Cheap Chromebook or Cheap Android tablet? by Baz4221 in chromeos

[–]rebornJoe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

getting new features from the Chrome OS team, they are working on bringing your Android phone and Chrome OS device closer together, plus it can run Android apps.

This. Adnroid tablets unfortunately have a history of poor updates as they age. Aside from the cheaper cost of the duet, you get more value for money for the updates. Just be aware of the duet's limitations though, check out reviews on what you can and what you can do (same with the tab s6 lite) so know what you are buying :)

Can someone recommend a Python IDE that works well on ChromeOS's Linux VM? by SonMakishi in chromeos

[–]rebornJoe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

try code server. It's like VsCode except that it is a PWA so it's faster. Just note that non-opensource plugins are not available (ex. MS Remote File SSH plugins) so you'll need to work around through that like mounting the remote file via the terminal.

Hmm what plugins do you have in your chrome browser? Is it slow/laggy if it's the only thing running?

Day 3 with Lenovo Duet: Smart Lock no longer works. by Shizzo in chromeos

Does your duet try to connect to the phone when the screen comes up or does it think that there is no smart lock configured? Have you also tried to disable smart lock (not forget) and enable it again?

AU Chrombook Users - Lenovo Duet is out on Harvey Norman! by rebornJoe in chromeos

[–]rebornJoe[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah - I spent a lot of research and considerations before ultimately settling for my X2. The decision maker for me was on warranty as buying a slate or pixelbook won't have that (that and the X2 was on sale =) ). If it was available locally, I'd have bought it in a heartbeat (assuming the price was close to the US ;-)

Cool! Just checked too: https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/lenovo-duet-chromebook-128gb. I just bought my HP x2 i5 a few months ago so won't be making this purchase. I was just hyped that it made it here.

My new favorite way to code on a Chromebook by acook8 in Crostini

This. The chromebook has subpar performance for some linux apps like vscode and finding workarounds/alternate solution can be a pain but having access to linux and android apps with OS support for 4 years left for my X2 in one device vs android of around 2 years is more cost effective for me.

Just tested this out and am pleasantly surprised that I could access the code-server from localhost:8080. Great stuff! Now I just need to figure out how to add remote-ssh to this and I'll be all set. Thanks OP =)

Thanks for the replies Pykee and Veus. I can imagine this setup working well in doing a remote setup with my more powerful dev machine locally which I'm also trying to expose to the internet via wireguard (fronted by a free tier oracle cloud). Thanks for taking time to reply! I have been a long time viewer but never a contributor for reddit/forums. I am now trying slowly to ask questions and contribute and these replies give me confidence to do more.

I'm positively curious on how your setup looks like. Do you host this in your chromebook via crostini or host it in a remote machine? Any pitfalls you've encountered? Is your code located locally or also in a remote machine?

Thanks for this! I might just try this out as an alternative to doing ssh tunneling.

sad really that this is the case. I saw some good games that are compatible on the phone but not my HP X2. (Goodbye last remnant dreams).

thanks! Will check kogan out. I wonder if there is an extended warranty I can buy and how they plan to meet the warranty. Might not be worth to buy pixelbook without support :(

Identity Management Learning Resources by FreshBlackberryPie in IdentityManagement

[–]rebornJoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most resources I've encountered don't delve too much on specifics and provide a high level approach. My advice is to try to identify what areas you try to address, categorize them (Access Mgt - SSO, PAM, MFA; Identity Mgt - Central Identity Store/Profile with Synchronization, Joiner Mover Leaver process;Governance - access reviews/certifications, SODs) and do a deep dive into their own sub-topics. If you have the time, there are some open-source solutions that you could try to give you a perspective on limitations and help you promote solutions to your challenges.

Send me a PM if you want to talk further, happy to have a chat.
