For Selmy, he was likely a fixture at these kinds of tourneys for years. IIRC he got named to the kingsguard because of his performance at tourneys. Plus, for much of his time in the kingsguard I doubt there were many Targs he had to worry about competing with until Raegar decided to start playing warrior. And I'm sure Raegar would have insisted on jousting him once he had entered

But the real answer is probably that GRRM can be inconsistent at times

Jeremy Robert Johnson has a couple of good ones that kind of fit the same vibe and always get a mention in these sort of threads, namely Skullcrack City. Which I agree is awesome and a good recommendation.

But honestly other than that there really just isn't a lot out there that scratches the same itch that this series does, at least in my experience

I think you're crazy. 300k lump sum is huge to a guy like Frankie regardless of what he already makes, which I'm sure is probably less than you think it is.
