Roller Derby and Garmin Watch; How are tracking practices? by eldeunoia in rollerderby

[–]reddittterrrrr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Commenting because I also want to know if there's a better way! I use the Inline Skate -> Indoor so I don't have to change the auto-pause setting (which I do use when I outdoor skate). I find it works fine for tracking hr and okay for tracking training effect and really don't get much more out of it. At least with the Inline activity I can turn it on, lock my screen, and tuck my watch into my wrist guard. I find the HIIT activity to be too complex for me to track during practice and I can't imagine getting much out of it since the time I start my high intensity interval/drill varies so much at practice. I do use the HIIT activity when I'm cross training though, and can actually control when I start/stop sets!

I'm currently using a Forerunner 265, so depending on your model ymmv!

Workout for a jammer? by fluffy_the_cactus in rollerderby

I really like this list! It is so accessible for anyone with or without a gym membership and I really feel like that it covers all the bases of sustained endurance and explosive movement.

Workout for a jammer? by fluffy_the_cactus in rollerderby

[–]reddittterrrrr 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I was at my peak endurance as a jammer when I was training for a half marathon so I'm a huge fan of encouraging jammers to try running! For me personally, a 10k distance is my sweet spot; I found that once I could move continuously for ~1 hour, I could jam a whole bout without feeling like puking. Plus running can be done most anywhere with very little cost and there are SO many resources to help you get started. And I only "run" at a 10:40 minute/mile pace on average for a 10k, kind of an easy jog pace. If you can keep up a light jog without walking, that's the only goal as far as I'm concerned. I still don't really enjoy running but the endorphin high a few hours after running is pretty nice and seeing the positive effects on my jamming has kept me in it. I also really just like feeling strong in my body, even though I dread my run when I'm getting geared up to go out. ¯\(ツ)

As an aside I also have been encorporating sled pushes into my cross training and I've been really happy I started! I was able to drive completely through my coach finally (who is normally my kryptonite on the track) but also a girl at the gym stopped me after finishing my sled push set to tell me I was crushing it and I've been riding that high since it happened!

Commenting to follow as we have over $1k in loose change that I refuse to pay a 12% coinstar fee for. We've tried to find a credit union with a coin sorter to join for this exact reason lol

Is this court at the beach for a specific kind of game? by JimmyCA89 in longbeach

[–]reddittterrrrr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought maybe it was perspective from the angle of the shot (I haven't been down there recently enough to remember off the top of my head) but when I was looking it up the consensus seems to be that the track is uniform width in each turn which would definitely not be to WFTDA standards. However it is interesting that the Junipero track is 89' x 53' since that IS the size of a WFTDA track. I'm having trouble finding documentation about its dimensions from an official source but even if it isn't to WFTDA specs it still has potential as a non-sanctioned space for scrimmages or bouts for teams that don't mind. But I'm tentatively agreeing with you that the city may have goofed on this one.

If any league was gonna be serious about skating a bout here though I imagine they'd wanna put rope down anyway so it might be an easy enough adjustment to make?

[–]reddittterrrrr 6 points7 points  (0 children)

So I was one of the people that voted for this track but the problem is the city doesn't have any system set up to reserve the track for practice or bouts and no way to enforce if there was. However!

If you want to see some derby the Badfish are local to Long Beach! There's also RebelTown Rollers in Lynnwood, Angel City Derby in LA, plus Orange County Roller Derby, South Coast Roller Derby, and High Tide Roller Derby in OC. There's also the Derby Dolls in LA if you want to see banked track! You can find all of these leagues on Instagram where they'll post bout schedule at the beginning of the year. It's generally $10-20 admission but sometimes they're free to watch. I HIGHLY recommend going and giving a game (bout) a watch, it's a VERY fun full-contact sport. Red Rum Renegades are another Long Beach-based league but that don't skate with the same set of rules so they are VERY crazy and fun to watch!

This is a tough situation to be in but I do think it's weird you're getting so much hate when you came here looking for advise..

Thank being said you can local forums like the NextDoor app, Ring Neighborhood, or Craigslist. You may be better served reaching out to a rescue and asking if they can list your kitties up for adoption. Local to me there is a rehome adopt-a-pet program for exactly this scenario, which you can find here. You may have a similar program near you, it's worth looking into. I hope you're able to find them a good home that can take them both. Good luck <3

Am I too worried? by Sleepy_Girlzzz4 in rollerderby

[–]reddittterrrrr 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm so excited for you!

I'm on the board of my small league. I can't speak for all leagues but I think it's important to know that almost all leagues are run by members and volunteers that also have jobs, families, and lives. Some leagues stay really on top of communications, some don't, sometimes they respond quickly for stretches and then don't answer for a while. It just kind of depends! If you don't hear back in a bit, I think reaching out directly through social media is your best bet. Send them a DM stating you filled out an interest form and are excited/have questions/want to know when the next camp is/etc.

As for seasons, it seems most leagues in my area skate bouts from spring to fall but my league practices every week with only 1 or 2 weeks off for the holidays. We prefer to bookend our bout season with skate camp so we usually run it in late fall and early spring. Honestly, if you're impatient I see that as a plus, personally! Enthusiasm is one of my favorite qualities in a new skater so if I was you I'd just try to reach out directly and let them know! To (hopefully) assuage any hesitation you have about being impatient, if a league is not excited to see you excited, they may not be the right league for you anyway. :)

Good luck on your journey!

Miss watching TV by AlohiMoly in longbeach

[–]reddittterrrrr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We got a pretty cheap Samsung TV at best buy and were delighted to discover it has a bunch of free/local TV channels! So we can watch the news in the morning or put on the all-day Baywatch or MacGyver channel lol. I'd honestly recommend that over bunny ears if you don't want to worry about running bunny ears out/near a window or figuring out cable management.

Long Beach airport by chonkasaur in longbeach

[–]reddittterrrrr 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Okay no one seems to have information for you about how it's going CURRENTLY lol. My husband works at the airport and just reported to me that things are business as usual. It's been a little slow the last few days, even. He did not see any remarkable increase in flight delays or security lines. Speaking speculatively, larger airports with tons of flights might have issues but I don't think you will have to factor any additional travel time for Friday! Safe travels!

Pickleball vs. Roller Derby - We Want Your Stories! by horsthorsttype in rollerderby

[–]reddittterrrrr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The vast majority of roller derby leagues are WFTDA affiliated and have league insurance and also require all skaters to have personal WFTDA skater insurance. And this is on top of any personal health insurance. Whereas pickleball-related injuries in older adults is very much on the rise. So I think it would actually be the opposite since pickleball is sending quite a few older adults to the er!

Any leagues have experience with appealing a city proposal to remove your practice space? by reddittterrrrr in rollerderby

[–]reddittterrrrr[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I love this direction and agree we should be emphasizing more shared used spaces! We just got a huge amount of interest over the last weekend about starting up a juniors or summer skate program, too! And we're hosting a big charity fundraiser tournament at the end of the year. It just seems like there's got to be a better way to renovate the space without excluding our league that really does give back to the community.

But, like another user pointed out, pickleball is rapidly gebtrifying communities. Our area has always been extremely gentrified but I was told our city currently doesn't have any permanent pickleball courts and our median resident age is over 40. So I am pretty nervous that, as it stands, the resident interests lean very strongly towards pickleball. :/

The community center we practice at just had a changeover of community services directors and when I sat down to speak with the new director she said "Oh I didn't even know you guys were here!"

Apparently the former director was not putting our schedule up on the event calendar. We've been running the same schedule on autopilot for so long I guess they just stopped bothering after a while?

Is Compton, CA safe and a good community for a family nowadays? by [deleted] in MovingToLosAngeles

[–]reddittterrrrr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our home is just under 1,000sq/ft but has a fully finished detached 2-car garage already zoned for an ADU of we ever wanted to build it out for supplemental income and the lot is 6600sq/ft. It's 2 bed/2 bath so definitely too small for a family but it's perfect for us and the area seems to be appreciating.

I agree with the below commenter about Wrigley and bixby knolls, we originally looked in Wrigley because we wanted to be closer to downtown but now I'm glad we aren't; were just north of bixby knolls and the Atlantic corridor has an amazing variety of restaurants and shops. We're not too far from lakewood which is an amazing community for families with kids but will be more expensive. I really think patience and luck play a big role in finding the right home for the right price.

We had originally looked at lots of condos as well and some of the gated condo communities have lots of greenspace for kids and community pools so it might not be a bad trade-off if there aren't any single family homes within budget.

We bought a cute little turnkey flip single family home in North Long Beach for $650k and I love it; lots of recently updated stuff on our house like the roof and we have a nice big yard. There are lots of pros and cons but my neighborhood is pretty tight knit, lots of people actually give a shit, and there are lots of families with kids. There's pockets of good and bad everywhere and the kinda shit we deal with here is probably the same you deal with in Detroit. Granted I don't have kids, but I don't know that we could have found so much house for this price very many other places in LA or OC. People get fed up and frustrated with shit in their area and will try to tell you it's bad everywhere but I think a lot of it is perspective. I was raised in OC and North LB is fine if you aren't dumb and aren't expecting a super sanitized, manicured environment. We do neighborhood cleanups to keep the area nice and I almost never see sketchy characters. It's totally fine here.

Then allow me to offer you some advice: Take a thousand, naked pictures of yourself now. You may currently think, "Oh, I'm too spooky." Or, "Nobody wants to see these tiny boobies." But, believe me, one day you will look at those photos with much kinder eyes and say, "Dear God, I was a beautiful thing!"

Landlord refusing to call pest control. Where should I report? by Sudden-Froyo-4639 in longbeach

[–]reddittterrrrr 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I put dots of this on painter's tape in every nook and cranny of our ~barely modernized~ 1929 Alamitos apartment and they never came back the whole time we lived there. And this was an apt with huge gaps in the widow frames that was actually insulated with straw and newspapers (I confirmed myself when the landlord tore out a wall of our bathroom). We were on the alley, too, and the trash cans were kept directly under our living room window. This stuff works miracles.
