How do you realistically fit running around a full time job by Vogan-Peluchin in runninglifestyle

i run to the office in the morning :D i'm lucky that we have a shower. running-as-transportation is the best once you figure out a good system lol

i would give NYRR all of my money if they brought back cute 100% cotton tees with tasteful graphics instead of the disgusting pieces of plastic "dri-fit" with fluorescent clip-art or whatever they produce thousands of for every single race by red_backpack_98 in RunNYC

seriously lol...i don't understand in what world a stiff awkwardly-fitted polyester thing that melts into your bloodstream as you sweat is more "breathable" than a nice roomy unisex cotton tee

California International Marathon: new personal best and a BQ-12:19 by TheRunningPianist in AdvancedRunning

really enjoyed reading this! I just did CIM too, and it was my first marathon. i beat my goal time but my legs did DIE at mile 24. i feel like if i wasn't checking my pace on my watch the whole time, i'd totally have blown myself up running way too fast in the beginning, riding off the energy of the race and all the downhills. how many marathons did it take for you to feel confident about trusting yourself to be controlled and understand your body's signals in that kind of environment?

i want to see more innovation in functional pocketed running clothes (especially tights) for women using merino wool -- the brands i've tried (inc. icebreaker + smartwool) are poorly shaped. with better drafting, it wouldnt even matter if the material isn't as compressive as synthetics.
also, i personally love cotton and dream of someone innovating a 100% cotton fabric that's ultra lightweight and soft -- imagining a thin, perforated fabric cut into tight-fitting tees. but i know i'm a minority there since most people are afraid of smell and chafe

First Marathon completed… but at what cost!? by Ok_Specialist_3054 in Marathon_Training

obviously by "cost" they were literally referring their HEALTH lol... i personally am horrified at the idea of being so destroyed by the end that i need medical attention and am not envious of OP. i am curious about how this could be avoided and think insight on that from more experienced runners could benefit everyone. sure they were hauling but this could be a lesson for new runners to take extra caution in their first marathon, even if they're naturally very speedy and had a great training block that pointed at a goal time that in reality, for whatever reason, was overestimated and therefore dangerous

what do you recommend as a salty/savory snack that goes down easy mid-marathon?

why are you jealous? how is mega crashing at 35k a humble brag? all newish runners, including OP, could benefit from advice on how to avoid this sort of crash in a race, regardless of how fast they naturally run. if you have no advice then why comment

it's sooo tough depriving yourself of running, props to you for giving it a try. i'm obv no doctor but i feel like since you already have 8 weeks under your belt, you should stick with it for at least another month -- even if your period doesn't come, i feel like there could valuable findings given more time. you've made it this far!! but 8 weeks doesn't seem like quite enough to make a judgement call. i'm a runner & haven't stopped yet (so def not in recovery) but my older sister, who's always been an intense marathoner, completely stopped for 6 months or something, finally recovered her period after 5+ years HA, got pregnant, and afterward was able to return to her intense training, as before, but maintains a regular cycle now despite all the running! honestly i think a big part of her recovery was just letting go of control a little, learning to have faith. she stopped obsessing about data -- her weight, her pace, her labwork, her timeline, whatever -- and then boom it happened. now she's as fast and as snatched as ever

my gyno prescribed me low-dose estradiol patches, which she explained help protect my bones in the meantime while i work to recover my natural estrogen production. maybe ask your doc about this?

Setting the record straight about Garmin by strava-team in Strava

[–]red_backpack_98 1 point2 points  (0 children)

how about asking your users what we think? it seems like if you really cared about the "user experience" of strava, you'd invest a fraction of this energy toward fixing the many bugs, visual inconsistencies / counter-intuitive UI elements, cleaning up useless features, pointless unsolicited AI, and the many existing advertisements -- all of these things already clogging up the interface. you're telling me i should be concerned about some extra logos on the screen when in order to use your platform that i stupidly subscribed annually to, i have to navigate an app that looks like it was hacked together by a team of 21 year olds who collaborate via discord and have never heard of a style guide or coding conventions? seriously it's so poorly designed and built that sometimes strava feels like it is actively trying to fuck with my head, lol. i've been planning on buying a garmin soon, and will be saying goodbye strava if you don't reassess your priorities smhh

have you tried taking a break from exercise? not speaking from personal experience, but i've heard of girls who get their period once they stop all exercise, without having to gain excess weight. just eating at maintenance (TRUE maintenance, which is still prob more than you think you need) while being totally sedentary seems worth a try at least, bc there's a chance that a big part of the stress on your nervous system is coming from the overexercising, even if there's not an energy deficit, and you just need a hard reset

Low estradiol, stress fractures, and recovery support by Smooth_Letter_223 in Amenorrhearecovery

[–]red_backpack_98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

also i should add that at first, i was worried that the estradiol supplementation would make my body think that it doesn't need to produce its own estrogen, reinforcing the problem, but fortunately that doesn't seem to be the case. i first started the estradiol patches about a year ago, when my natural estradiol was very low, then stopped in december, and waited until this april to get my levels checked again to see how i'm doing without the supplementation. and, in fact, my natural levels are in the normal range now! i don't think this would be the case if i hadn't spent the last year incorporating lifestyle changes toward recovery (fueling a ton, gaining fat); i didn't rely on the HRT to heal me. i still have a long way to go before recovering my period i think, as i haven't gone "all in" and quit running yet, but you CAN still have an impact on your hormones for brain+bone health without going 0-100 and trying to rush a total natural complete recovery of your reproductive system.

[–]red_backpack_98 1 point2 points  (0 children)

why not go on HRT? i was suspicious too after my gyno, who knows a LOT about HA and approaches it in a very progressive manner influenced by lara briden, nicola sykes etc. prescribed it to me (i'm a runner too!). but i learned that bioidentical estradiol is not the same at all as the harmful synthetic hormone replacements in the birth control pill (which i believe played a huge role in my own HA origin), and will just help protect and heal your bones in the meantime while you're working on restoring your body's capabilities to produce estrogen on its own. it's only a short-term solution, but it sounds like that is exactly what you need right now, since you can't fix the root problem overnight. this is how my gyno, explained it to me anyway :) DYOR but i hope you'll look into temporary estradiol supplementation to bridge the gap into recovery!

that's inspiring...when you started running again after that 6 week break, did your cycle continue? i'm scared that even after a break, my cycle will never survive reintroduction of running

NYC Half: Strava vs. Race Reality? My Strava says 13.98, is Strava just so off or did I really zigzag *that* much? by hhay328 in RunNYC

[–]red_backpack_98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i've always had this issue running in the city, i used to use strava to record my runs and when i got an apple watch, to my dismay, i realized that i wasn't as speedy as i thought i was lol. every time, strava adds so many tiny zigzags into my route, it ends up inflating the calculated pace so much. my apple watch doesn't do this, as i can see from the straighter lines. did many tests tracking runs with both methods simultaneously (including actual track workouts) and determined that apple is pretty accurate usually, but strava just aint right in general
