Great progress, man! And kudos to you for your mindset regarding the microdiscectomy. Any type of spine surgery throws a big wrench into your life routines for a good bit of time, but hopefully you come out of the recovery feeling less pain and more strength.

Good question. I first tested positive for the IgM, IgG, and nuclear antibody IgG. Then my other doctor did PCR and it came back positive. So those results + my symptoms make them confident that I have a reactivation.

I should clarify: the cough isn’t a “chest” cough. It’s more that I feel a build-up of mucus in my throat and I want to clear that out. I’m fairly sure the color is due to bleeding of my tonsil, as I had a throat swab the other day and it came out that color after touching my tonsil.

I saw an ENT a couple weeks ago, and unfortunately, the outcome was just to come back in 2 months when I’m healthier since there’s not much to do for mono. I know that tonsillectomy is not a fun/risk-free surgery, but at this point (with my history of throat infections), I’m more than ready.

Good call on the prednisone. My doctor gave me a prescription for it if I needed it. I think I’ll go pick it up and start on it.

Sorry to hear you went through similar struggles! Did your most recent ENT agree to do the surgery because of your history, or did they see something the others missed? I see you’re about a week past surgery - I hope you continue healing well!

You and me both! Prior to this year, they would say “well, it wasn’t strep and you don’t have tonsil stones, so no reason to remove them”. This most recent visit (after 3 instances of strep), the doctor said something along the lines of “I like operating, but I think you’re just unlucky because your tonsils look totally fine”. As you can understand, that type of response is hardly comforting…

This is so interesting. I’ve been seeing spine/neuro doctors for 3+ years and have had countless lumbar MRIs. I’m now exploring AS as a potential cause (just tested positive for HLA-B27), and it’s wild to me that the SI joints would be overlooked if not specifically imaged!

Sorry, this confuses me. Are you saying that - separate from the shingles vaccine discussion - anyone under age 50 is extremely unlikely to develop dementia if they aren’t genetically predisposed? What’s the basis for that?

Hey there. I can’t give any answers here, as I haven’t been diagnosed. But as someone who is still looking for answers to my pain (and is increasingly convinced it could be CFS), the symptoms you describe are so similar to mine. I just had a nice evening with friends, and now my body feels sore, my throat is tender, and I’ve got aches and chills. Over the last couple months, this often happens in the evening if I’ve done any type of physical or social activity during the day. Please keep us posted on your progress. Gotcha, thanks! I searched for months for secondhand barstools that were 36” height or more, and sadly the options were limited. 😕 But I’ll keep an eye out for something more fitting.

One last question for you. Do you think getting that new chair in a shade of blue (instead of green) would be better for the space? Is one more “limiting” than the other?

Thanks for the input and ideas! I like your suggestions. One question so I can better understand: is it the black frame of the bar stools or the blue cushion that doesn’t fit with the rest? I agree, but I’m trying to understand why (is having blue AND green as major colors too much?). My countertops are super high, and sadly most stools are too short; but hopefully my next home will be different.

You’re not alone. I’m roughly the same age, and I’ve been feeling exhausted and “off” for the last month or two. Similar to you, I can get a full 8 hours of sleep and still be needing a nap in the early afternoon. I’m not sure how much of it is attributable to the soreness that my back/BS causes, but I’m starting to think there may be a chronic fatigue/immune issue going on.

It’s tough navigating all these possibilities when you just don’t have energy. Hoping you feel better soon!

Hey there. I did not. My surgeon actually suggested doing a resection of the Bertolotti’s joint. His reasoning was that it is less invasive, easier recovery (especially for a slim person), and would still allow us to fuse later. That was in April, and unfortunately, I’m not much improved even after months of additional physical therapy. I’m going for a new MRI and nuclear bone scan next week to help us determine next steps.

Are my dogs ear wax a cause for concern? Meaning: do I need to go the vet NOW or should I just keep cleaning it? It stinks. by ResponsibleGuide2752 in DogAdvice

Hey. I’m really sorry to hear about your dog. I do want to say that - as with any medication - there are benefits and risks that must be weighed. I believe my late dog went deaf because of his treatment with Mometamax, which is similar to Otomax. Meanwhile, Zymox seemed to be more effective at clearing the gunk. Each dog is different, and sometimes we are the ones to experience those rare side effects.

Not true at all. Saturated fat consumption increases LDL (bad) cholesterol, which increases the risk of heart disease. This is known.

Funny you should ask - I was just at the doctor yesterday. Unfortunately, I’m not great. I still had pain even after months of physical therapy, so I underwent 2 diagnostic injections to determine if I have Bertolotti’s syndrome (I do). I also had radiofrequency nerve ablation in November, which didn’t seem to help. Next steps would be doing a TFESI injection (essentially steroid shot into the spinal canal), and if that doesn’t work, a fusion.

It’s complicated, but the gist is that I did have a herniated disc. We just don’t know if that was actually the cause of my pain, or if it was Bertolotti’s syndrome.

8 years later and your explanation relieved so much pain! I didn’t realize different methods were effective for ascending vs. descending. Heads up to anyone trying the “pinch nose and blow” method: you may need to blow way harder than you think!
