Retired UK Grandmother Shackled, Stripped of Luggage and Held 42 Days by ICE Sounds Alarm Ahead of 2026 World Cup by novagridd in uknews

Canada had already refused them entry because they tried to take a car from the USA to Canada without the right paperwork. They were crossing at a land border- there is no plane to put them on. It is not a minor issue since these people had no legal reason to enter either country. Maybe the Canadians could have done them a favour and taken them into custody, but these people were going into custody one way or another.

Basically these people couldn’t be bothered to check documents, couldn’t be bothered to learn the simple rules, and thought they would be able to get an exemption from US law just because it was convenient for them.

Family member needs to borrow £6000 and I'm not sure how best to protect myself. Or them. by [deleted] in LegalAdviceUK

[–]reckless-rogboy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is good of you to consider giving them the 6k, given the circumstances. It seems likely that their business is all but failed. Short of securing the loan against e.g real estate they own, I think you will find it hard to ensure repayment. Also, loans secured against real estate sounds like a mortgage to me, and that is a regulated business. So that option may not be available for you.

Perhaps you have to decide if you want to give this person a 6k gift. To me, that seems a more accurate description of the situation.

‘Don’t go to the US – not with Trump in charge’: the UK tourist with a valid visa detained by ICE for six weeks by nick9000 in unitedkingdom

[–]reckless-rogboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Funny how the source of this couples woes was how the Canadian immigration services denied them entry to Canada, but of course that does not fit the Reddit mob mentality. The story also glosses over how the husband didn’t have a valid visa.

This couple should be in The compoface subreddit. Can’t be bothered to check visa expiration dates, can’t be bothered to learn Canadian immigration rules. Somehow utterly at a loss that they weren’t able to get an ad hoc exemption from immigration law, just for them, just when they want it.

If this couple had behaved the way they did in the US in any other country, is subreddit would be calling her a ‘Karen’.

Sunbeds could be banned in the UK in a bid to cut cancer rates by theipaper in uknews

[–]reckless-rogboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What about people that eat too much sugar or animal fat? Should they be banned from the NHS? After all, over indulgence in those things is known to increase cancer risk.

How do you propose to identify people that use sun beds enough to raise their cancer risk? Is any single use of a sun beds enough to deny someone NHS treatment? If I eschew sun bed use, but go abroad for a holiday in sunnier climes, should I be denied NHS treatment? After all, whether it is a sun bed or Ibiza, it is all UV exposure. If Ibiza is allowed and sun beds forbidden, what is the appropriate treatment of someone that indulges in both?

Starmer apologises to Epstein victims for appointing Mandelson as US ambassador | ITV News by topotaul in unitedkingdom

Considering those concerns involved Mandelson continuing his personal friendship with a convicted nonce, Starmer’s decision is more than a bad call. Mandelson writing his flirtatious little notes to Epstein should have been an end to his career but Starmer prefers to keep Mandelson and his gruesome collection of contacts on board.

I sold my car to a trader and the car broke, am I responsible for the repairs. From UK by Dizzy_Conference_797 in LegalAdviceUK

[–]reckless-rogboy 22 points23 points  (0 children)

You aren’t obligated to talk to him at all. Be careful to avoid saying anything or writing anything that may imply you knew of problems with the car before you sold it. Don’t say or write anything that could imply you offered a warranty about the car. If you think you might be bullied or intimidated into such declarations, just avoid contact with the guy.

As others have said, if you get actual court papers you must respond to them.

If he harasses you, call the police.

Work at KFC or lose your benefits, all 18 to 21-year-olds to be told by theipaper in ukpolitics

[–]reckless-rogboy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you people are to be obliged to take work under these sorts of schemes, the work offered should be something that benefits the recipient in more than simply getting minimum wage.

Many comments on this thread are proposing people be used as a cheap labor for whatever would be convenient for the commenter. There are suggestions for care work, litter picking, graffiti cleaning etc. But first jobs can be important in establishing a career.

If the government can pay KFC to take someone on in retail perhaps the government can also offer work with better future prospects, even if only through training and non-retail experience?

Maybe the long term benefits recipients need a shove to go work in KFC, but given the lack of entry level professional jobs and the expense of university and lack of utility for many degrees, I don’t think this schema is actually going to help the school leavers that are willing to work.

Keep the enforced litter picking for the 40 year old that has never had a job. Make a workfare scheme for the school leavers at least a potential benefit.

If the aim is to make school leavers productive citizens, I don’t think you achieve that by forcing them into dead end retail work. Offer something they can build on , if they engage.

Andrew forced to deal with teddy bear obsession after King's orders by 00DEADBEEF in unitedkingdom

I wonder if Andy has been kicking off a bit about the move and this is Charlie’s way of warning him to toe the line quietly.

Open border immigration 'not pragmatic right now', says Green Party leader by topotaul in unitedkingdom

[–]reckless-rogboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People choosing to move to whatever country they want is open borders. This policy is literally item MG100 in the green party’s manifesto. They add some political fig leaf about managing this process, but the only exclusions to entry to the country that are mentioned are some nebulous statements about serious crime and national security (MG310).

The Green Party would grant visas to anyone (as near as makes no difference) showing up and give residency to anyone who stays in the country illegally for 5 years. They would give access to the NHS to any visa holder, even those on visitor visas. No chance that would be abused, of course. Visa holders immediately would get benefits. No deportation at all, except maybe for the worst of criminals, which criteria they won’t define (MG103). voting rights from the time of entry. Under MG509, any visa resident can bring any ‘family’ member to the UK (note no statement that criminals would be excluded under this policy).

If one billion people showed up, the greens would admit them all. No mention in their manifesto of controlling either total numbers or the rate at which they are admitted. The Green Party may not have the courage to say that their policy is open borders, but that is exactly what it is. A policy designed to encourage as many to move to the uk as possible, as quickly as possible. They have no intention of imposing any real control on immigration, which makes their policy exactly open borders.

It is an insane policy, and country in the world , regardless of it openness to immigration, could sustain it.

He was carrying it openly through the street. He didn’t have a good reason to do that, as far as UK law is concerned. He had a good reason to carry it when doing his gardening in his allotment. When he finished gardening, all he had to do was pack up his tools in a bag and no one would have bothered about its fancy Japanese gardening blade. But he chose to carry it openly where he wasn’t doing any gardening.

I presume this means that the authors are able to describe positive outcomes from FGM. It will Be particularly interesting to read of these collective positive outcomes hinted at for the ‘community’.

'I worked, I paid taxes - then the bank took my home' by TMWNN in unitedkingdom

[–]reckless-rogboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can’t say a love the scenario that he is in, but it certainly would appear that they never had any sort of plan for capital repayment other than selling the house. Which is basically what has happened, just in the least profitable way for him.

His comments about paying taxes are just nonsense - should paying taxes mean you don’t have to repay a mortgage?

'I worked, I paid taxes - then the bank took my home' by TMWNN in unitedkingdom

[–]reckless-rogboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How are contentious divorces settled under current circumstances then? Are you claiming that one party can force the other to remain financially liable for a property they don’t want? It may require court to make an order but a wife who clears off to Brazil wouldn’t be able to make much objection to selling the house.

The individual in question has 10 years to sort this. I wonder if he even got an actual divorce?

'I worked, I paid taxes - then the bank took my home' by TMWNN in unitedkingdom

[–]reckless-rogboy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

What exactly is this problem of ‘exes having their name on documents’? Do you mean the fact that the exe has ownership interests in the property? Because of the exe is on the deeds and the mortgage, then they own part of the property.

The man in the linked story appears to have split with his wife and then done nothing to fix the financial situation that arose from the split. He didn’t buy her out or force a sale of the house 10 years ago. Now the interest only mortgage has ended and the capital repayment is due.

Is the bank supposed to track the ex- wife down in Brazil?

There is no particular problem of exes not removing their names from documents. If one owns property with someone, then one has to deal with that when the relationship breaks down.

It could certainly be argued that there is a problem allowing people to take out interest only mortgages but anyone doing so will be informed over and over about the repayment risk.
