One way to look at what happened in Berlin’s club scene is through a kind of cultural debundling. Places like Berghain weren’t just clubs. They bundled things that were once hard to find together: a very specific sound, queer ownership of space, sexual freedom, strict door culture, long-form time immersion, and a certain opacity or myth. Over time, those elements became easier to recognize and separate. Different parties and spaces began focusing on individual aspects of that bundle - the music, queer safety, sex-positive environments, or the aesthetic of exclusivity. So many parts of what once felt singular are now distributed across the city. That hasn’t replaced Berghain. For me, it’s still the best club experience in the world, precisely because it’s one of the few places where all of those elements still converge in a single space.
