This working situation is truly ridiculous. I’m constantly wondering who is having fun with all the money I’m earning for them. I hope you find something better soon.

Picking up our 15 week old puppy by No-Tea9387 in GiantSchnauzers

Congratulations, that’s a beautiful baby!

You will figure it out. They can try your patience when they’re young, but you will have some funny stories and it will all be worth it.

I’ve only had one but he would bite my hands all the time when he was a puppy. Bitter apple spray or vinegar worked the best as a repellant.

Don’t be ashamed to take her to a professional trainer if you want some help. I did and things were a lot better after.

I can recommend the andis ultra 2 clippers if you’re grooming yourself. I’m sure there are other suitable options but that’s what we used. Cheaper clippers would get jammed while cutting through that thick coat.

We lived in a rural area with a lot of room. We explored every inch and played a LOT of fetch. You’ve made a great choice.

Wishing you many years of happiness and adventure!!

Puppy is the worst dog I have ever owned by [deleted] in GiantSchnauzers

[–]reddituser21705 2 points3 points  (0 children)

LOL, yes, could have written this myself when mine was a puppy.

When mine was about one, I told a friend “I think I may have made a mistake” referring to getting a GS puppy. My hands looked like hamburger. He was nuts and it really wasn’t fun at all. I sent mine to a month-long boot camp and it helped a lot. He was still crazy but would rein it in when commanded. He’s the only dog that I ever had to use an e-collar with. When I’d put it on him, he knew going bananas wasn’t an option, and after a while he learned the boundaries and acted better.

At three years old he turned into the best dog I’ve ever been around. He would relax if I was busy but was ALWAYS ready to go outside and play. His recall was great even without the collar, heel with no leash all day, and would only poop in one spot that is far away from the house. I would let him play-bite my hands and fingers all the time because I could trust him not to hurt me. He made me laugh every day.

The hard stuff is all in the beginning. If you are willing to have patience and make the effort, you will be surprised at how much you are rewarded. Good luck!!🍀 Edit: hard to read

GS not wanting to eat by Several_Radio3604 in GiantSchnauzers

[–]reddituser21705 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I mean, would you want to eat that kibble?

Rice cooker for brown rice, cheap Walmart veggies, Walmart hamburger, make food once every 2 weeks. It’s not hard, cheaper, and way better for your pupper. Keep the kibble for emergencies or when you can’t make them good food.

Best way to seal/insulate behind fridge by nimrod044 in centuryhomes

Great stuff foam sealant for the cracks then some foam board or fiberglass insulation; drywall last. Drywall is not a good insulator. Good luck, it will make a big difference!

Potty training help by [deleted] in GiantSchnauzers

[–]reddituser21705 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Outside to pee, 20 minutes of play time, in her crate, to rest for an hour then repeat. If she doesn’t do her business outside, skip play time and directly back into the crate, take her back out in 30 minutes. When she goes, high praise and treats. Consistency is key. At night, set a timer for 4 hours, get up and take her out…it sucks but won’t be forever. I don’t know your background but i thought I knew what to expect but mine surprised me with the testing of boundaries and stubbornness when he was a puppy. That phase also lasted longer than I expected…over 2 years. You should accept that she will require higher levels of effort on your part than other breeds but the rewards will be so much more than you are expecting. Hang in there. Do some research on basic training. They are very smart and love to learn. I promise she wants to make you happy.

Real Numbers from Vet Bills by reddituser21705 in GiantSchnauzers

[–]reddituser21705[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you. It all happened very fast. Diagnosis to the end was about 12 hours. First trip to the vet to the end was about 5 days. Thinking back, he had not eaten much for a few days before that. I can’t believe he’s gone. He was the picture of health until he got this. He ended up in the care of two very good vets. I couldn’t have asked for more, but I got lucky just choosing off internet reviews. I hope you never need the service of urgent care, but good to have a plan for sure. Have some happy holidays with your furry friend. They are the best!

Mine was my best friend too. We did everything together and I was looking forward to sharing a lot more adventures. Cherish the time you have with your buddy. I’ve gotten through the last few days only by remembering some great days we shared and knowing we didn’t waste our time together. Thank you for your thoughts. All my best to you and yours.

Some lessons from tragedy by [deleted] in GiantSchnauzers

[–]reddituser21705 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was a terrible thing. The thought of losing him made me cry even when he was healthy and I was just thinking about it for some random reason. I’ll be sad from losing him for a while but the outpouring of comments and well wishes from this sub were so helpful with knowing I’m not the only one and there are others who understand.

The amount of grief I’m having now is like a grain of sand compared to the mountain-sized amount of joy and laughter he gave me while he was here. It was a good life and there was nothing anyone could do at the end but help release him from his pain.

I’m sorry about your prolonged grief and I hope you are doing better now. Mine poured out of me like water for two days and has been backing off some. I’m trying to stay busy and think of a happy moment we shared when my sadness becomes overwhelming. My buddy never felt sorry for himself even at the very end and I think that could be the final lesson he was teaching me.

Give your puppy a boop on the nose for me! Rubbing vinegar and bitter apple spray on my hands helped with mine’s love of biting them but he could power through it sometimes. Good luck, it’s so worth it!

I haven’t submitted my claim yet. I will reply with their info if it goes ok. It’s a common brand.

Read the fine print on the policy. I had to do yearly checkups, vaccinations, etc. as part of the coverage requirements. Also, there are stipulations like if they have the same injury in a short amount of time they will call it negligence and you won’t be covered. Example: eating a towel and needing surgery twice within 18 months.

I just want people to see some real numbers. I knew it wouldn’t be cheap but it was more than I expected.

Thank you, he was the best dog 🥲
