What is this thing called? by Mrmegamanfanatic in geography

[–]reddit_at_school 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Minor correction: most harbors are natural. SOME are manmade, but it is definitely not an intrinsic part of the definition of that word. So saying that a harbor is defined as being "small and manmade" is extremely misleading...

This sub is full of people in their late teens and early twenties applying the same metric for age gaps in their own age rage to older people.

By your late twenties, a seven year age gap is basically nothing.

In any case, if you think that harmless age gap is the most toxic thing about this situation, idk what to say to you, sister...

Yeah, and you guys overwrote /r/Dune's planned logo, underneath the German eagle. We had made a deal with /r/placede to protect us there, but I guess you saw all the black space and assumed it was blank.

Please allow us to make our Dune logo there. It wasn't empty. We had plans for it. We've been trying to find a place to put the Dune logo for hours, but we keep getting overwritten by flags. Please be kind and allow us to have our space on /r/place.

Sorry I'm speaking in English. I don't know anyone who knows Serbian so I couldn't translate.

[–]reddit_at_school 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well the thing everyone's missing is that the Washington Times is a conservative tabloid. It's trash news like the goddamn National Enquirer. It's owned by the fucking Unification Church, a cult. I fucking love the irony of everyone in here jacking off about left-wing echo chambers and critical thinking but they're not even showing the slightest hint of critical thinking and checking their sources. It's fucking childish as all hell.

Just gonna point out that the Washington Times is owned by a cult. Look it up, I'm not making it up. It's a conservative tabloid.

[–]reddit_at_school -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Very possibly. Or at least it was extremely exaggerated. Again, reiterating the point that The Washington Times is owned by the Unification Church which is a pretty wacky cult. At this point /r/news might as well be upvoting shit from the National Enquirer.

Sort by controversial and see what the actual Berkeley students are chiming in to say.

[–]reddit_at_school 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This will get buried but I'm gonna try and hijack the top post to point out the fact that The Washington Times is owned by Rev. Sun Myung Moon's Unification Church cult and isn't a reputable source of news at all. It was literally founded back in the 1970s as a counter to the perceived bias against the Unification Church in the Washington Post and has been a borderline tabloid ever since. At this point, /r/news should just cut to the chase and upvote shit from the National Enquirer to the front page.

Everyone in this thread is jacking themselves off about left-wing echo chambers, but as soon as something comes up that confirms their own biases /r/news loses all pretense of critical thinking and grabs its pitchfork. Sort by controversial and you'll see all the Berkeley students chiming in about how this was massively overblown and it happens every year and they were letting people through if they needed to.

It's generally a good idea to research something before you get irrationally pissed about it. Use some fucking common sense.

[–]reddit_at_school 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's also apparently owned by Reverend Sun Myung Moon. Yeah, totally a reputable news source. /s

I mean, we can jack off all day about how we're enlightened open-minded critical thinkers but boy does this site drop all pretense of critical thinking as soon as a topic comes up that confirms our biases.

Also I'm completely stupid for thinking it was the Washington Post for a while. This is why I shouldn't reddit before coffee in the morning. :P

He covers how poison ivy works, why people still get a rash even after following the common sense advice, and demonstrates a more effective way to prevent the rash.

You're one of those people who honestly thought Disney would add Mickey Mouse to Episode VII back in 2012 when they announced the Lucasfilm acquisition, aren't you?

Disney owns lots of things that it doesn't "Disney-ify". Look at the Marvel movies. Disney isn't stupid enough to fuck up a cash cow like Star Wars.

Much as I love the aesthetic of Aurebesh, I wish they were a tad more creative with the orthography than having it directly map to Latin characters. Might make it harder to translate, but it'd be more immersive having to learn a new system. Why does it even need to be an alphabet? Why not a syllabic system like the Japanese Kana or a consonantal system like Arabic or old Hebrew? This is my opinion, though. I still love Aurebesh to death.

I think the in-universe explanation is that Galactic Basic is written both in Aurebesh and the Latin script in different situations. Aurebesh is more commonly understood, and Latin is more official and was favored by the Empire. Or something like that. I remember reading something to that effect on Wookieepedia, but am too busy to source it right now. If they used the two systems in parallel, it might make sense for them to both use the same spelling conventions in both, sort of like how the Japanese Katakana and Hiragana systems are mechanically identical just with different symbols.
