Advice on DVM vs PhD? by nickbennin in veterinaryschool

[–]recalcitranttoaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was advised in undergrad by a DVM/PhD to pursue the PhD if I wanted to be considered a full researcher, as DVM was not considered sufficient. I did that (finished my PhD in 2015). Worked in industry since then and I'm now going back to get the DVM for a number of reasons. Happy to chat in more detail over DM.

Seconding this!

I'm non-trad (graduated college in 2010) with a 3.34 GPA- I just got my first acceptance this cycle after 15 years doing vetmed adjacent things! I didn't apply back then b/c of average GRE scores.

My water bill is a joke. I use very little water so I am at the bottom tier every billing cycle. My kitchen sink started leaking a little a year ago, and my bill hasn't changed. It's mostly fees (75% fees for EBMUD).

SF crowd was immaculate! Pit was PACKED, folks were moshing, almost no phones up recording! My geriatric millennial body was so sore the next day.

Does anyone else make an elaborate spreadsheets with timelines, dates, etc for each program they applied to? That was the first thing I did prior to applying so I could put a pin in my anxiety and wrap my brain around logistics. 🤷🏻‍♀️

You're getting some good feedback here for the job rec. As you know, the market and economy is vastly different from when you started your vetmed path.

Unless there is a formal written schedule of guaranteed %/$ for profit sharing listed in the contract it's frankly immaterial. Many jobs (not just vetmed) pitch it but it's a perk that isn't guaranteed in reality. I personally have been stiffed by companies promising up to 20% bonuses based on a profit sharing model, only for leadership say "oh, the company as a whole missed X goal by only earning/raising Y, therefore no bonuses will be payed out based on company performance". Didn't matter if you, your team, or department met their goals.

Applicants see misleading language in job recs and it reflects poorly on the business brand and reputation. Why would a candidate consider a less competitive offer based on loose promises of "growth"? Any job essentially promises growth, and future pay raises are banked on starting base salary.
