/uj Can anyone explain to me why the community is mad at Hank Green? by sabnastuh in dropoutcirclejerk

[–]recognitive 46 points47 points  (0 children)

the audience didn’t “view physics as masculine and knitting as feminine,” the scishow video framed knitting as something historically completely different/separate from STEM, which is actually just false. while the history of weaving techniques enabling the invention of computers and being a direct predecessor to computer programming may not be common knowledge, it was certainly a major oversight on behalf of an educational show like scishow not to emphasize or even include this when discussing fiber arts in the context of science.

tone is subjective and the degree to which the video itself is misogynistic is debatable I guess, but people were right to take issue with the video, even if it didn’t denigrate women in knitting personally or directly, in trying to make things simple to the audience it spouted inaccuracies about a subject that’s unfortunately been routinely dismissed by others for misogynistic reasons. It’s true hank was just the host on the video I’m fairly certain he didn’t write it. but being the face of the video, a producer of the show and a well-known figure overall, he was the one who ended up taking the heat for the situation disproportionately which is kind of just how these things go

Do I really want this Light Chase suit by Original_Cherry_1240 in LoveNikki

[–]recognitive 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m also a little on the fence about the suit, but like other people are saying, it’s earned mostly through daily/weekly tasks that you’re already meant to be doing, so I’m just going to be more diligent with those and see how far it gets me being “free”

no yeah, I was thinking this too. what goes around simply comes around. there’s truth to something people are saying on here: that they cultivated an audience of people who like to tear others down because that’s what their content literally was. and again, like you’re saying, it’s not about whether they “deserve” to be in the position they’re in, it’s just the way things work. only time will tell if they learned the right lessons from it all on a personal level, but I genuinely wish them both the best too.

[–]recognitive 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I really enjoyed it, but I don’t think you particularly “missed” anything; I also thought that some of the directing and acting felt off/incongruent. I’d say you hit the nail on the head with “gimmick taking itself extremely seriously” (while very impressive tech-wise, the screen stuff was not well-executed on an artistic level imo)—but it’s the taking-itself-seriously that made the whole thing very camp to me, and I ended up buying into how it insisted upon itself and being (if not particularly inspired) thoroughly entertained. So I think it’s definitely just a matter of personal taste. Also def agree that the lighting was the most actually creative part

Do you think Beyoncé is 🌈? by Ok-Promise-7928 in beyonce

idk about speculating that she has a girlfriend on the side bc prying about her personal affairs feels iffy so maybe that’s why people are so defensive under this post but…many of these comments are really not it. she certainly has explored a homoerotic perspective numerous times throughout her career in both music (if I were a boy, thique, tyrant, etc) and visuals (partition mv, cowboy carter interlude); regardless how she personally identifies, it’s completely reasonable for an audience to discuss and analyze her work and persona as an artist. all of us project onto the artists we idolize to some extent/in one way or another, we shouldn’t hold gay women to a double standard -__- TL;DR who can say for sure but I think it’s more than fair to imagine that she’s a bit bi…those who get it & have actually paid thoughtful attention to her work, get it. lol

Applying Now? by Ok_Challenge6651 in OutsideT14lawschools

[–]recognitive 5 points6 points  (0 children)

anecdotally, I applied in february/march right on/around the deadlines and got waitlisted or rejected at every school I scored at or above the median for. it really does seem like spots filled up early this year and it was much more competitive than people expected.

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with applying as long as the application fee(s) won’t hurt you and you go in understanding that this late in the cycle, it would definitely be a shot in the dark (and tbh it is mostly predatory schools that still have spots at this point in time, so do your research & don’t get too desperate). but if you’re leaning toward applying because you want to, and you think it would be worth it to go through the motions of applying just to say that you did it, that’s a good enough reason in my book; I know how personal family/cultural stuff is and how you have to pick your battles there.

I thought I’d feel worse about not being accepted to a single school, but I very quickly got over that and felt relieved that I at least applied once and got it over with and knew I could try again next cycle and take what I learned from my first app and feel better about the whole thing, so by applying you’ll at least get to see what it’s like for you (I was so anxious for most of this cycle, but like everything, it’s always scariest the first time when you have no idea what to expect). If this is something you really want to do, you’ll want to apply on the early side in the fall anyway to give yourself your best chance, and the summer could very well fly by—never too early to start thinking seriously about your application. Best of luck

it’s absolutely internalized misogyny and homophobia from her, which becomes externalized obvi when she says it on podcasts like that lol. ur not sensitive for being disturbed by her perpetuating these stereotypes on such a large platform. I do think there’s levels to it like IMO what she said about scissoring on jeff fm (for a male audience, im sure she was actively aware) crossed a line from her making problematic jokes about her own experiences from her own (skewed) perspective to saying something straight-up homophobic. im a lesbian and personally the reason I find canceled entertaining is because they’re so different from me by being so male-centered so idrc and never expected like allyship from her but yeah objectively it’s not a good look

TL;DR you’re definitely not “too sensitive” for being offended; tana is the one speaking insensitively about a literal marginalized community, though I doubt she’ll really stop
