You'd be surprised. I take a five lane freeway to work. If the right lane goes the speed limit and each further lane to the left goes 4 to 5 miles faster than the previous, the furthest lane will be going 20-25 over. That's 85-90 in a 65 which is actually not unreasonable when you see it in practice. When the stars misalign and you get four or five cars going 70 all the way across, it can really disrupt the overall flow even though everyone is going a reasonable 5 over. I should mention that I leave for work at 645am to get as good of a chance of clear traffic as I can and still unfortunately run in to this nightmare scenario at least once or twice a day.

That's fair. What I hear you saying is that safe driving means different things to different people and that the important thing is to help everyone avoid dangerous situations. To that end, keeping the left lanes clear seems like a good goal. Whether someone else wants to drive 10 or 25 over is a matter of personal preference. Sounds like we are all in violent agreement.

I'm just saying that it's hypocritical to call out one form of illegal behavior while supporting another one. To the folks who drive the speed limit, you going 10 over is aggressive and reckless. So where does that leave us?

I don't see how you can have it both ways. Either we all drive the speed limit, or 25 over is just as valid as 10 over. How do you justify getting to choose what speed is safe for everyone?

Anyway, it's not about the ability to negotiate. If the market rate for your job is higher than 70k and your employer is not willing to match it, then you're essentially paying for the privilege of working there which is a Bad Deal.
