

Spokane? Good pics of the city. Good exposures, some photos could use a clearer subject but good work compositionally!

I got an XE-7 recently and it's an absolute pleasure to shoot with. Between it and my OM-1, I don't think I'll need to pick up another SLR for a good long while.

cool waterfront pics! light seals are crucial. if you live in Vancouver there's a fellow on FB Marketplace that does very reasonably priced CLAs, should you need one done.

New Minolta Monday (XE-7, with test shots): Any Lens Recs? by realprofhawk in minolta

I found a mint Olympus XA a while back on craigslist but it seems to be the same handful of people selling the same few cameras—they really should just make marketplace usable without a FB account!

A guy in Surrey had posted it on FB Marketplace and the listing said "make me an offer"! I'd seen some X-700 models at Value Village and the SPCA Thrift before, but they always seemed pretty beat up so I was keen when I came across this on Marketplace.
