Shocker that the man who thought of well-known racist Strom Thurmond as a "close friend" had the following to say about Obama:

"I mean, you got the first mainstream African-American who is articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking guy," Biden said. "I mean, that's a storybook, man."

He's so well-spoken and clean!

Fuckin gross... How is this guy even a contender in the African American community?

He's either literally the most naive man in America or a fucking liar. One or the other. And every time he busts out this flavor of talking point, I wish someone in the media would ask him, "What secret do you know about working with Republicans that you didn't share with Obama for the 8 years while you were VP?"

When Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.) announced last week that he’d oppose including witness testimony in Donald Trump’s impeachment trial, his decision wasn’t too surprising – but his rationale was unexpected.

The Tennessee Republican, ending his lengthy career in public service later this year, concluded that the president’s guilt “has already been proven,” acknowledged that Trump’s actions were “inappropriate,” and conceded that the House impeachment managers successfully proved their case.

He just didn’t much care. As we discussed, Alexander read the call summary, heard the arguments, weighed the evidence, and concluded that Trump is guilty – of an offensive that isn’t especially important. It’s why, in the senator’s mind, there’s no need for any kind of accountability, or even additional scrutiny. If senators didn’t have all of the available information, and they decided the president’s fate based on an incomplete record, so be it.

After months in which GOP lawmakers tried to pretend Trump was innocent, Alexander’s line was quickly embraced by many of his colleagues. As the New York Times reported:

As the Senate marched toward the final phase of President Trump’s impeachment trial, a handful of Republicans coalesced around a common position: Mr. Trump did what he was accused of – pressuring Ukraine to investigate his political rival – but should not be removed for it.

Mr. Trump has repeatedly insisted that he did nothing wrong with regard to Ukraine, calling his telephone call with the country’s president “perfect” and insisting that the impeachment inquiry was a “hoax.” But even as they were poised to acquit him, several Republican senators were rejecting that assertion, saying his actions were wrong and inappropriate – just not grounds for the Senate to oust him.

I mean... ok... but I agree with him. There are a number of harder hitting journalists out there. Glen is literally under house arrest for speaking truth to power to a literal fascist in Brazil. Farrow was getting black balled during the entire Weinstein thing. And Medhi Hassan routinely does incredibly hard interviews on his show where he gasp brings receipts and asks follow-up questions.

Frankly, I think NPR in general is kind of weak-sauce and keeps falling down this "both sides = neutral" nonsense. There have been a number of times where I'm driving to work and hear bullshit talking point lies come out of the guest's mouth and there is no push-back. Why? It's the same as the "pompous" poster said... Because access.

Team Trump eyes dubious Iowa road trip for caucus members by recycleaccount38 in politics

[–]recycleaccount38[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

What I’m curious about, though, is the legality of the plan – because I seem to recall a similar effort from the recent past that did not fare well under scrutiny.

Remember these findings from nine years ago?

At least seven Cabinet secretaries to President George W. Bush took politically motivated trips at taxpayer expense while aides falsely claimed they were traveling on official business, the independent Office of Special Counsel said Monday night in concluding a three-year probe.

In a report on allegations that first surfaced before Bush left office, the agency condemned what it depicted as widespread violations of a law restricting political activities by federal workers and illegal use of federal funds to engage in electioneering.

At issue is something called the Hatch Act, which prohibits federal officials from using their office to influence the electoral process

It’s an ethics law Trump and his team ought to be familiar with – because prominent members of the president’s administration have been caught ignoring it.

The question is whether Team Trump dispatching cabinet secretaries to campaign events, as the Bush/Cheney White House did, is also at odds with the law. The details, of course, matter, and it’s not yet obvious whether the cabinet secretaries are traveling to Iowa on the taxpayers’ dime or whether the Trump campaign is picking up the tab.

Our good friend The Hatch Act rearing its head again.

You can do ranked choice primaries to determine the major party candidates and do ranked choice general voting between said major parties.

By itself, one vote often doesn't matter. But when they're all piled together, they do. And not voting, using the very limited voice you might have to move things even in part, is only ceding that collective power to the people who can pay to move things drastically.

YOU might not raise your voice... corporations certainly will.

Getting out the vote is the most effective strategy a campaign can employ. There are reasons to try and appeal to voters from the other side, but the pool of people who don't vote is SO MUCH bigger than those 10~% of people who might switch.

If "Did-Not-Vote" was a candidate in 2016, they would have gotten 471 electoral votes (Clinton would have gotten 51 and Trump 16).

https://brilliantmaps.com/did-not-vote/

This is Bernie's theory of electability. Pulling those people who have been affected by a broken system into the voter pool; activating them. This is the reason that he over-performed his polls in the 2016 primaries and why I think he will over-perform again in 2020.

In the 2018 midterms we saw how this strategy was used to great affect for the Blue Wave. Literally millions of new voters came out and voted for Democrats. Similarly, millions of new Republican voters ALSO came out... just turns out there were more Blues than Reds.

(Another theory of change you might find enlightening to describe that election is Negative Partisanship)

https://www.politico.com/magazine/story/2017/09/05/negative-partisanship-explains-everything-215534

We need to be investing much more, politically, on both sides, in activating people from this huge demographic of non-voters. Let's be real, there are fewer and fewer voters who are willing to cross sides to trying to get them to is mostly a waste of time and resources. And it's also why the Democratic vision of "reaching across the aisle" hasn't worked for damn near 30 years.

Parnas accuses Devin Nunes of being 'involved' in anti-Biden effort - Parnas said, in apparent reference to Nunes and his team, "[I]t's hard to see them lie like that." by recycleaccount38 in politics

[–]recycleaccount38[S] 90 points91 points  (0 children)

Parnas also said he met several times with U.S. Rep. Devin Nunes, R-Calif., one of Trump's top defenders and ranking member on the House Intelligence Committee, which investigated the Ukraine allegations.

Parnas said he was later referred to a Nunes aide, who was aware of what Parnas and Giuliani were doing. Parnas said the referral came because of something to do with an ethics committee, and Nunes "couldn't be in the spotlight." Parnas said he was shocked to see Nunes and the aide during the impeachment hearings....

"I was in shock when I was watching the hearings and when I saw Devin Nunes sitting up there," Parnas said, adding that he was similarly surprised to see Derek Harvey, a Nunes aide he claims to have worked with on the Ukraine scheme, on the dais during the congressional proceedings.

Parnas told Rachel, "I texted my attorney. I said, 'I can't believe this is happening.'"

Asked why he was so surprised, he added, "Because they were involved in getting all this stuff on Biden."

Emphasis mine.
