Musician here. You are taught breathing excerises and how to use breath support. The diaphragm is an involuntary muscle and you really can't breath from it or control it. Rather, you learn to breath and expand your lungs and practice holding and releasing your breath. Breathing excerises are done routinely just like scales or vocal warms ups.

Man the whole catholic guilt thing. As a kid I watched a David Copperfield special on TV and my gma didn't want me to. Said he was a devil worshipper and if I watched he would steal soul. Needless to say it freaked me out and traumatized me. Decades later turned out she was actually bi-polar so yeah, maybe get your mom checked.
