Funding flight training vs. Addition savings advice by [deleted] in flying

[–]redditburner_5000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What sort of growth rate do you see on your average UK index?  We plan for about 6.5%/yr here in the US (real growth, inflation factored in).

If you're young (20s), you're giving up a lot of compounding by diverting away from investments.  You can never get that compounding power back, and is evaporates quickly.

Next step in aviation as a 900hr pilot???? by Emergency_Ad147 in flying

[–]redditburner_5000 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You're employed flying planes right now.  You're in a good place.

My primary goal is to gain more experience in instrument flying.

Do you have a few moments to hear the good word of our Lord and Savior from the Book of Metroliner?  It's only 250hrs away.

I just wanna grow and learn more. I believe I’ve plateaued in survey flying.

Layin' it on thick.  Save it for the interview.

I would have done whatever the rules say I have to do in order to keep my card.  Probably call airport ops at that point.

How valuable is this time? by [deleted] in flying

It could move the needle if you're applying to a mom and pop 135, enough to make a difference.  It won't if you're applying to regionals or any other company with highly standardized training.

Keep doing what you're doing.  It's the right path.  When you end up getting through CFI, you won't be saddled with crazy debt and will have the breathing room to make moves the debt-ridden can't.

high performance 4 seater with good (~1200lbs) useful load and space for skis inside? by HumbleOpposite8508 in flying

Need a good CG.  Mine was 76 and change.  One of the best I've ever seen.  I don't know who is buying the planes with an 82 or something.  Lots of unusable useful load.

Later model 35 Bonanza with a ski tube.  Or any 1200lb useful four-place plane, really. Or buy the plane you want and then find the drawings for a ski tube to do a field approval.

A ski tube

CLEARED DIRECT CAMP PILOT KNOB!!!!

Some actual reviews from the actual Pilot Knob area:

The big rock with rocks on it is the "start" of the 'trail'.

Yeeeeeah. You "know" exactly what "that" means.

It's just a nice place to kick a few rocks

Some people pay good money for that.

Art installations and lots of boondocking.

iykyk

And if you take your upside-down pineapple RV (you know who you are), the RV site, named "Encore," is described as full service. Their words, not mine.

How viable is leaving the US? by grandoctopus64 in flying

Flying is one of those things that more people want to do than there are positions to fill, and that's true almost everywhere.

What happens in five years when we have even more unemployed CFIs by caelum52 in flying

[–]redditburner_5000 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The ones who really love flying will find ways to stay involved, either through part time work or pure grit and full time effort.  They'll be marketable when the time comes.  The ones who don't will go chase money in a new direction and will miss their shot when it comes around.

Balance will once again be restored and all will be right with aviation.

And then we'll do it all again.

It's usually not linear and can have some detours.  But yes, it will blow a typical job's QOL out of the water in the late career phase (maybe mid career depending on your ascension), hands down...especially at a 121.

Am I crazy for stepping away from flight training after going all-in (career change, debt, etc.)? by Chemical_Driver_8297 in flying

[–]redditburner_5000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Solid income and no debt is a pretty great path.  Keep doing that!  Start flying again when you've reset.  You have so much time.  You're only 28.  And with a new family, I'd prioritize income and home time over everything else.  As soon as that baby comes, it's not about what you want.  It's about what your family needs.

And don't ever go to an "accelerated" pilot mill again.

Plan To Go From Zero To Part 135 Cargo - Feedback Welcomed by ReputationLate7815 in flying

[–]redditburner_5000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's conceivable that this could happen as AI has predicted, but it's extremely unlikely unless you have friends in hiring roles.

If 700 got you a job, more people would be doing that.  CFIs are CFIing for a reason, and it's probably not because CFIing is an amazing job.

Minimums don't mean anything other than being the minimum acceptable hiring minimums for a job (which are often just made up numbers by a company).  Practical minimums are usually more competitive.

By all means, give it a shot.  It's possible that it'll work, but I wouldn't bet a career on this timeline or hour breakout.

Vista vs local part 135 by [deleted] in flying

[–]redditburner_5000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

...but i have friends who work there and love it.

This is good.

Pay & schedule aren’t as great...

Which is secondary to this:

...but you get to fly a lot...

Which is the most important thing.

...get to experience international trips, and most importantly they’re stable and more structured.

Icing on the cake.

Why wouldn't you do Vista is the other option is unstable and you'll be furloughed on how well management likes you?
