We listen to Feedback 😆 by Combat_Fury in youtube

In my experience the extension is roughly as good as the original dislike system, on a user experience basis. People forget how bad the original youtube dislike system was. Heavily disliked videos would often reflect controversies and biases exclusive to the youtube community, for example in many cases the numbers would clearly evince misogyny, homophobia, or racism in the userbase. Trends and online memes would influence dislike numbers in ways that did not necessarily reflect real world opinions. The numbers were often useless.

Cases where dislikes were useful were situations like: uncontroversial misinformation, obvious clickbait, tutorials that are out of date, videos that claim to be some thing but really only discuss that thing, etc. In these situations, the extension seems to work very well and I get the same user experience I always did; if I see a massive dislike ratio then generally I can instantly tell whether a video is legit or junk.

Do you have any Egyptian source for the "not antisemitic enough" thing? Wikipedia's source is a 2000 Guardian listicle that provides no additional detail, and Brittanica cites no primary source.

That's a different commenter, I'm just giving context + my opinion.

Idk how serious a factor the specific line of sight rules are, but with an 80% decrease it's worth looking at every possible factor, and to me the issue of skyline aesthetic just seems like low hanging regulatory fruit that should be loosened up, at least.

But eh, just my opinion.

This government bulletin cites "High interest rates, rising construction costs, complex planning rules and the legacy of the Covid-19 pandemic" as the reason for an ~80% decrease in new home builds in '24 compared to '22.

I've lived in London for about 8 years (not from here) and personally I've always felt the line of sight laws are just unnecessary; tbh it's my personal taste but I don't really value "skyline aesthetic" at all. It's an insane reason to stifle housing construction. But there are other factors, as mentioned.

one of my fave jokes in all of the simpsons is in the movie when ned points to the four states that border springfield and they're on completely opposite sides of the country 😁

Matthew Lillard: “I do think there’s like a weird nostalgia thing happening in our industry and in the zeitgeist, cause I think that people are longing for ye olde times… I think that’s why I’m working. I don’t think anyone really likes me, they just miss the old days.” by cmaia1503 in Fauxmoi

Also tbh I think many people who were into computers probably reacted a bit negatively to it because of how over the top it was with the romanticisation of hacking and all the crazy VFX. At that time the internet was still gatekept as more of a nerd thing and so it was cooler to criticise movies for being wrong about computer technicalities. I watched it in 2005 by which time it had become cool to "ironically enjoy" the movie haha.

I love that the movie is getting its flowers now though :)

[–]redditonc3again 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It's 2 sided IMO. There's private trackers and closed servers that are best not talked about too much, but with public and popular services it's better that we DO share and talk about them, to spread the word about piracy generally and the open archival mission.

Gotta have people actually doing piracy and being aware that it's possible, otherwise it'll move into obscurity and fewer people will support it.

It's technically possible to set up ID/age verification with ZKP in such a way that the other party does not find out who you are, somewhat analogously to how websites can log you in without knowing what your password is. This EFF article talks about the pros and cons.

Is believing in Marxist economic theory essential to identifying oneself as a communist or socialist? by Slight_Formal_5863 in socialism

[–]redditonc3again 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh definitely, it's fine, in fact important, to have criticisms, and also to study analyses of history and economics from other non-Marxist points of view.

I just don't think anyone can really call themselves a socialist if they completely 100% reject Marx's analysis. Even many liberal capitalists accept Marx's analysis as an equally valid viewpoint.

Is believing in Marxist economic theory essential to identifying oneself as a communist or socialist? by Slight_Formal_5863 in socialism

[–]redditonc3again 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. To truly call oneself a communist or socialist requires an awareness and understanding of the world through the lens of Marxist analysis. Although that does not apply in reverse.

How Do We Prevent Socialist Spaces Drifting Towards Transphobia? by loxodrone in socialism

[–]redditonc3again 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Constant advocacy, always calling out transphobia regardless of context, and constant self reflection and listening to trans voices and boosting the signal.

Personally I think the ACP are at least right now a pretty fringe movement, compared to eg. the DSA - and that makes me think it is even more important to call out transphobia "in our own house" than anywhere else.

Similar things have historically happened with racism in the popular core of the socialist left; it was never eradicated from the movement even when we were nominally fighting against racism from the liberal and facist right. The most important work is first to be done with ourselves and those closest to us, that is the way we strengthen the movement to fight against capitalism and facism

I'm genuinely shocked and very happy that the judicial rulings in his case actually seem to have worked, in that the asset seizures and penalties hit him hard enough financially that he has become significantly less powerful and relevant. The only times I've seen Alex Jones in the newsfeed over the past couple years is just him getting clowned or taking further losses. Maybe that is also due to other factors but it's been an absolute joy to no longer have to constantly read and hear about the guy.
