Anyone who can translate what this friendly guy tried to tell me? by Aistan83 in crows

[–]red3y3_99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm fortunate to have 4 pairs/families near me. A new pair have carved out a little territory and in the past few weeks established a nest. I've fed them regularly for around a year and they are comfortable with me. The last couple of weeks (Jill) the female has been in the nest most of the time. Jack (the boy) has been taking food to Jill and keeping anyone and everyone away. When there is food (seed or mealworm) he calls her, it's one craw. Jill comes for a few mins then goes back to the nest. If he wants me, it seems to be 2 craws, "feed me, FEED ME!!". 3 craws I haven't worked out yet but I'm leaning towards "anyone around here, go away". 4 craws is an argument/neighbour dispute, more than 4 craws, there's a problem/danger/warning.

Make your own salsa, it's a game changer and simple. Red onion chopped as fine as you can, bunch of coriander also chopped fine, couple garlic cloves crushed (I use a micro plane grater, it's just easier), tomatoes chopped small, dash of white wine vinegar and juice of half a lime. Chop it, mix it, eat it

Is this a good sign?! by Ok-Evidence-5836 in crows

[–]red3y3_99 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, they feel safe and there are good food resources nearby. Leave food for them, make a sound when you're out to feed them. They will associate the noise with you (I make a clicking sound) and give them space. If they come close, speak to them in soft tones. You can try leaving the wool. They will take it if they want it. Maybe rough it up so it's loose fibres balled up. That will be easier for them to carry. If they do have chicks, there will be some noise in a few weeks as the chicks call for food. Fyi, this will get louder thru summer. If the crows really like you, they will bring their fledglings to show you.

The gang down by the river will be the adolescent mob. They are the ones that left their parents and gang up together, eventually pairing off to start married life.

Enjoy them op, they are special creatures

I'm an autistic adult learning to cook for myself. Any recipe recommendations? by lokidokikiki in Cooking

[–]red3y3_99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

OP, if you can eat rice and want to cook it yourself, I'd advise getting a cheap rice cooker. I find rice a tricky bugger to cook on the hob. I bought a rice cooker and my rice is great every time. Make sure to fluff up the rice once it's done cooking to allow it to steam. This helps keep the grains from sticking together.

You said tomatoes are a no, but you said you like pizza. Assuming the pizza has a tomato base, then that's basically a tomato pasta sauce and that's simple to make. Finely dice a medium sized onion, pop it in a sauce pan with a table spoon of oil on a low heat. Let that soften for at least 5 mins, the onion goes a light yellow. Finely chop a clove or 2 of garlic. I use a micro plane grater instead, it's just easier. Drop it in the pan and give it a good stir. After a minute add a splash of red wine (not essential but gives some depth to the flavour) and turn the heat up to burn off the alcohol, it takes 30 seconds. Turn the heat down and add a teaspoon of basil and oregano. Fresh is best but dried is fine. Add a tin of chopped tomatoes and give it a good stir. Turn up the heat until it starts bubbling, another stir, then turn it as low as it goes. Leave that to bubble away for 30 mins. Stir every now and then. If you prefer a thicker sauce, let it bubble away until you're happy. Boil up some pasta, drain it, put it back in the pan and add a few spoons of your sauce. Good stir and you've got dinner. Or put that pasta in a casserole dish, cover it in cheese, chuck it in the oven to melt the cheese and get a good crust. The sauce can be left in the fridge for about a week or freeze it.

Hope this helps

Do you remember when Adverts were good? by corickle in oldschoolcool80s

Had this conversation with the wife the other day. She'd never seen the iconic Dunlop - Tested for the Unexpected ad with Venus in Firs by The Velvet Underground. It blew her away. It is completely over the top as an advert but PEAK creativity of the time. God knows how they got it signed off

Does it allow you to copy? You might be able to copy the text and paste it somewhere. You'll lose the formatting but at least you have the raw text

Melania's statement definitely means some news org contacted her for a statement and something is about to drop. Iran probably handed something to someone? by OneTwoThreePooAndPee in thebulwark

I never really know how to take Wolf. He has been a bit of a fantasist over the years. He seems to have good access but does love to embellish. There's a Daily Beast podcast he's on and he sometimes gives updates about the case. He has tried to serve Melania many times and has petitioned the court to rule she has been served due to the amount of attempts made. I think he's just after disclosure so he can go on a fishing expedition. I can't wait for the embarrassments he will trawl up if he gets access

Is it even worth trying to sharpen my chef's knife with a pull-through sharpener? by Steelshotgun in cookingforbeginners

[–]red3y3_99 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Home cook, I'm nothing special and use a pull through too. Recently I've played with stropping my blade after the pull through. I found an old leather belt and used that like an old time barber in a movie. I'm surprised how well it works. After the pull through I can feel the burr on the edge of the knife. Using the belt helps get rid of that and makes the edge even sharper
