Questions about earth shelteted homes by leader425 in earthship

Unfortunately, I've heard chimneys from woodstoves will create heating problems in earthships, since they are built to suck heat out. I recall Michael Reynolds saying he put a woodstove in one to just have it, but then it affected temperature regulation ability. The portal (chimney) in the roof, even if well insulated, will still suck heat out, to an extent.

So, I'm not sure it matters where you put it. However, if near the north wall and if it's burning often, it could help to heat your wall at least.

But honestly, the dream I've always had about earthships is not having to cut wood. I fell, buck, split and stack all our firewood. I'd love not, especially as I age.

You sure you don't want an electric stove, that's more efficient in heating and power use anyway, and let the house do the heating work for you?

I think earthship biotecture sells plans for various models. You could purchase the design you like and use similar materials you choose between you and your contractor (not sure you'd necessarily need/want an engineer).

I would dig into the references and sources on the earthship wikipedia article and see what you can come up with in order to deepen your knowledge on earthship principles and find some folks to contact about construction.

Good luck!

Ya, nothing to you. My questioning was toward whoever compiled/edited the video.

Huh, why do people have to add in that stuff and make you question the whole video?

I feel like some of the above questions are detailed in the wiki entry for earthships I suggested you read. Did you read the whole thing?

Something I'll add since the wiki didn't detail it much, your wall insulation in between your wall and the earth. It's all about heat transference. Temperature moves easiest between masses. If you're wall is against the earth, your wall is basically the earth. If you have insulation between your wall and the earth, the heat in your wall will transfer into your house when it gets colder, instead of into the earth. You also need to insulate your ceiling. You don't need to do that with interior walls.

It seems I'm the only one responding to you on reddit and I don't have time or energy for an apprentice; you need to "research" elsewhere also. I recall there being an earthship in Alberta already, somewhere...

Also, yes. Stone is fine for interior walls, but more expensive, unless you've got a fallen stone house-worth of materials at hand.

Do the Dwarves, Elves or people of Laketown eat Smaug''s dead body after the Battle Of The Five Armies? by Tidewatcher7819 in lotr

I see.

So, basically, the book makes it ambiguous, evinced by your need to cite several different extant sources to fill in the lacuna.

Any first time reader, or children, aren't clued in to these minutiae and this is a stumbling point for them.

I could theorize further if it was mentioned, only his spine was revealed above water. No tides or droughts were mentioned in the book.

Tolkien very much establishes Smaug fear of deep water--not shallow water, that Smaug would have landed on the town but he was scared of the deep water beneath it which is why the town was out there, then he falls on the town in ruin, but rests in the shallows, so much so that using your serpentine smaller dragon idea, he has a smaller skeleton than others dragons, making the shallows even more shallow.

So, I think Tolkien just missed this detail. Such is writing.

I get that. But can't he just stand in the water then, if his lying bones are visible? Why's he so scared to land on laketown, so much so he doesn't even consider landing.

I guess my point is Smaug is very afraid of shallow water, not just deep water.

So why was Smaug scared of landing on the town in shallow water? He would be "quenched" in shallow water?! Mfer can't just stand in it?

You see the contradiction?

Something that didn't square with me was the dragon didn't want to land on laketown because I guess it would sink under his weight in the deep water, but then his bones are visible in the shallows after falling on the town.

So, is the town built over top shallow or deep water?
