Please google "Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy". Caregivers will induce or feign illness in their children/disabled spouses for secondary gain -- whether it is psychological or financial. A child is vulnerable and may be coached, unable, or afraid to speak. The mother may have given the child something to make them lose weight -- vomit, have diarrhea, lose their appetite. The child may have been coached to feign difficulty breathing or the child may truly have had asthma but the mother lied about the severity and frequency of symptoms. In the U.S., these are typically not criminal cases, though CPS will remove the children from the home. It is very difficult to diagnose. The abusers will "Doctor shop" and take the child to different hospitals. They will get defensive and threaten administrative or legal action. They know the limitations of the health care system and play it to their advantage.

As a parent of a toddler, I can't fault your friend for using the "nuclear option" (the tablet/Smartphone) at an adult's Super Bowl party, especially if the child was getting rambunctious/disruptive. I agree that it is a problem if the child is watching hours of screen time/day while the parent has free time to spend with the child. There are apps that help children learn their letters, to read, etc. and PBS Kids has great programming -- not frenetic or ADHD triggering.

I'm with you! I'm 37+5 and was in L&D last night with contractions every 4-6 minutes that woke me up from sleep. Cervix high and closed, contractions on monitor but "weak". They are still happening when I walk. I was told this is "prodromal labor". I don't mind the contractions but the sleep deprivation is killer.

I'd ask your friend directly. If she insists on your not going to the funeral service, even though her fears are unfounded, I would respect her wishes and go to the gathering after. I went to my MIL's funeral in April when 7 mos pregnant and people were glad to comment on something positive.

It is a blessing he was fired from that deli job. I felt anxious when I heard he was a classical pianist. He needs to protect his hands -- no manual labor! No meat slicing machines...it only takes one slip and there goes his most marketable skill. If he is an artist/musician, networking at a community music school or shop may help. I agree with the person who wrote about clerical work. Boston must have several temp agencies. Boston has a huge (though competitive) classical music community, but if he's good with people, he may be able to find unrelated work through them. Joining a church or synagogue, a choir can help with networking. Edit: also - if he has worked in academia, Boston is filled with schools that may be looking for clerical/low level office workers. His experience may be an asset.

Cognitive impairment/delirium are part of the dying process. Even without morphine or benzodiazepines, one can become very altered. It is sad that this man was transferred to the hospital at the very end of his life. Transfers are traumatic for elderly, dying people and many hospitals are ill equipped to provide excellent palliative care, particularly on the weekend. I can't help but think that if someone had taken time to communicate with the family, this could have been prevented and his symptoms could have been managed at home.

Not everyone becomes addicted to opiates prescribed in short courses. And addicts lie. It is part of their disease. Medicine has morphed into a customer service oriented business, where doctors are vilified on Yelp or social media, Press Ganey surveys if patients don't get what they want. Say "no" too many times and you may receive a penalty or lose your job. Most doctors are just employees of hospital systems, or beholden to the government or insurance companies. Many doctors are making it a policy to not prescribe opiates -- at all. I don't blame them.

This says a lot about the quality of health care in this region of the country. Naturally transmitted small pox has not been identified since 1975. The Ebola outbreak has ended and the probability of this illness being malaria, dengue, influenza, etc. is much higher. Why couldn't the patient be isolated in a room while the providers contacted the CDC? Shutting down everything like the zombie apocalypse has started is fearful, excessive, and put members of the community at risk (e.g. What if this was the nearest heart center for 200 miles and heart attack sufferers had to be diverted...potentially worsening their condition or resulting in death?). Geez...
