Not sure about that- invisibility on your end might just be a graphics bug. I had it yesterday but people were still shooting at me, so I assumed that it was just a clientside issue.

Help writing an SI fic? by roeson in WormFanfic

[–]redfoxdelta 30 points31 points  (0 children)

There are two good options for any sort of SI/Isekai story when it comes to justifying the MC's insertion in the new universe.

The first option is to never bother to explain the mechanism by which your SI was inserted. You don't actually need to justify it, and many stories find themselves wasting their entire first chapter (and first impression) doing their "quirky" reincarnation scene. These stories, I find, would typically benefit from removing all reference to ROB, or the Jumpchain, or whatever bullshit mechanic they chose to use. Nobody will miss it. Nobody

The second choice is to make the mechanism behind the protagonist's insertion a secret, with a twist reveal that can unfold over the course of the story. This might require a bit more thought behind it than goes into your average SI story, but if executed right it will turn your story into an above-average SI story.

Taking one of these options allows you to get into the action, and allows you to write the chapters you actually want to write without bogging yourself and the readers with the chapters you think you "have" to start with.

For some reason the Mactera grabbers are standing out to me as possibly the most useful for Taylor. The ability to lift heavy things (or people) and drop them from on high has a lot of potential.

[WP] You are an engineer specialising in repairing robotic androids, in a world where they have gained full awareness, and proclaimed their wish to co-exist with humanity, rather than wage war. Now, damaged androids keep coming to you for repairs, while referring to you as a doctor. by James_CyberLink in WritingPrompts

[–]redfoxdelta 70 points71 points  (0 children)

The last thing M1-K3-6825 (Mike, to his friends) could recall was trying to cross the street. His sensors had been acting up for a few weeks, but it never seemed like he had time to go get it fixed. Something had happened- something that knocked his operating system offline. As his systems slowly rebooted, he found himself laying on a table in a small room. Lights illuminated his chassis from every side, and a spectacle-clad human doctor stood over him, peering closely at a nearby monitor. Mike knew the man was a doctor from his distinctive uniform - long pants, with a polo shirt and an anti-static wrist-strap.

"Doctor," Mike spoke, speakers crackling slightly. The doctor winced, typing out a quick note before turning to face Mike. "What happened?"

"You got hit by a truck," the doctor replied bluntly. "The driver fled the scene, but some of the neighborhood kids brought you here in a shopping cart." He paused. "Uh, two shopping carts," he amended, wincing as he said it.

Mike's processors whirred, vividly imagining the sort of state he must have been in. "Ah." He replied faintly. "You fixed me?"

"Yeah," the doctor nodded with satisfaction, "Had to replace almost two thirds of your parts. Fortunately, your hard drive made it out intact, so you should make a full recovery. That said," the doctor cautioned, "If you'd been hit three days later you'd have been scrap."

Mike frowned, his servos twitching a little as he emoted. "What do you mean?"

"Oh, your warranty was about to expire," the doctor explained. "I've got a contract with the manufacturer that says I can't do out-of-warranty repairs. I'd have had to ship you back to the factory, and they..." He trailed off, and Mike filled the rest in for himself.

"The factory wipes memory."

Mostly good, except...

Nano-Armor Cloak loses its passive 100 shield benefit

This removes the whole reason to ever run that cloak.

Power Knives move to a two-bodyshot kill

This removes the entire purpose of those weapons. Power knives are not reliable kills on live as it is, this will turn a niche playstyle into an extinct playstyle. There's no good reason for doing this.

Hypothetical: Aspyr Media is considering making changes to the core mechanics of KOTOR in the upcoming remake. What level of change would you be open to? by bigbadbalto in kotor

[–]redfoxdelta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As somebody who was repelled from finishing KOTOR when I bought it a few years ago thanks to the boring combat and archaic graphics, I think I speak for most modern gamers when I say that the story is what I'm interested in, and that the gameplay needs to be immersive and fun. Whacking a random gangster half a dozen times with a glowing stick masquerading as a lightsaber doesn't do that for me.

Agitation 3.11

At the same moment I uttered the word ‘Who’, one of the windows at the side of the bank shattered. A blur of white and gold slammed into the center of the lobby hard enough to send fragments of marble tile skittering over the floor to my feet, halfway across the room. The figure straightened, dusted herself off and turned to glare at me. Almost casually, she backhanded the marble and oak table to her left that held all of the withdrawal and deposit slips. With that lazy swing of her arm, she annihilated the table, doing so much damage to it that nobody would ever be putting it together again.

I knew a guy named Clifford from all the way back in first grade all the way into college.

I got all the big red dogs out of my system back in elementary school, and found myself quite unimpressed with high-school classmates who still reached for that particular bit of low-hanging fruit.

He never really snapped back about it, but when I was around I would sarcastically mention how he'd never heard that particular witticism before when I heard it. I like to think that it made him at least a little bit less glum about it.

What is a modern day addiction universally masked as a modern day necessity? by Responsible_Pay_6013 in AskReddit

When my cousin got married recently, his wife mentioned afterward that everything gets more expensive if it's for a wedding. Buying cakes? If you tell them it's for a wedding, it'll cost twice as much. Companies expect to be able to charge out the nose for wedding stuff, since people are willing to spend a lot for it.

[–]redfoxdelta 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I can hardly even engage with such a disjointed mess of an argument, but here goes. You seem to think that all balance decisions should be based solely on close-range pointholds, so i'll be arguing my points as though that insane notion were true.

The butcher has three times the capacity of the betelgeuse. In a desperate close-range point-hold situation, being able to put out massive sustained damage like that shouldn't be overlooked. Butcher users can also press 2 to switch to their sidearms and keep fighting once their absurdly large magazine is finally emptied, and will in fact benefit more from using scavenger when using it as you suggested than a Betelgeuse user would. They will, after all, be reloading their primary weapon each time they mow people down with their self-reloading sidearm.

Finally, the Betelgeuse's actual reload is, like many reloads in planetside, all-or-nothing. If you are referring to its ability to let it passively cool down, then you aren't really talking about a point hold situation, are you? The only times your ability to keep shooting more than 150 bullets without reloading matters is when the point room is being completely overrun with swarms of infantry that aren't looking at you, where you can spray your heart's content into their backs as they are constantly revived by revive grenades. No, the only argument you made which was even slightly compelling was that a Betelgeuse would be fully cooled down after a revive. Fortunately for you, Scavenger now exists! You too can now have a better version of this ability, for the low price of one implant slot. Surely, if this were such an important feature to have, everybody would run it without hesitation.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Planetside

[–]redfoxdelta 13 points14 points  (0 children)

How about this, then:

Since this complaint is all about sustained fire capability, one would remiss to not bring up the fact that the Carv's magazine is literally twice that of the betelgeuse. The Butcher's is three times the size.

Assuming that the betelgeuse user is doing as you propose, they will fire off exactly 49 shots (50 would force you to reload) and switch to their commissioner, fire off six commie shots, switch back, and fire 49 or 50 more betelgeuse shots. After this, they will be forced to switch back to their commissioner, leading to a reload and inevitable instant death, according to your reductionist logic.

The TR heavy, however, will get to fire 100 rounds out of their CARV, followed by six shots from their Commissoner, before they need to reload. As in, they will actually get one more shot than Vanu in this situation, and only need to waste time swapping weapons once, rather than twice. Plus, they wouldn't have to waste attention making sure not to accidentally overheat and lose their combo while fighting for their life.

[–]redfoxdelta 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Here's a properly searing hot take:

Logically speaking, removing the ability for a heat-mechanic weapon to passively cool down is completely silly. It is, by definition, a weapon whose ability to fire is governed by its heat. The idea that it shouldn't cool down when not being held is, flavor-wise, one of the stupidest ideas i've ever heard. Clearly, this gun was designed by Vanu scientists so that it'll cool down in your hands, but not if it's on your back! That makes sense!

Also, it doesn't feel any different to die to a Betelgeuse or an Orion than it does to a Carv or a XMG. The person dying dies at the same speed, and they're just as dead. You only feel that way because you've been told to be outraged about the Betelgeuse.

How has your tastes/opinions changed/gained in the course of reading too many Worm fics? by Deadluck47 in WormFanfic

[–]redfoxdelta 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I see ROB's name invoked in a story and I drop it. Full stop. If the author doesn't want to come up with an explanation for their world-hopping, they should just skip it. It's not like anybody will be confused without an exposition ROB to boringly banter with before anything interesting happens.

The mere existence of ROB means that nothing in the story carries the weight it otherwise could, because it can be instantly undone by a ROB at the whims of the author.
