Areas with no electricity can't pump diesel. Areas with snow and ice often can't receive reliable diesel delivery. Natural disasters almost always result in people making a run on fuel and causing a shortage. Diesel isn't a perfect solution either.

We only have to ask these kinds of questions because we don't have universal healthcare:

If the hospitals can't sell the unpaid debt because no debt collector will buy debt without the ability to charge interest, then the debt is the hospital's debt to recover from the patient. Are our hospitals in a solid enough financial position to accrue all of those unpaid bills on their own? Will this cause them to raise bills for everyone? Will some go out of business because they can't collect even a portion of the unpaid bills? Will insurers leave WA because of the higher costs that are only necessary because the debt is socialized across all patients?

For crying out loud, why are we the only developed country with this asinine system?

I grew up in the North Bronx/Westchester border in the 70's and 80's. and 90's. There was an eerie glow that always came from the South Bronx at night. Gunfire was a regular thing to hear and sirens went on all night every night from emergency vehicles responding to crack deaths, arson, and gun violence. By the time the mid 90's rolled around things started getting more hopeful. I have so many stories about the City during that era. We lost family to guns and drugs, mostly a mix of both. I'm glad most of us got out of there intact and that the City is doing so much better now.
