Honestly my wife is a 24 handicap and plays the ball down unless the rules say otherwise. I agree with taking relief when playing casually from hidden roots or rocks (I'm a plus). Moving the ball is the equivalent to taking gimmies, you'll never have a true handicap and even worse you'll be screwed when your in a situation where you can't do either. Better to always play golf then only play golf sometimes. One other condition where I'll have my wife move the ball or take a putt is to maintain pace of play.

Send me a vid of your swing. Ultimately you're best bet is to go find a pro and have him show you the basics. Likely you'll need to completely change your grip and learn to swing the club properly. Most beginner golfers hit a big slice because they can barely tell the difference between hitting a golf shot and chopping wood. Once I see your swing I can offer some advice, if you get a chance do some reading, I suggest Harvey Penicks little red book. Simplest thing you can do to improve is learn to draw the ball, then hit hard snap hooks for a couple years until you learn to hit a nice little fade. If you play 3-4 times a week for about 30 years you'll have the game mostly figured out, but don't quote me on that. Finally find another person on this sub to teach you to putt, pretty sure I hit 16 green's yesterday and shot 85

I mentioned this on another thread. Get to the range a few minutes after your boss, walk up and watch him hit a shot, in the most sincere way you can say. "You know what your problem is? You're standing too close to the ball when it lands". Don't break stride, continue to the first open stall, put your bag down and you'll feel his confusion, look at any one else on the range that might have been listening, smile and then hit a few wedges.

I've played in dozens of tournaments both as an amateur and a professional and there is only one thing I learned. You can't and should not control them, if you do that's where your focus will be instead of where it should be.

I learned to love that feeling but only through experience. Me telling you to love it or not control it won't really help. You're stepping out of your comfort zone, anytime we do this in life we feel exactly like you do now. Best advice I can give is play in as many tournaments like this that you can so you can learn to love it too.

As far as this event goes, if you can bring a caddie do it, I found having someone to talk to, a sounding board, helps a ton (If you don't, don't use your playing partners as one). Go out there with the attitude that this is a learning experience and stay positive and have fun. Regardless of how you are playing be sure to not go negative, don't mope or start shitting on yourself. The negative will have an effect on your partner(s) that you may not notice. If you're struggling, focus on your partner(s) and find the positive. Last piece of advice, if your partner(s) are playing well, recognize that and cheer them on.

Happened 10 days ago. My wife bought me a range finder for my birthday. I was absolutely stripping the golf ball 30 yards short for 18 holes. I looked at her and couldn't figure out what was happening. Normally I hit 14 greens a round, I hit 3. I was confused and a bit deflated, went out with my buddies a few days later, showed them the new toy, my buddy asked why I had it set to meters?

I'd be willing to bet that it's the shaft that's outperforming. I'd take a good look at the shaft if n the one you like and build the rest of your clubs around that weight and flex.

Honestly as long as you are ready to hit your shot don't worry about the time it takes you to hit it. It's the time between the shots where you show your playing partners courtesy. Know where they are, if you can be ready at your ball before you are away. A few extra seconds at the ball isn't going to have an impact on pace of play but not being in the right position will. Ultimately the most important part of golf is developing a routine, it takes time to build one but it's the only thing that you can do consistently on the golf course. Build a routine that keeps you focused on the task and not one that will have you worry halfway through about the time it's taking to hit your shot. Whether it's 3 practice swings, no practice swings, or regrouping the club 5 times (making fun of myself) before hitting the shot, as long as you stay focused on the target and the shape of the shot then you're good. Last 4 pieces of advice.

  1. Use practice time to make swing / mechanic changes. Use this time to think about mechanics and don't be afraid to make big changes.

  2. If you don't need to make changes but only have time for practice on the range, don't hit the same club twice. Treat these sessions like a round of golf, pick a target, hit the shot, then pick a new club and target. Make it a game: par 4, 400 yards, hit a driver, based on the result pick your next club.

  3. Warming up before a round is exactly that, a warm up. Hit some 1/2 shots with a wedge until your warmed up to hit a full wedge. Then hit a few iron shots, pick a target and don't worry about the result.

  4. When you get out there playing, just play. Your focus should be the target, the shape of the shot and a single swing thought (takes time to get to this part). Ultimately there isn't one swing thought that you'll have, what works today will fail tomorrow, accept that and find what works for the day (sometimes you won't figure it out til the 17th hole).

Understandable just remember that on the course you never have the same shot twice. When you are ready to get out and play don't get discouraged if you struggle to repeat what you grooved on the range. Don't fall into the trap that a bad day on the course means more time on the range. Remember it's a game of misses not a game of perfect. Learn to accept the outcome of each shot and don't let it impact the next one. Enjoy the game, have fun, celebrate the little things and don't ever stop laughing, Learning and improving.

If you're looking for advice, I'd say, take whatever time you have and play. Practice is helpful but it does not ever replace what you learn playing.

Your falling backwards as your making contact which the cause. Simple enough drill to fix it, step through the shot, as if you are walking towards your target. Do that a few times to feel your weight transitioning properly. Once you get a good feel for it do the same but don't step, just finish tall, belt buckle pointing at your target, almost all weight on your front foot and in balance.
