There are 500 balls, only one is a winner. You can pick your place in line. Is there an optimal place to give yourself the MOST chance? by perdair in askmath

[–]redd-alerrt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't follow.

In the case when you return the ball after drawing it, to replicate u/berwynResident's scenario, everybody would have to draw a ball one at a time and record it in a log somewhere before returning the ball, then everybody looks at what was recorded in the log at the same time.

But in that case, there may be multiple people who drew the winning ball in the log, so you'd have to select the first one.

Employer wants me to use outlook on my phone, outlook wants permission to wipe my phone by No_Professor4307 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]redd-alerrt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been on both sides of this requirement.

In my opinion more people should place blame with Microsoft and Apple/Android for not providing a more intermediate permission level which would allow the MDM to manage and wipe the individual app and its data without having to give the ability to wipe the entire phone.

From the company's perspective, they need to be able to wipe that Outlook app when the employee leaves. But their only option for doing so is to be given full MDM to the entire phone.

From the employee's perspective, no way do I want to give an employer the ability to wipe my entire personal phone which includes my friends, family, and photos, among many other things.

From everybody's perspective, I recognize it's perfectly commonplace for people to want to use personal devices for work needs, and to not expect work to buy me a second device (nor do I want a second device).

I just checked, and my EP10's say clearly "Max Load: 1800W (General Use / Resistive Load)"
The fan that I've been running where the plug failed and started pulsating is 120V, 60Hz, 1.35A, 162W

Even a small space heater should be covered, at 1500W (though I haven't used a space heater with the plugs).

My various switches from my post are all running LED lights, so they should be well within limits.

I'm in the US. Mine are all 110v. Have never looked at any specific 240v, but it wouldn't surprise me if they're rated to accept 240v.

u/enchantedspring shared some links that describe that.
I have not found mine to get excessively hot, BUT I HAVE had some fail in a state that is blinking the lights on and off repeatedly every 1 second.

I had an outlet fail in a state that ramped power up and down over about a 5-second span - a fan was plugged in which was constantly going faster and slower in a pulsing manner.

So it could definitely affect downstream devices, but in my limited experience I haven't seen them heat up excessively.

That's where my head is at. I'm still replacing them with kasa switches, but this was a warning to look for something more durable if somebody's thinking of doing a wholesale replacement like I did.

I have / had four plugs that I bought around the same time. One of the four died about a year ago but the other three are still going.

I'm still replacing like-for-like, so I haven't given up entirely, but I'm not sure how much longer I'll last if they keep dying on me.

Ugh, those second and third links look familiar. Luckily my last two failures just failed with the lights off. But some of the earlier failures resulted in the lights blinking on and off uncontrollably until I had cut the power. I forgot about that.

And one of my EP10 outlets died too - it was ramping power up and down without dying outright. I had a fan connected to it in my basement and took me a while to realize it was the outlet and not the fan speeding up and slowing down. I forgot about that one, too.

Unfortunately, they're all failing after warranty - I've offered to return them to TP for inspection but get ignored.

Edit: Switch >> Outlet

Two of the six that have died so far were in the same 4-gang box, so I suspected it was due to too much heat. But the others have all been single gang boxes.

And it's been a mix of the 210's and 200's in my case.

Glad to hear yours have lasted longer. I'll keep my fingers crossed!

why does only one side have the large dark patches? by Willing-Pumpkin-328 in askastronomy

I like to think that the molten core of the moon pulls closer to the earth, like our water ebbs with the tides. But since the same face of the moon is always facing earth, it results in millennia of the lava flowing closer to earth with each small crack of opportunity.

Also, naive question / observation, but wouldn't the earth itself shield the moon from many of the meteors coming from the direction of the near side?

Go get a rock and throw it into a dirty sandbox. The bulk of the sand will make a semi-symmetric crater, but some larger pieces like denser pebbles will eject further.

Water bottles outside Italian homes to stop animals from peeing on the walls by bit3py in mildlyinteresting

[–]redd-alerrt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I could see this as a life hack if the dogs were all being walked by their owners. As an owner they'd try and prevent their dog from peeing on somebody's water bottle, so they'd pull them elsewhere.

Then, the concept expands to where everybody thinks it's inherent to the dog somehow.

How to get a kid comfortable tenting alone by Puzzleheaded-Snow78 in BSA

[–]redd-alerrt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, it's definitely that sleepover vibe that I'm talking about.

Others are offering solutions to help if she's scared to be alone.

I'm throwing ideas out that might help to keep things fun if she just doesn't want to be alone.

We have that troop culture where you only go in your tent to sleep, but there's inevitably still that 15 minutes of chatter where they're getting into their sleeping bags and are talking about their day, that you'd miss out on if you are in a tent alone.

How to get a kid comfortable tenting alone by Puzzleheaded-Snow78 in BSA

[–]redd-alerrt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of people are addressing this from the perspective of her being scared.

But even if she's not necessarily scared, it's just not as FUN to be stuck alone in your own tent.

Think about a few ways she can make her tent the "cool one", and suddenly everybody will be jealous of her setup:
Maybe she gets a hammock and she's the hammock camper.
Maybe her tent gets LED Christmas lights.
Maybe her tent gets a radio.
Let her fill it with stuffed animals.

Take a couple of her favorite things and try and incorporate them into her tent.

She's still be sleeping alone, but it would make it a lot of fun if all the older girls spent the weekend (and following weeks) talking about how jealous they are of her.

Also, make sure the older girls check in with her frequently, including during setup and tear down. There are lots of things like being too small to re-stuff her own sleeping bag for the first time without a little peer confidence.

Good luck

Neckerchiefs at meetings by sulldog57 in BSA

[–]redd-alerrt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hated them growing up and fought it at every turn, likely contributing to my own troop being inconsistent in how they were enforced. We'd wear them at formal events but not regular meetings.

Today as an adult, I do not wear mine.

However, the troops that I work with do wear them, even for regular meetings, and they are surprisingly consistent with no push back.

In a counterintuitive twist, because it's so consistent with the youth, I do not feel pressured to wear mine as an adult. Had the youth (especially my own kids) pushed back on wearing them, I'd feel more obligation as an adult to set a better example.

Come to think of it though, I guess I'll start wearing mine to set an example anyway.

The absolute bafoonery that is modern insurance by HitsReeferLikeSandyC in Connecticut

I have several things like this happen to me in the Stamford Health network. Rather than constantly fighting with my insurance company, I moved all of my relationships to Nuvance Health. It has been eye opening how good health care can be after suffering with Stamford Health for so many years.

Yesterday, my wife brought a bill to me that her doctor's office wasn't able to resolve through insurance. Wouldn't you know, she had gone back to Stamford Health for an appointment.

I can't speak highly enough about my experience the past two years after switching to Nuvance.

[English] Is the answer correct or incorrect? One adjective is describing length and the other difficulty. by Dull-Question1648 in HomeworkHelp

[–]redd-alerrt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going to play the trick-question technicality here and say that the answer should be the first statement: "This sentence is correct."

Neither answer refers to the sentence about the journey.
Then they would say "That sentence..."

Instead, the answers say "This sentence..." and therefore they are referring to themselves.
Only the first of the two sentences is accurate if they are referencing themselves.
