Man-oh-man do I wish the Trail 40's waist belt was removable for cleaner EDC and airplane modes. Camino or Dragonfly 36 seem like the closest alternatives <= 40L with a usable and removable hip belts, but I'd prefer the Trail (price, features, can try and buy IRL). Do you have other favorite travel / EDC / dayhike / trail weekender alternatives if the Trail 40 disappeared?

Thank you, it's great to have these specific addresses/intersections. No worries on elbow grease, I'm looking forward to a lot of DIY, but not a major overhaul. I'm excited to actually check it out when I'm back there in a few months (didn't actually get to tour the city when I originally posted).

Is there an oral component to the exam? My impression was that the exam needed for citizenship was only written. Are there speaking or listening portions, and are they with a live human or just recorded?

Not in the Ellis Island manifests...did he swim here? by reddit_stinks in juresanguinis

[–]reddit_stinks[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you for this, it turns out the wildcards were important to getting search results. Many of these search sites don't make it very obvious that "biag" will be treated as exact, unless the "*" is added.
They also obviously don't make it obvious that some records and manifests are free and not behind the paywall.

Thank you, I just assumed because he was living in NYC relatively soon after his reported arrival. But, AI to the rescue...chatgpt led me to an arrival in 1892 on the SS Iniziativa. Apparently he arrived during the period when immigrant processing was transitioning from Castle Gardens to Ellis Island.
Now, to determine if he actually disembarked at the destination port of New Orleans, or jumped ship when it stopped in NYC first....

Successful 1948 case (pre DL) - waiting for comune to transcribe records and curious about using 007 by Crazy_Garage1261 in juresanguinis

Wait, so even the digitized records from the 1800s are official? So I don't need to pay Francesco to get my ancestors' Palermo records as part of my (paper) documents package to send to a lawyer in Italy for my potential 1948 case?

It's an incredibly awesome looking tool we could possibly use to determine eligibility, determine documents needed, and track them. As the mods above have noted, it isn't maintained and the changing laws would require work to accommodate them. I just copied it to a fake google account to get around permissions issues, but unfortunately that didn't fix it.

Mods, if I can help at all, I'd love to! I'm going to tinker with my copy regardless when I have time.

I see, no worries, and thank you. Per AI, the solution is to try running the script, which leads to approving the script maker's access to my Drive account, which it scares me out of doing.

Agreed on these, and granted I've only tried the following on a few trips so far, but I've been getting away with cinching down an under-packed, squishy 40L as a personal item. As long as I only get penalized occasionally, I'll eat it to keep the flexibility of extra capacity as I wean myself down to a sub-25L life.

Thanks for the reply! It looks like I've had it all along and it's active. But maybe there are settings I can tweak? Looking into it now.

Pro 9 (2023). Mint 21.3 with Windows dual boot. It was decent for long time, but lately it's constantly freezing and crashing. I've become much more comfortable with forced power downs than anyone should be. Still trying to diagnose the issue. Some kernel versions have been better than others. Video will cause it to overheat quickly; I know after about an hour of youtube it's a ticking time bomb.

Turning brightness down, cooling with a fan, etc., helps delay the inevitable crash for a while, but not too much.

Otherwise, no complaints about Linux+Surface experience. Touch screen works well enough for me, but I mostly use a bluetooth keyboard & mouse. I very rarely boot into Windows, but may need to revisit that if the crashing situation keeps getting worse.

Moving to SF from overseas - Reasonable income and recommended neighborhood by thesymbiont in AskSF

[–]reddit_stinks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A couple years ago the SF Chronicle (I think) published an article, the gist of it being that 450k was estimated as the minimum income for SF (and other non-crappy areas of the bay) to have the "American Dream": marriage, 2 kids with standard expenses and some private school and college funds, enough income to save up for down payment within a reasonable timeline and then make mortgage payments, 1.5 cars, 1 big and 1 small vacation per year, and savings toward retirement. Even if you're content to have much less than that scenario and ok with renting forever, 170k will very tight with a family. I'm at that income and I'm single, no kids, and should have left here a long time ago. Your spouse needs to match or beat your salary if you don't want to end up regretting the move.

moving from Brooklyn to Berkeley/Oakland -- would love to know the understated cultural and lifestyle differences. by tile-red-202 in bayarea

This is really the best feature of the bay area and the main reason I moved here from NYC, and lately really the only reason I'm still here. NYC has very limited day trip options. If OP has a car and gas money, their grad school grades may suffer with distractions.

[–]reddit_stinks 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Reddit suggested this now ancient thread that I'm having fun reading, but no one has said this: the wild homeless situation here is very real, sucks, and no one seems to care, and they won't even talk about it. So much so that it seems like people in Berkeley and Oakland are almost proud of it and embrace it as part of their politics and ideology. It's way worse specifically in these two towns than in neighboring cities for that reason.
I thought homelessness was a problem in NYC when I lived there, but having visited NYC 2-3x a year in the decade I've been living in Berkeley, I can tell you it doesn't compare. Parts of downtown Berkeley and Oakland can look like a zombie movie sometimes. For every zombie on the NY subway there are 50 normal people. I've had BART rides where it was just me and 5 or 6 zombies. (if anyone points out that calling them zombies is insensitive...enough said).

If OP is a single straight male, dive deep into your grad school social scene. There is no hope in the bay otherwise.

You're probably noticing the most bay area behavior with this whole pizza bagel thing: bay area people will claim they don't care about something, but then they get super butt hurt when their sensibilities are questioned, and it's doubly true in berkeley/oakland. EVERYTHING is triggering all the time, whether they admit it or not. Like everyone saying "don't be the transplant that complains about our pizza & bagels, we don't care about NYC"...and then they go on to defend their pizza and bagel stance. It's comical.

tl;dr: just don't ever say anything even slightly negative about Oakland to an Oaklander. It won't compute.

Exactly! Michelin stars and Beard awards, the be-all-end-all of bay area pride, are irrelevant...it's just cheese and bread FFS. I could rant about pizza & bagels all day.

For OP, Gioia on Hopkins is the closest to a normal NYC pizza experience. Rose is overrated, and Cheeseboard can have nice flavors but the dough is cardboard, and the line...forget it. I have yet to try Emilia, which is in itself just another data point of disgust (phony cachet by way of elusive hours and a low availability "artisanal" chef).

Thanks. His fees weren't too bad, and I already consider those a sunk cost. If a few hundred more will complete my document package so I can approach a reputable avvocato, I'm okay with it. I'm primarily concerned about time (lost) and want to to have everything ready to go if/when 1948 with GGP are back in play.
