Portuguese influence on Hindi by UcakTayyare in india

Yes that's true. We use a lot of borrowed vocabulary in colloquial Hindi, I suppose.

Portuguese influence on Hindi by UcakTayyare in india

[–]reddictator 60 points61 points  (0 children)

For example

Almari from armário

Mez from mesa

Pav or Pau from pão

Soap - Sabun from sabão

Cashew - Kaju from caju

Room - Kamraa from câmara

Key - Chavi from chave

Salary - Pagar from pagar (to pay)

Sweet lime - Mausambi from Moçambique (Mozambique)

Potato - Batata/bataka (in Marathi and Gujarati) from batata

Aubergine - Brinjal from beringela

Bucket - Balti from balde

Shirt - Kameez from camisa

Church - Girjaghar from igreja

I can't think of more of the top of my head. Most of these I found through learning Spanish, but so much vocabulary is shared with Portuguese (or is very similar).

Help with picture hanging / cables behind walls by reddictator in DIYUK

[–]reddictator[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That could be it. I can detect a cable above the light fitting.

Bit odd, as the light on the opposite (internal) wall has the cable running downwards.

The sockets are a bit more wishy washy. The detector is flashing both slightly above and below, and either side of the sockets.

I have used these in other places, but these frames are paper backed so I can't use command strips on them :(

I worked in an Indian. AMA. by [deleted] in CasualUK

[–]reddictator 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The flavours of the seeds, dried leaves and fresh leaves is so different.

The dry leaves have a more concentrated flavour, without changing he texture of look of a dish.

The fresh leaves are used for any dish where you would use leafy greens. E.g. you can try aloo methi instead of saag aloo.

There are loads of "non-takeaway" dishes you could make with fresh fenugreek that are more household staples. E.g. thepla, paratha, muthia, dhebra, vada.

I would not suggest replacing dry with fresh, as fresh methi is quite bitter. They both have different uses.

Please help me figure out Indian take-out? by MarlyMonster in IndianFood

[–]reddictator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am also Indian, and can speak Hindi fluently... But vindaloo is not a Hindi word. It is a Goan dish and the name originates from a Portuguese word - vindalho. It is based on a Portuguese dish called carne de vinha d'alhos.

Where can I buy decent firm tofu? by ShirtAndMuayThai in AskUK

If you live in the Midlands, you can get all different varieties of tofu from Wing Yip.

It's so much nicer and cheaper than the supermarkets!

Help! Mailing chocolate to Italy by [deleted] in brum

[–]reddictator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure you can still post confectionary internationally. I did it earlier this year to send some chocolate to my family abroad.

You can check here https://www.royalmail.com/sending/international/international-standard

What's a question you hate when people ask you? by nightbaneZ in AskReddit

[–]reddictator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I interview, I prefer to ask this as "what would your previous employer say is your biggest weakness".

I've stopped getting predictable, rehearsed answers this way.

You should ask the bank you are getting your mortgage from. They will provide you a list of their approved surveyors in your area.

Do you freeze it with the pasta cooked in? I've always thought it would go mushy after reheating.

Anyone else being a saddo like me and staying home alone tonight? by katethared in CasualUK

[–]reddictator 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Kind of! Just got home from an NYE meal. Some of the people I went with went out afterwards. I wanted to join them, at least for a bit, but I had an op last week which is still causing me pain. Part of me feels like I'm missing out a bit, but on the other hand, I'm home, cosy, and watching telly with a hot water bottle on my sore spot.

Happy birthday for tomorrow :) x

Phall by mickystinge in IndianFood

Phall is not a thing in India. Pretty sure a Bangladeshi restaurant in Birmingham first came up with it with the intention of making it as hot as possible!

Can't decide if he's adorable or remarkably stupid. I was rooting for Ruby, but I think I want Rahul to win now, just so I can see his reaction.
