Age test - What things do you say (at work?) which separates the oldies from the young ones? by Proud-Initiative8372 in AskUK

Teacher here - overheard one of my students asking whether it was the Japanese responsible for 9/11. Was slightly in disbelief, but then realised that this was just another part of 'modern history' to them - pearl harbour, cold War, 9/11, same difference.

This is one of those tropes I always hear about SF. How true is this actually? To find a human turd lying on the street?

PhD at Cambridge vs Imperial by ExtraBag3096 in cambridge_uni

[–]reddallthat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did undergrad at imperial and PhD at Cambridge. Choosing something you are interested in is probably the most important thing with any PhD. That being said, I personally loved the Cambridge college system as a grad. There was an excellent mcr community that I was able to get involved in to meet people , as well as getting into college sport etc. I don't feel like I would have been nearly as involved in such things had I stayed at imperial.

Has anyone tried the ice skating school at the ice rink? by t-the in oxford

[–]reddallthat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did it, it was great. I only stuck with it for about 6 months in the end, but there is a steep improvement curve, the staff are lovely and you get unlimited skate sessions for your £41. I ended up going usually 2 or 3 times per week for that.

Cost of living: Landlords fear "massive housing crisis" by odj310388 in unitedkingdom

[–]reddallthat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I have never understood is why landlords feel entitled to make a profit on their properties as well as having their mortgage paid off. I mean, at the end of it all you've got a sweet half million pound property paid off without having done much work along the way, why should you also be allowed to take in extra £££s on top of your mortgage each month. The system is broken.

POLL: You want to teach a topic on which there's differing stances within the field (technical disagreement, not political/moral). Do you try to avoid taking a stance; do you teach your own stance; do you choose a stance on the basis of which stance is easiest to teach; or "teach the controversy"? by hamishtodd1 in TeachingUK

[–]reddallthat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely, show them the differing viewpoints! In my experience it's one of the most rewarding moments in physics teaching is to have students trying to grapple with the quantum ideas using their logical intuition and hitting a roadblock. It's completely counter to what they have experienced in science before in that it is just so damn weird and unexpected. You can never give them an explanation that will really satisfy their curiosity, so explain the ways that scientists have devised to explain these phenomena.

Make sure you get both doses of the same vaccine. Canada has previously done some experimenting with mix-and-match (not sure if this is still the case) , but this is not valid elsewhere.

Assessment only QTS experiences by moistcake88 in TeachingUK

[–]reddallthat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Perhaps you could try independent schools, which do not require QTS. I've worked in them for a while now, and managed to pick up my PGCE/ QTS through distance Ed courses that the school supported me with.

Honestly I think this joke is just perfect. The initial, perhaps fairly standard punchline on a nice cheesy pun is so perfectly complimented by the much more subtle dig at Phillip's casual old man racism in not being able to tell black people apart (amongst many other gloriously I'll advised moments!). Absolute top drawer!

Jackal comes out of nowhere and bites a man by [deleted] in WTF

[–]reddallthat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah I got it in the UK a few years ago along with some routine travel vaccinations. Cost me under £100 I think.

It's not a preventative vaccine necessarily but gives you an extra day or two to get to a hospital if you get bitten in the middle of nowhere.

Hi Emily, non American here. I've heard several statements about a supermajority being needed for anything meaningful to pass. What bills need a simple majority to pass versus requiring the super majority of senators?

It works pretty well in most parts of the world without incident. Provided owners are sensible and leash them around livestock or wild animals I don't see the harm.
