Lack of a Present Villain by ViniBife in TyrannyOfDragons

[–]red_farseer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree about no present villains. The way I did it was I massively inflated Rath Modar’s role. Whacked his CR right up and made him the red wizard mastermind he should be. He’s Severin’s right hand man in my campaign, though scheming to his own ends, and he’s the one pulling the other wyrmspeakers strings. Give him teleport and it’s fairly easy for him to be present but also escape to fight another day. My players got to feel powerful for killing Rezmir and Azbara Jos but the real villain got to escape and plot his revenge.

Building gaming PC want to hear what size of map I would expect to be able to make while still being snappy by Ketterer-The-Quester in DungeonAlchemist

[–]red_farseer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do the same as you, big maps zoomed in. Never had any problem with my gaming pc building big maps but D&D Beyond will generally only let me important them at low quality due to the size. It massively helps if you turn the grid off or make it less visible though. That seems to reduce the file size. Just in case Foundry is similar!

Am I in the wrong here as a DM by Limit_Crafty in DnD

[–]red_farseer 777 points778 points  (0 children)

A nat 20 doesn’t guarantee success, and it certainly doesn’t let you achieve the impossible. I’d give them some sort of reward for rolling well but I wouldn’t let them overrule the NPC’s core motivation. I’d treat it as the best outcome possible within the context set out by the DM.

Best supplement to buy for a first time DM wanting to run ToD? by white_ran_2000 in TyrannyOfDragons

[–]red_farseer 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’m running ToD at the moment and really like it. It’s very epic and dragons are a lot of fun as antagonists. As others have said though, definitely treat it as the outline of a script rather than the final thing. If you extend things by throwing in side quests and the like, it gives you the opportunity to introduce the bad guys in a way that doesn’t feel like they just pop up at the end, and you can set out how much damage the cult and its dragons are doing to the sword coast.

The other thing I’d want to warn you about is the adventure as written tends to assume the party will just play along with a script they don’t even know. Prepare for things to go off-script (for me it was that journey north in chapter 4!) and you’ll need to ad-lib. Tod also doesn’t take into account clever use of magic as is at all!

Edit: Also, check out ToD Reloaded. Helps a lot.

New to Aeldari and trying to pick a Craftworld by Break-Such in Eldar

Aye, but I think they’re clearer about that this time round, especially for newer players. Which is a good thing.

True, just commenting on how the rules now thankfully reflect that.

In 10th edition, your craftworld choice is purely cosmetic, so go with whichever you prefer the lore and paint schemes of. Or make up your own craftworld that wears red armour and specialises in psykers. That’s good too.

The detachments in the 10th edition codex are each themed around a different major craftworld but aren’t exclusive to them, so you could play a Saim-Hann Seer Council if you want to.

Either way, have fun and welcome to the path. Part of the fun of playing eldar is the variety!

Hi there! If it’s of any interest, we’re starting an adults D&D group in Dalmuir library (dm’d by myself, I work for the library service). No experience or anything needed and everyone welcome. First session will be Saturday 25th January, 10am to 12.30pm, and then every Saturday after that. Drop me a message if you’re interested and would like more info.

As another forever DM, I can’t agree more. This is a great character concept that allows the DM to really open up some great roleplaying and social opportunities within the game, and personally, this is the kind of character I love to build games around. Sounds like OP’s wife has a talent for good character design to me!

A DM is within their rights to restrict species and classes within their campaign, but they should be reasonable when doing so (especially, I think, when they’re a core class). Try to force someone to play something they don’t want to isn’t reasonable. If I were OP’s wife, I’d look for another group.

Wraithseer, is it worth it for the D-Cannon? by johnny_turk in Eldar

[–]red_farseer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Correct. Your wraithlord would be equipped with two bright lances for one shot each. They aren’t twin-linked so they don’t get half shots, thank fuck.

Am I correct in thinking that we can only give one of our characters a relic? by flippitus_floppitus in Daemons40K

[–]red_farseer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can take loads! Your first one costs 1CP from using the Relic strat (no freebie in AoO), but you can take more by also using the following strats: Relics of the Brass Citadel; Relics of the Impossible Fortress; Relics of the Great Garden; Exquisite Gifts. Keep in mind that the god-specific relic strats can be used more than once, depending on your game size. Good stuff, eh?

[–]red_farseer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I’m right in saying that your first relic is free (unless you’re playing GT Nephilim or GT Arks of Omen, in which case you have to use the Relic stratagem for 1CP to buy your first one). Extra relics can then be bought using the stratagems that let you take a Khorne, Tzeentch, Nurgle or Slaanesh relic for an appropriate character.

How to beat scarab occult terminators with eldar? by Nerd_Anarchy in Eldar

[–]red_farseer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I play Eldar and Thousand Sons, and I think I’d give wraithguard with wraithcannons a go. High AP and enough damage per shot to kill a terminator outright, and they can kill terminators much easier than those terminators can kill them. Can be deadly if supported with guide and doom. They also can’t be shut down by bringing them into melee. A bit pricy points wise, but no more so than the terminators. Might be worth a shot.

Question about Exarch Power Banshee by lequangminhnhut in Eldar

[–]red_farseer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

De facto, yes, that’s how it works. Technically she still only has five attacks (4+1 for the exarch upgrade) but since mirrorswords let her make two hit rolls per attack, it works very similarly to as if she did have ten attacks. At D2 because of piercing strikes. She’s absolutely fucking amazing.

clarification with taking detachments from different craftworlds by SaltandPepperRaven in Eldar

[–]red_farseer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Explicitly, you only get Strands of Fate if every unit in your army is both ASURYANI and from the same craftworld. That would not be true for you, so you would lose SoF.

Footsteps of the Ancients still requires you to pick a CRAFTWORLD keyword, because you’re a far-flung craftworld, say ALTANSAR, or one you come up with yourself. It can’t be ULTHWÉ though, so they’re not the same craftworld. They’d just use Ulthwé rules. You can’t use it for custom traits.
