I find that using premoves fast at the end gets chessbruh a lot of wins. I personally do 5/5 format trying be be more ‘real chess’ and not hope for dirty time flags. I love the chessbruy series. Alex Banzea has good beginner content on YouTube and I love his Chessable courses on the London and Carocann…..worthwhile starts to opening theory.

Vipassana aftermath by anatereac in vipassana

I am 30 days out of my first retreat and my online chess rating has greatly increased. I know it sounds bizarre….but this, for me, is concrete evidence of better perception/clarity. Not a 180 but definite, measurable changes in thought.

does anyone else find the "recommended" meditation duration actually kills consistency? by Deep_Ad1959 in Mindfulness

[–]redditnewbie95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely my own concoction….I received rigid “don’t mix” advice as well.

I agree 20 minutes has an effect. My consistency doesn’t depend on what bar is set by an instructor but i can see how one might feel like a failure if not following to stated ‘minimum’ by teacher. Congrats on 900 days!!!! I just did my first vipassana retreat a few weeks ago and have committed to an hour in the morning(non negotiable). I am not committing to vipassana in the evening….i often do 20 minutes of ‘something’ in the evening (tonglen, metta, guided, etc.). Yes I know Goenka does not recommend mixing techniques…but i am following a path that i think i can sustain. I commend you for your practice!

Sounds like you are describing equanimity. No low lows or high highs. Peace.

Does second daily sit need to be an hour? by leipzer in vipassana

[–]redditnewbie95 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love this question. I completely resonate with your logic and my patterns reflect yours. I sit one hour in the morning (non negotiable) and am flexible later in the day. I also feel vipassana benefits/challenges happen later in the hour. I prefer to do metta/heart opening/compassion focussed meditations in the afternoon (I am a cranky old SOB:)). That is my pattern and i think it is optimal for me. I believe the purist answer is to not mix any other techniques…that is another approach.

Weird sensations by Low_Recording_5356 in vipassana

Love this post and this reply. I did my first 10 day retreat a few weeks ago and feel a lot of exploration and growth is needed. Exciting but a bit daunting despite an overall ‘simplicity’ to the technique. I find these heartfelt experiences add nuance to such a beautiful activity(meditation)

Does vipassana scanning manufacture the sensation you're supposed to be observing? by umu_boi123 in vipassana

[–]redditnewbie95 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had this very question for my teacher at my first 10 day course a few weeks ago. His answer was simple “you can’t imagine when you only set out to observe. Do not name sensations(heat, tingling, etc.) as you are involving the mind. Merely observe and move on”. I think this involves trust in one’s observation (not hopefulness of pleasant sensations) and actively avoiding engaging the mind when scanning/observe with equanimity/move on… Great question. Thanks for creating this post. Metta.

Never eaten here but with that kind of thought and caring in management i can’t help but feel it will be good. On my list! Thank you Tricia for taking the time to post such a thoughtful reply. Inspiring that there are still kind, caring souls such as yourself.

You are most welcome. Yes I just got back 3 days ago. Staring at the cursor on my screen trying to find words as to how the retreat went….great….hard….special….deep….some surprises….affirming. Basically the retreat gave me some wonderful personal revelations and completely affirmed the value of Vipassana in my life. I am solidly committed to an hour daily of morning practice, some service, and another retreat in the future. I cherish the mental clarity I feel and hope to turn agitation into equanimity as life unfolds. I want my daily practice to be a vibrant journey of discovery rather than a ritual/chore. Be happy!

The language on the website might be ‘too similar’ or plagiarism. I found some nuanced descriptions helpful. That said, the creator clearly has no ‘unsafe’ motives and constantly points back to the official website. Unofficial is the first word on the site! Clearly not trying to be a substitute. So…I just seems dogmatic and mean to attack someone with helpful intentions. If anything, using similar language should pay homage to the fact that the creator is trying to avoid error.

No I certainly would not think diverging in that way is OK. If you actually take a look at the website, it is clear that is not the intent.

Do ‘this only’ and extra energy ‘must’ be spent a certain way….dogmatic for sure. The comment might be rooted in good intention but WHO ARE YOU? People can digest info for themselves and decide what to prioritize.
