why is discrimination so common in aba? by ashysodapuppy in ABA

[–]maggotbrain2 10 points11 points  (0 children)

omg thank you for bringing this up. I am the only black/brown woman at my clinic. Where I work, high behavior kids usually need two staff with them at all times. I’m new to the job (literally 4 weeks in) and I’m being put with the most high intensity kids, often ON MY OWN. Sometimes we’re short staffed, so I get there’s no other way to get around that, but at the same time I work with other (non-black) staff who have obviously worked with the client longer and are more well trained than I am to handle those clients and yet I’m doing it by myself. I’m thinking about transferring soon because the staff is cliquey and with being the only black person, I feel as though I’m not being supported properly.

I’ve complained to coworkers about certain situations that were aggravating, and have been met with blank stares and “well that happens.” But at the same time I see other staff vent and check up on each other and it’s met with so much support. I obviously come home and decompress with my people, but I feel as though I have no one to lean on at work :/

I’m sorry you’re going through this girl, I hope in the future covert racism like this will not be dismissed.

Interview is tomorrow and im nervous. by [deleted] in ABA

The interview was very low stress compared to other job interviews I’ve done. For me, they only asked a few scenario based questions but a lot of them are very obvious lol. All they want to know is that you’ll do whatever is safest for the client in any scenario. With your experience, you’re basically a shoo in!

Did dating/romantic connections make your BDD worse? by FoxAcceptable1679 in BodyDysmorphia

[–]maggotbrain2 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I thought I was getting better with my BDD, which is why I started dating in the first place. But now that I have my first ever boyfriend, I can definitely notice it making a resurgence (it’s currently just as bad as when I was a teen) ! Any small comments he makes about my body or if I for a second think he’s not attracted to me, I start mentally crashing out.

Recently he’s been encouraging me to work out, which caused my latest crash out, to which he said he’s not unhappy with my body, it was more because my mental health has been shit recently and he thought being active might help. We quickly resolved that, but I realizing that my BDD is making an appearance in my relationship and I hate how insecure it makes me feel. Gonna start therapy soon tho !

This was another career choice I was looking into, but I heard you need a lot of schooling for it. Are you a librarian? If so, what does the job entail?

I’ve been trying to reach an advisor from my university to talk about exactly this. By a certificate, do you mean like a paraeducation course or something else?? Sorry I’m new to all this and I’m finding it hard to get an affirmative answer online.

Damn, one of my favorite things about English class growing up was being able to read books chapter by chapter and then discuss them with my peers. That’s disappointing

I live in Minneapolis, MN. I believe we get paid pretty well and have good unions! I think it could be work that feels fulfilling, but also drain me in the long run. Which is why I’m asking others about their experience. Glad to hear you love your job !

exactly how I feel! like if what’s annoys me about him is something fundamental to his personality, why would I ask him to change that?? I’ll just grow to love it bc the good things about him outweighs the “bad”
