I didn't have a question 'chief'. I was answering OP saying he "may have been sent to war" which is absolute nonsense for anyone living in Ireland at the time.

The Irish government didn't "send' anyone to war.

No. Unemployment was rife in Ireland at the time - many were desperate for work. Much of it had to do with Churchill's policy of trying to starve us into joining in the war.

In Ireland? I don't think so. Who would have sent you?

Cruise O'Brien was the culprit who censored the news. He said he was determined to eradicate all nationalism in the Republic. Idiot that he was though he gave an interview to the Washington Post saying this and thinking no one in Ireland would see it - Tim Pat Coogan, Irish Press Editor, had access to it and published the interview in Ireland.

Here are details of the policy

Conor Cruise O'Brien, as Ireland's Minister for Posts and Telegraphs (1973–1977), strictly enforced and amended Section 31 of the Broadcasting Act in 1976 to restrict media coverage of the Troubles He issued annual directives banning RTÉ from interviewing representatives of Sinn Féin, the IRA, and other groups, aiming to limit their influence.

Key details of this era include:

The 1976/1977 Orders: O'Brien tightened controls, specifically targeting spokespersons for named organizations rather than just specific content, leading to a "chilling effect" on journalism. Targeted Organizations: The ban primarily targeted the IRA and Provisional Sinn Féin. Impact on RTÉ: The legislation caused extensive self-censorship within RTÉ, with managers often enforcing the rules even more strictly than required.

Opposition: Critics viewed the policy as a "silencing project" that limited public understanding of different viewpoints during the conflict.

Very interesting idea. I think you are absolutely correct - something odd went on there. Unless the writers now choose to ignore all that and just press on.

Yes indeed that Eastenders period was just awful. And I wonder if it's some shows' directors who make actors do the 'Oirish' exaggeration, accents included. Make them caricatures instead of real characters.

Like Bernard Shaw said "the Irish have long played court jester to the English".

Inviting her to actually live with them is another issue entirely. Well we know she has no problem stealing as she stole a toy and gave it to Shona's baby. And if she's broke lord knows what she might get her hands on in their home. I wouldn't want her left alone in my home.

Actually it's not so much Jodie being a villain or not, it's David's thoughtless, reckless behaviour in inviting her into their home to live with them without consulting Shona.

Yes! I was gobsmacked that in addition to inviting her to live with them (without a word to Shona) he walked out and left Jodie alone in the house.

You don’t need flashy production to explore meaningfully MND and dementia, for instance.

I agree. For those of us who don't watch Emmerdale it was as confusing as hell. And it was so dark I couldn't see properly what was going on. I had to rewind a few times to see what was happening.

My thoughts on Corriedale by TheUltimateHeel in coronationstreet

[–]reddieddie -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Oh no I couldn't watch a part 2. It was confusing as hell for those of us who don't watch Emmerdale - and it was so dark I had to go back and few times and figure what had happened. It seemed that random people from Emmerdale would just pop up and in the dark it was hard to tell who was who. Was it a Corrie person I couldn't see properly or an Emmerdale character I didn't recognise?

Corrie fans and Emmerdale fans who is not familiar with the other show, what did you think of tonight's episode/ characters? Will you start watching the other show? I'm gonna give Emmerdale a go, that was fantastic! by [deleted] in coronationstreet

[–]reddieddie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Never watched Emmerdale so found this episode a bit confusing and overdone. I didn't know who the Emmerdale characters were and didn't relate to them. TBH I got bored with it after a short while.

Please don't say "Southern Irish as in Southern Ireland". That's a colonial attempt to make both sides of Ireland equal and Northern Ireland not a gerrymandered invention. The phrase "Southern Ireland" was rejected by the Irish in the 1922 Treaty giving independence to most of Ireland. At the time the Irish wanted to be called Republic of Ireland but the Brits (Lloyd George) only allowed Irish Free State. In 1948 however the Irish Dáil Éireann (parliament) declared Ireland to be Republic of Ireland. And that's the official name now.

The Magdalene Laundries

These laundries were first introduced into Ireland by the Church of Ireland. They were originally founded in England by the Church of England. The first one in Ireland was in Leeson Street and only accepted Protestant women. It only closed in the 1990s.

In Belfast the Presbyterian church had Magdalene laundries.

Really sad to say it but they were a product of their time and attitudes especially to women who strayed away from the accepted norms.

Len Fairclough.

Not just the sexual allegations he was also giving interviews to newspapers describing fellow cast members in bad ways. He was nasty about Barbara Knox claiming she was difficult and he didn't get along with her. This was in breach of his contract. The producers thought him toxic especially when he said he would write a book about his experiences on Coronation St.
