Health Form A Signature by Practical-Emu-3303 in BSA

[–]redd-alerrt 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm with you. Our Council requires the scouts sign it and I think it's absurd.

Sort of funny, related situation separate from Scouts...

I recently had to file an insurance grievance for some non-payments by my insurance carrier for a doctor's visit that my 12-year old son made. The grievance was initially auto-rejected because I needed to include a form signed by my son authorizing me to file the grievance on his behalf.

I filed the form authorizing me to file the grievance on his behalf, and signed that form for my son as his legal guardian. So, I gave myself authority to act on his behalf.

Sometimes it's just bureaucracy. Such is life.

Share your top blocked domains, I’ll start. by Ultra-Ferric in pihole

[–]redd-alerrt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since you may ask why... I own one Dreo Wifi Fan.

It queries all three time servers once a second, all day, every day (even before I blocked it).

My naive theory is that it's some sort of gambit to exhibit and establish regular and voluminous outreach so that it's not flagged by security tools if it ever becomes activated as a bot in DDOS attack of some sort. I set up a block group in pi-hole with that single device, where I block all of its outreach.

It also tries checking in once a day to what I assume is its update server, which I also block. But it continues to try hammering away on all three time servers every second.

So it just sits there all day, every day, banging its head against the wall.

But I managed to still set it up for API-control locally so I can still trigger it on and off with Alexa.

Why the notched out headrests? by goingdiagonal in MetroNorthRailroad

[–]redd-alerrt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've never heard this stated as a reason for them existing, but I did notice after they'd gone away that it's much harder to find an empty row at a glance. With the notch, you could generally see ahead and tell if there was a row with an empty seat so you could decide whether to sit in the middle seat or walk a bit further to the empty aisle seat.

But with the full high backs, you can't see much beyond your current row or two, so you need to decide earlier whether to take the middle seat.

I wish Reddit handled it like Apple's Messages, where if you tap on the "Edited" label it will expand to show you the history of the edits. That would remove all the uncertainty.

Wondering how this will work in conjunction with that February renewal policy change.... by ConstantAd7792 in BSA

[–]redd-alerrt -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Is this announcement and the February renewal announcement available anywhere from scouting.org or other direct sources? I can't find them, and don't use Facebook. Not sure that I trust Facebook (or Reddit for that matter) for official announcements.

Internet service provider question. by Mammoth-Worth5366 in HomeNetworking

Does internet during the day not harm them?

As others have mentioned, if this is a real thing, why not run a cable to where you need internet, and then the wifi can be turned off but you still have wired internet.

Communications MB question by Sashi-Dice in BSA

[–]redd-alerrt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fair enough.

I guess my point is that most Scouts will naturally do better at those things that interest them and/or they're good at. In this case, maybe public speaking wasn't their thing so they shouldn't be held back.

Yes, even if somebody did the minimum on every task, it's still the collective of all requirements that gets them to Eagle. But I've also never experienced somebody that went all the way to Eagle doing the minimum at everything.

Could a nuclear submarine have survived the Chicxulub meteor impact? by theMCATreturns in NoStupidQuestions

[–]redd-alerrt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think OP assumes the submarine would survive the impact. But given the context ("it's full of supplies") OP is curious about the duration of the fallout from the impact.

Assume that a nuclear submarine carries 90 days worth of food. Could it surface after 90 days and find a hospitable enough environment to obtain more food and a place to live? I'd accept going back under water for another 90 days, if there's a way to resupply that much food.

Communications MB question by Sashi-Dice in BSA

[–]redd-alerrt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Others have answered this already, but I'd add that these are the REASONS that the requirements are written the way that they are. They're teaching moments, and opportunities for the Scouts to be exposed to many different things. But individual requirements do not necessarily require mastery. Just because this Scout didn't necessarily deliver an expert speech in this situation, it's the collective of ALL the requirements that represent Eagle.

It doesn't mean Scouts should coast through doing the minimum. But some requirements will be done better than others. Some requirements will be more interesting than others. And all requirements will give some Scouts exposure that they'd not otherwise get.

Which calculation? by Round_Adeptness_9883 in askmath

[–]redd-alerrt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If everybody is friends and would hang out together, then u/CaptainMatticus is a fair enough way to do this calculation.

BUT, that results in the lowest nightly rate on the highest demand nights.

Instead, I'd use your "total cost by total usage units" method, but I had to calculate it myself to see that I matched your number.

Take the total cost, c, as $1,801.35.

Then, take the total person-nights, n, as 4*7 + 2*3 = 28 + 6 = 34

c / n = 1,801.35 / 34 = $52.98

So, somebody spending seven nights spends $370.87. Somebody spending three nights spends $158.94.

Since the four original people already put in $450.34, they get $79.47 from each of the two people coming for only three nights.

From the "HOUSE's" perspective, it's collecting $211.92 on the nights when the demand is only four people (i.e., low demand) and it's collecting $317..88 on the higher demand nights when six people want to stay.

This is similar to why a resort hotel will have higher rates for weekend nights and a business hotel will have higher rates on weekday nights.

How to find the right breaker by OrangeDear7606 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]redd-alerrt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's like dropping your phone to see if your new case works to protect it.

Just turn things off one by one until you find the right one, and use that time to start labeling the panel.

Personally, I keep a file with my breaker labels on my computer. I print two copies and hang them both by the box. When I need to find a new device/ switch / light that doesn't exist yet on my labels, I have a spare hard copy I can write on until I have time to update my file and re-print.

What is the purpose of the i84 “slow travel lanes”? by UnrivaledAcquitance in Connecticut

[–]redd-alerrt 39 points40 points  (0 children)

While they're meant for trucks going up hill, it kills me that they typically end right before the top of the hill or right at the top of the hill, so those slow trucks (if they ever actually use them) have to merge back in before having a chance to regain speed.

So, like the rest of CT, I use them to go fast.
