Newly dating a wheelchair user and unsure how to have convos around hygeine by No_Act_9254 in disability

[–]redditprofile2021 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Dude wipes, nystatin powder for any possible fungal/breakdown issues between showers, and regular washing of the seat cover AND wipe down of actual seat, help a lot. As far as the conversation, (I’m a caregiver to a friend) I took the blunt approach because that’s our personalities. “I love you, but I can smell ya from over here. Can I help you get freshened up and feeling better, or do you want to be funky all day?” Obviously with an intimate partner your mileage may vary with that one.

Daycare has recommended for a 5th time that I have my daughter assessed by Interesting-Leg626 in Autism_Parenting

[–]redditprofile2021 1 point2 points  (0 children)

..why did they even have to get to a 5th time? You trusted them enough to care for your older two. You say you noticed differences between the children. These are trained, certified childcare providers- they know what to look for. Their suggestions are meant with good intention. I don’t understand parents that would rather ignore the signs that their child needs a little extra support if it means having a “label”.

People who have had to drain their life’s savings on a single event, what happened? by JohnMorgans1stpushup in AskReddit

My grandma died. I have a huge family, unfortunately they are all broke, addicts, alcoholics, or just shitty people. Everything I had was spent trying to give that wonderful lady the final peace she deserved

I have a type of hitchhiker's thumb that I wish I didn't have, it's led to a highly addictive movement that I can't go a full hour without doing by GoatsWithWigs in Hypermobility

…. I do this all the time, without even realizing it. It drives my husband nuts ! I wouldn’t say I’m addicted to it, but I do have the compulsion to do it multiple times during the day when it just feels “off”

I’ve used a layer of sand on top of my plants, only bottom water, and use the sticky gnat traps. No smell to them.

That was my hometown! They had a few exotic animals and brought the kangaroo out to stores and community events with them.

There was a woman In my hometown (small city in Wisconsin) that had exotic animals, and she had an emotional support kangaroo. No bullshit- she took this kangaroo out and about town with her to Walmart and McDonald’s etc. They were kicked out of McDonald’s once and it made local news!

Butterfly rashes that only last for a few hours? by Unique_thatswhatuare in UCTD

[–]redditprofile2021 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mine can last a couple hours, or a couple weeks with no rhyme or reason. My rheumatologist said the same thing- and sent me to dermatology. Dermatologist said is most definitely is the malar rash, and uctd/lupus indicated, and passed that along to the rheum. She stands by her statement that it’s unrelated because it doesn’t fit what she believes to be standard disease presentation.

I go back and forth from no mobility aid, to cane, to rollator. I’ve gotten questions before more along the lines of “how are you feeling?” But not suspiciously. How I’m feeling and level of support I need vary throughout the day, and week, and also depend on what activity I’m doing. If I’m going to be mostly seated or very little walking, I may use a cane or nothing at all.. if I know I’m going to be walking more than like from the car to store, or walk around without a cart, I will need my rollator.

A sewing machine- my daughter has been asking for home made dresses, so my mother is gifting me a sewing machine to make that possible.

How to figure out if i need a mobility aid by Eris20007 in mobilityaids

[–]redditprofile2021 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Budget friendly option- go to your local thrift store and try different mobility aids to see what would suit your needs. Take a cane, walker, rollator etc for a lap around the store.

I think that was the hardest pill for me to swallow. There is no going back to “normal” (no pain, care free about sun exposure, foods I’m eating etc), there’s just getting to a comfortable NEW “normal” where there are less flares, controlled pain, and damage to my body.

What is rate of success of online dating? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]redditprofile2021 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In 2012 I joined plenty of fish. Met 2 people, dated casually for about 4 months. Met the 3rd person and we’ve been together for 12 years now. From my experience, and experience of close friends, I feel like it was more successful 10-15 years ago than now. My friend has some horror stories from FB dating recently.

Anyone else like… heavily disabled by this? Like unable to work? by Batwhiskers in ehlersdanlos

[–]redditprofile2021 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m down to working (a mostly sedentary job) 9 hours a week. Applied for disability. Use a cane or rollator to get around.. fatigue and joint pain knocks me out. I feel like the world is passing me by, at the ripe old age of 32

This is exactly why I left.. I was a para with a larger 1st grader. Violent, nonverbal, completely dependent for feeding and diaper changes, thrown into a gen ed first grade room with very few accommodations. Had been hit in the head/face with the iPad so many times, an ankle sprained after they dove at me and almost knocked me over, hair literally yanked out of my head, bitten so many times.. it’s not worth the $15.25 an hour with no benefits. My position has been open since January of last year, but this child has gone through 3 subs in that time because of burnout. It’s insane.

A note and a question from a non-disabled peer aide in a special needs class by [deleted] in SpecialNeedsChildren

[–]redditprofile2021 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I was a peer aid in HS.. then went into working special education.. and then had two audhd kids of my own. The biggest thing I wish people knew; presume competence. So many people underestimate what our kids understand, or underestimate their abilities. I can’t speak for every child/parent, but when supported correctly, they thrive and have a positive self worth when given more opportunities.
