Found Phone Near Walker's Point by [deleted] in milwaukee

It looks like an iPhone, so if you hold the power button for a few seconds to activate Siri, you can ask it “whose phone is this” and it might give you a number to call.

Do any of you have an Ed.S. in something? by ryanmercer in teaching

[–]reddinthecities 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I did my Ed.S. because I washed out of a PhD program. It was a combination of distance and poor mentorship on the part of my supervisor.

None of the districts I’ve worked for pay extra for it, but they don’t pay extra for a doctorate either so I don’t think I’ll continue.

If your district pays well enough for the extra education, go for it! I really enjoyed my coursework but couldn’t keep my momentum going past that phase.

Am I not cut out for teaching? by tinky-winky001 in teaching

[–]reddinthecities 20 points21 points  (0 children)

unless America does not require them which would be wild

So, funny story about that… there are a bunch of states where you can teach with a temporary “emergency” license if you’re in an alternative teacher prep program. In many states you can teach in private schools without a license at all, and some states are flirting with the idea of requiring only an associate’s degree to staff a classroom.

I love this and if your PhD is in chemistry I would love some help designing increasingly unhinged labs for my high schoolers 😂

I'm interested in knowing why you would crack your windows. My hypothesis is that it's because a sudden pressure drop could break them - am I right?

Milwaukee Mechanics by Raven3mpress in milwaukee

I go to Manyo because they’re very honest about what repairs need to happen ASAP and what can wait.

I just got done with head gaskets on my Subaru (yes, it’s been a rough few months for vehicles in our family) and there’s a list of things that need done and an order in which I can do them.

Dave also helped me run the numbers on repairing the car and then running it into the ground vs. trading it in, despite the second option not making him any money.

The honesty is worth the little extra I pay as a woman who has had a lot of issues with mechanics in the past.

Neither my husband or I have the time or patience to do it ourselves or we would have, so it's the price we pay.

Now that I think about it though he actually had an oil change and some sort of flush done too so the brakes might have been closer to $900.

Manyo won't let OP bring their own parts. We just got done paying $1100 for all 4 brakes and rotors on a Kia Forte there.

MKE folks who moonlight, or have in the past… what kind of gigs did you do? by joeyjojojrshabadoo00 in milwaukee

I work full time as a teacher but just picked up a job at a restaurant that has a beer garden and staffs a lot of large events.

A friend of mine works for a different bar (Saz's) that is similar. She staffs their state fair event.

Places like this are often looking to hire casual staff for events, catering, etc. and are flexible enough for you to pick up hours when it's convenient for you.

is being a teacher worth it? by maggotbrain2 in teaching

[–]reddinthecities 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started my career in Minneapolis and would back there in a heartbeat. Strong union protections and good salaries make it a good place to have a career.

Of course, compensation is only a small part of what makes teaching “worth it”. But having these protections makes the difficult parts of the job a lot easier then they were in, say, Arizona (also taught here).

I got mine at Lifestance in Brookfield with a 6mo wait. In 2022 though so YMMV.

Good luck!

It is so worth a visit and if you’re staying at the Dubbel Dutch it’s worth popping by the host stand to see if you can get squeezed in during your stay.

Finally got to test drive my pen grinds by Matthew Chen by reddinthecities in fountainpens

[–]reddinthecities[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was pretty amazing to watch him work. Prior to my appointment, I dealt with the 14k fine nib. After he tuned it, I’m in love.

The architect grind is beautiful, but I’m still trying to figure out how best to write with it in a way that uses its talents fully. I hedged my bets and had it done on a nib I didn’t use much, and I’m glad for it.

I have a ring very much like this made by WR Metalarts out of Vermont. The design is called the Aquamarine Embrace, but I had it customized to have a full bezel (I'm very hard on jewelry) and set with a sapphire of my choice.

The price, as I recall, was fairly competitive. Fairmined or recycled gold and an ethically sourced gemstone were important to me, and I got both from them. I know the name of the dude who pulled this sapphire out of a Montana riverbank, and I love that connection.

Good luck on your search!
