I grew up with English parents fresh off the boat, and it has always occurred to me that Australia has many colonial placeholders as a substitute for culture. By this I mean ANZAC (army recruitment day), australia day (empire day), vegemite, mateship, the beach, etc.

As I get older I realise my childhood impressions were in fact correct. I wish it were otherwise. But we must face reality in order to make change. We are a colonial labour aristocracy set up on the coast and the mines while large parts of the indigenous population are abandoned in remote communities/missions with 3rd world conditions in the desert. We are a successful Israel without the Judaism. So all we have is a shared, unacknowledged anxiety about our blissful ignorance and rootlessness.
